Is the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?

The 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan can be a good fit if you want a compact SUV with a more premium feel and a smooth, responsive drive, but it is best approached with realistic expectations. Its user rating is 3.5/5, which points to a mixed but workable ownership experience.

Owners commonly praise the smooth driving experience, premium interior, and decent gas mileage. Many also like the compact size and handling, while the cabin quality and everyday practicality make it appealing if you want something that feels a bit more upscale than a typical small SUV.

Is the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?

The 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out as a compact SUV that tries to blend a more premium feel with everyday practicality. Owners generally appreciate its smooth driving experience, premium interior, and decent gas mileage, and some also value the compact size and handling.

That said, the model’s reputation was held back by reliability concerns, especially engine and electrical issues, so you should treat condition and maintenance history as especially important. For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is higher if the vehicle has incomplete service records or signs of prior repair work.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan?

At 61.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection from a mechanic who can check for body repairs, electrical issues, and engine-related concerns. Focus on overall condition, service records, and signs of inconsistent wear so you can separate a clean example from one that may become expensive later.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan?

This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can be selective if you shop carefully.

• Deal availability: 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,513 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.05% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 61.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $9,999, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?

The current average of $9,999 sits slightly below last year's $10,758.

That softer pricing suggests the Tiguan has lost some value over the past year, which can work against you if you buy at the wrong price. If you plan to resell later, your best protection is to buy near the low end of the market and choose a clean, well-documented example.

Because the current average is already below last year’s level, future resale strength will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and maintenance history. A well-kept Tiguan should hold up better than one with accident history or unresolved mechanical issues.

Should I buy a 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 61.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.05% compared with last year.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $12,200, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $9,999 average.
• It adds more cargo space and a stronger focus on backseat room.

The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2017 if you want the lower purchase price and are comfortable shopping carefully for condition. If you want more space and a more family-friendly layout, the 2018 is the better long-term choice, though you’ll pay more for it. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2017 remains the smarter entry point as long as you verify history and inspect it thoroughly.
