CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Toyota Sienna

Summary
With 81 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,919, 25.9% of 2017 Toyota Sienna listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Toyota Sienna 4.88 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Toyota Sienna stands out as a practical, family-focused minivan with a reputation for safety, reliability, and versatility. It offers three rows of seating, plenty of passenger room, and a cabin that can be opened up for a large amount of cargo space when the second and third rows are removed. That flexibility is a major part of its appeal, especially for buyers who need one vehicle to handle people-moving and hauling duties.
For 2017, the Sienna was still part of the third generation, and Toyota had already given it a more powerful V6 for that model year. The engine output was 296 horsepower, and the revised setup was paired with a new eight-speed transmission. Toyota also added direct fuel injection for that year, and the Sienna could be had with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Standard Toyota SafetySense and a nine-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto helped make it feel well equipped, while the available trim range added features such as captain’s chairs, four-zone climate control, leather-trimmed seats, and a JBL audio system on higher versions.
At the same time, the 2017 Toyota Sienna is not without drawbacks. The source notes that the new eight-speed transmission could be problematic, particularly for the 2017 and 2018 model years, and power sliding doors have also been a recurring concern in this generation. Even so, the Sienna remains appealing for shoppers who value space, comfort, and a strong reputation for dependable family transportation.

I purchased this vehicle for the reliability factor, but have absolutely been blown away by the engineering factor. I have never owned a vehicle so we’ll planned out. I mean from the hood prop, in-cab adjustable HID headlights, to the bottle holders (yes, it’s got cup holders front and telescopic for the middle seats) but up front the Toyota engineers thought, “hey, where do they put their Topo Chico bottles while their coffee sits in the cup holders?” Oh I know… and bam, their they are, sliding out from the dash. The 295hp is in a heavy vehicle, so it’s not peppy like a Mustang or Camero, but cruising at 60mph and you need to quickly pass someone… done! Those 8-gears means there’s always one for the moment and when you press that accelerator, she takes off. I can honestly say that I’m fully impressed with the workmanship, engineering and features of this Toyota Sienna Limited.

Is the 2017 Toyota Sienna a good car?
Yes — 4.88/5 is a strong user rating, and it lines up with the Sienna’s family-focused strengths. Drivers consistently praise its spacious interior, comfort, and reliability, and many also value the versatile seating and convenient features that make it especially useful for families. With three rows of seating and a cabin that can open up for cargo, it fits buyers who need one vehicle to handle both people-moving and hauling duties. With 32.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Toyota Sienna reliable?
Owners rate it 4.88/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to reliability, dependability, and a trouble-free ownership experience, with many drivers describing it as a vehicle they can count on for family use over the long term. That said, used buyers should still pay close attention to maintenance history and condition, because age and prior use can affect long-term ownership risk.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota Sienna?
At 53.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can catch hidden body, suspension, or mechanical issues. Focus especially on overall condition, signs of prior repairs, and whether the vehicle has been maintained consistently. Given the model-year concerns noted for the transmission and power sliding doors, those systems deserve extra attention during your evaluation.

What is the 2017 Toyota Sienna's resale value?
The current average of $19,378 sits slightly below last year's $19,873.
That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend more heavily on condition, mileage, and maintenance history than on broad market momentum. Well-kept examples should still hold appeal because shoppers continue to value the Sienna’s practicality and family-friendly layout.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 53.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.49% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $17,204, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $19,378 average.
- It offers strong tech and broad family utility.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $21,682, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $19,378 average.
- It stands out for buyers who want all-wheel drive.
The bottom line: The 2017 is the best fit if you want a well-liked, family-friendly Sienna at a softer price than last year. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2016 is the better value play; if all-wheel drive matters most, the 2018 is worth the extra spend.
