Is the 2017 Toyota Tacoma a good car?

Generally — the 2017 Toyota Tacoma earns a 4.2/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers commonly praise its reliable feel, great performance, and value, and they also like its handling and upgraded features. The Tacoma’s use case is especially appealing if you want a rugged midsize truck that still works well for everyday driving, though some shoppers note the pricing and interior space tradeoffs. Is the 2017 Toyota Tacoma reliable?

Owners rate it 4.2/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback repeatedly points to the Tacoma as reliable, durable, and long-lasting, with owners also describing it as dependable and trouble-free over time. That kind of language matters for a used truck, especially when you want something you can count on for years of ownership. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is paying too much for a truck that has been used hard or not maintained carefully.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota Tacoma?

At 60.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection from a trusted mechanic. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the truck’s wear matches its mileage and asking price. If a listing looks especially clean, make sure the condition story is backed up by documentation and a careful inspection.

The current average of $25,942 sits slightly below last year's $26,442.

That modest decline suggests the market has cooled a bit, but not enough to undermine the Tacoma’s long-term appeal. If you buy well, you still have a truck with strong name recognition and steady shopper interest. For a future seller, that combination can help support a healthier exit price than many other midsize trucks.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2017 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 60.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.89% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.2/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $23,719, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $25,942 average.
• It offers a proven, durability-focused setup with broad buyer appeal.

The bottom line: If you want the newer model year and are comfortable shopping carefully, the 2017 is the better primary path because it still offers strong owner satisfaction and a decent share of good deals. If your priority is saving money up front, the 2016 is the better secondary path because it comes in noticeably cheaper while keeping the Tacoma’s core strengths.
