Is the 2018 Acura TLX reliable?

The owner summary also points to the V6 and stylish design as recurring positives, while the expert notes reinforce that the car is well built and well mannered.

The performance write-up also emphasizes predictable, linear power delivery and a transmission that is eager to downshift, which supports the sense that the car is easy to count on in daily driving. Acura’s standard safety suite adds another layer of confidence for long-term ownership.

For used buyers, the main risk is less about the core drivetrain character and more about finding a well-kept example with the right maintenance history and no hidden wear from harder use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Acura TLX?

At 55.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, alignment, and any signs of prior repair. It also makes sense to focus on how the car drives, since the expert notes call out brake fade and longer stopping distances under repeated hard use.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base TLX FWD trim includes 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, keyless entry and ignition, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated sports seats with faux leather, and standard tech features, while higher trims add more luxury and convenience equipment.
• Powertrain: The base model uses a 2.4-liter engine with 206 hp and an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, while V6 trims use a 3.5-liter engine with 290 hp and a 9-speed transmission; the V6 brings stronger acceleration and a more muscular feel.
• Safety package: AcuraWatch is standard and includes adaptive cruise, auto high beams, lane-departure warning and intervention, forward-collision warning with auto brake, and road-departure mitigation. Blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and cameras are tied to optional packages or higher trims.
• Infotainment: The refreshed infotainment system is faster, but the dual-screen layout and dated graphics can still feel complicated. The Tech Package adds navigation with real-time traffic, an upgraded 10-speaker stereo with HD Radio, and a color multi-information display.
• Fuel efficiency: The base engine is rated at 23 mpg city and 33 mpg highway, while the V6 is rated at 20 mpg city and 32 mpg highway. With AWD, the V6 is rated at 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.

Which 2018 Acura TLX trim should I buy?

The 2018 Acura TLX is offered in 4 trim levels: TLX FWD, TLX V6, TLX V6 with Technology Package, and TLX V6 with Technology Package and A-Spec Package.

Here's the short version:

• TLX FWD: This is the entry point, and it already gives you a lot of standard equipment, including LED headlights, heated sports seats, dual-zone climate control, and AcuraWatch. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the TLX and can live without the stronger V6.
• TLX V6: This is the better all-around choice if you want the stronger 290-hp engine and quicker acceleration without jumping into the pricier packages. It adds the more powerful drivetrain and a more upscale feel, making it the best-value pick for many shoppers.
• TLX V6 with Technology Package: Choose this if you want the more complete luxury and convenience setup, including navigation, real leather, an upgraded stereo, blind-spot monitoring, and other premium touches. It’s the right step up if tech and comfort matter more than keeping the price down.
• TLX V6 with Technology Package and A-Spec Package: This is the most distinctive version, with the sportiest appearance and chassis tuning in the lineup. The A-Spec package adds the character that the overview calls out as the year’s real winner, so it’s the one to target if you want the TLX to feel less anonymous.

AcuraWatch is standard across the lineup, but blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and cameras are still tied to higher trims or packages.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Acura TLX?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.

• Deal availability: 35.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 544 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.70% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 55.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $18,061, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 Acura TLX's resale value?

The current average of $18,190 sits slightly below last year's $18,504.

That tells you the market has softened a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper what you can expect as a future seller. If you plan to resell later, the current trend suggests you should focus on buying well and keeping the car in strong condition so you have the best chance of preserving value.

The TLX’s broad appeal comes from its comfort, style, and updated equipment, which can help support demand when it’s time to sell. Strong owner satisfaction also tends to help a used luxury sedan stay attractive to the next buyer.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 Acura TLX safe?

The TLX earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, though IIHS gave it Acceptable ratings in the Driver’s Side Small Overlap and Headlight tests, and a Marginal rating for child-seat anchor ease of use.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

AcuraWatch is standard and includes adaptive cruise, auto high beams, lane-departure warning and intervention, forward-collision warning with auto brake, and road-departure mitigation. That gives you a solid baseline of driver assistance even on the lower trims.

The main caveat is that some IIHS results are weaker than the NHTSA score suggests, and blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and cameras are not standard on every version. The braking behavior noted by the expert also deserves attention if you plan to drive the car hard.

Should I buy a 2018 Acura TLX or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 35.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 55.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.70% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2018 refresh brought a faster infotainment system, extra standard safety, and the sporty A-Spec package that the expert review calls the real winner for the year.

The bottom line: If you want the most updated version of this first-generation TLX, the 2018 is the one to target because it adds meaningful equipment and a more appealing personality. If your priority is simply the lowest purchase price, a nearby year may save you money, but you’ll want to weigh that against the 2018’s stronger feature set and broader appeal.

How does the 2018 Acura TLX compare to the 2018 Honda Accord?

Our experts score the 2018 Acura TLX 7.8/10 and the 2018 Honda Accord 8.2/10.

The Accord is the stronger value play on paper, with a lower starting price, better fuel economy, and far more listings to shop. The TLX counters with a more upscale luxury-sedan feel, a stronger available V6, and a higher share of good and great deals.

If you want the more premium driving experience and don’t mind paying a bit more for it, the TLX makes sense. If you want the better all-around mainstream sedan with broader inventory and stronger efficiency, the Accord is the easier recommendation.
