overall

Summary
With 71 currently listed for sale near Hartford, CT and an average price of $12,989, 25.4% of 2017 Volkswagen Passats for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Volkswagen Passat 4.86 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
74.6% of 2017 Passat models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Volkswagen Passat stands out as a refined take on the classic midsize American sedan, with a bit of refinement and some new standard features helping define its appeal. Volkswagen also simplified the trim lineup for this model year, dropping the SEL trim while keeping the SEL Premium.
That trim shuffle brought more standard equipment to the Passat’s upper trims. Every Passat trim above the base S now includes blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts and VW App Connect for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Every Passat also gets a standard forward-collision warning system with autonomous braking, which adds an important layer of everyday safety tech.
For buyers, the 2017 Passat’s appeal is easy to understand: it emphasizes comfort, fuel efficiency, value for money, and a spacious interior. Owners also praise its enjoyable driving experience and low maintenance costs, though some feel the engine power could be stronger.

Probably the best sedan Ive owned. Great fuel economy, comfortable for short and long trips, handles well, visibility is good enough, ample space for driver ans passengers, and trunk space is enormous. Only downside is the power, but you can always tune it for a bit more. I miss the passat. Maybe Ill get another one.

Owner feedback also points to reliability, dependability, and low maintenance costs, which are exactly the kinds of traits used buyers want to see in a family sedan. The driving impression reinforces that sense of durability with predictable power delivery and a composed, steady character. For you, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright fragility and more about choosing a well-kept example that has been maintained consistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Volkswagen Passat?
At 54.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or multiple owners. Focus on condition details that matter in daily use: interior wear, braking feel, tire condition, and whether the electronics and driver-assistance features work as expected. Because this model emphasizes comfort and value, a clean, well-maintained example is the one most likely to deliver the ownership experience you want.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S includes 16-inch alloys, dual-zone automatic climate control, auto headlights, a 5-inch touchscreen with reversing camera, cruise control, and forward-collision warning with auto braking. Moving up brings blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, and VW App Connect for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the R-Line adds 19-inch alloys, R-Line bumpers, heated front seats with driver power adjustment, pleather, and a larger 6.3-inch touchscreen with HD and satellite radio. The SE adds keyless entry and ignition, a sunroof, adaptive cruise, and rear air vents, while the SEL Premium adds real leather upholstery, a driver memory system, a power front passenger seat, a Fender stereo, and lane-departure warning.
- Powertrain: The 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder delivers 170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, with 23 mpg city and 34 highway for a 27 combined rating. The 3.6-liter V6 makes 280 hp and 258 lb-ft, reaches 60 mph quicker, and returns 20 mpg city and 28 highway for a 23 combined rating.
- Safety package: Every Passat gets forward-collision warning with autonomous braking. Above the base S, you also get blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts and VW App Connect. The SEL Premium adds lane-departure warning.
- Infotainment: The base model uses a 5-inch touchscreen with a reversing camera, while higher trims can move to a 6.3-inch screen. VW App Connect is included above the base S, and the Technology Package adds navigation and an upgraded infotainment system with 8 speakers.
- Fuel efficiency: The 1.8-liter engine is rated at 23 mpg city and 34 highway, or 27 combined. The 3.6-liter V6 is rated at 20 mpg city and 28 highway, or 23 combined.
Which 2017 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?
The 2017 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 4 trim levels: S, R-Line, SE, SEL Premium.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and still want core equipment like dual-zone climate control, a reversing camera, and forward-collision warning with auto braking. It makes sense if you care most about keeping costs down and can live without the extra connectivity and driver-assistance features found higher up.
- R-Line: This trim adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, and VW App Connect, along with heated front seats, driver power adjustment, and a larger touchscreen. It is the best-value step up if you want the biggest jump in everyday convenience and safety tech without going all the way to the upper trims.
- SE: This is the sweet spot for many shoppers because it adds keyless entry and ignition, a sunroof, adaptive cruise, and rear air vents while keeping the price jump reasonable. If you want the most balanced mix of comfort and features, this is the trim to target.
- SEL Premium: This is the luxury-leaning choice, with real leather upholstery, a driver memory system, a power front passenger seat, a Fender stereo, and lane-departure warning. Choose it if you want the most upscale Passat experience and are willing to pay for it.
The safety package starts with forward-collision warning and auto braking on every trim, while blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alerts begin above the base S.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Volkswagen Passat?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without rushing into the first listing you see.
- Deal availability: 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 760 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.70% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 54.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,532, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?
The current average of $10,612 sits slightly below last year's $11,253.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price and keep the car in strong condition, you can reduce the hit from future depreciation. The Passat’s value-oriented reputation and strong owner satisfaction should help it remain appealing to used shoppers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Volkswagen Passat safe?
The 2017 Volkswagen Passat earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with a four-star rating in front-impact protection, and IIHS top marks in all categories.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Every Passat gets forward-collision warning with autonomous braking, and above the base S you also get blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts plus VW App Connect. The SEL Premium adds lane-departure warning. The main caveat is that the front-impact result is not perfect, so if safety is a top priority, you should pay close attention to crash history and the condition of the car you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2017 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.70% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Volkswagen simplified the trim lineup and added standard safety and connectivity features above the base S.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $9,324, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,612 average.
- It’s a straightforward family sedan that rewards buyers who look past its reputation.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $12,410, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $10,612 average.
- It adds a more powerful base engine and a new GT trim with a V6.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, comfort, and standard safety tech, the 2017 is the smart default. If you’re shopping strictly on price, the 2016 can save you money, while the 2018 makes sense if you want the newer powertrain and are willing to pay more.
