CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Toyota Sienna

Summary
With 1,062 currently listed for sale and an average price of $19,592, 30.4% of 2017 Toyota Siennas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Toyota Sienna 4.88 / 5 stars.
53.8% of 2017 Sienna models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Toyota Sienna stands out as a practical family minivan with a reputation for safety, reliability, and a highly versatile interior. It offers three rows of seating, plenty of passenger room, and a cabin that can be reconfigured for a large amount of cargo space with a low load floor. That flexibility is a major part of its appeal, especially for buyers who need one vehicle to handle people-moving and hauling duties.
For 2017, the Sienna was still part of the third generation, and Toyota had already given it a stronger V6 setup by that point. The 2017 model year brought direct fuel injection to the V6, raising output to 296 horsepower, and it also introduced a new eight-speed transmission. Toyota also added extra USB charging ports and standard Toyota Safety Sense for 2018, so buyers looking at this generation can see how the Sienna steadily gained more convenience and driver-assistance equipment over time. Even so, the 2017 Toyota Sienna is also one to avoid because of transmission issues, so a careful test drive matters.
What keeps the Sienna appealing is that it combines everyday comfort with useful features and strong family-friendly packaging. Owners commonly praise its spaciousness, comfort, and versatility, which line up with the model’s long-standing strengths. At the same time, the 2017 Toyota Sienna’s transmission concerns are an important drawback, and power sliding doors can also be a headache on this generation, so it is best suited to shoppers who value space and practicality enough to inspect one carefully before buying.

I purchased this vehicle for the reliability factor, but have absolutely been blown away by the engineering factor. I have never owned a vehicle so we’ll planned out. I mean from the hood prop, in-cab adjustable HID headlights, to the bottle holders (yes, it’s got cup holders front and telescopic for the middle seats) but up front the Toyota engineers thought, “hey, where do they put their Topo Chico bottles while their coffee sits in the cup holders?” Oh I know… and bam, their they are, sliding out from the dash. The 295hp is in a heavy vehicle, so it’s not peppy like a Mustang or Camero, but cruising at 60mph and you need to quickly pass someone… done! Those 8-gears means there’s always one for the moment and when you press that accelerator, she takes off. I can honestly say that I’m fully impressed with the workmanship, engineering and features of this Toyota Sienna Limited.

| Year-Round High | $20,138 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $20,134 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.38% |

There are 1,083 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2017 Toyota Sienna a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Toyota Sienna earns a 4.88/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its spacious interior, comfort, and versatility, and many also value it as an excellent family vehicle with convenient features. That lines up well with its role as a practical minivan for people-moving and cargo-hauling, especially if you want one vehicle that can handle both daily errands and bigger family duties. With 30.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a meaningful number of opportunities to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Toyota Sienna reliable?
Owners rate it 4.88/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers describe it as reliable and dependable, and the review summary also highlights trouble-free ownership and confidence in the vehicle over time. That said, used buyers should still treat condition as the deciding factor, because long-term ownership risk depends heavily on maintenance history and how carefully the van was driven and serviced.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota Sienna?
At 54.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can confirm accident records, title status, and service history before you go any further. Then prioritize a thorough inspection, with extra attention to the transmission, sliding doors, and overall wear since those are the kinds of issues that can matter most on a used minivan. Focus on condition first and features second, because a clean, well-maintained example is the one most likely to reward you over time.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Toyota Sienna?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,083 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.38% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 54.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,599, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Toyota Sienna's resale value?
The current average of $19,655 sits slightly below last year's $20,134.
That softer pricing suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more carefully now but may also temper short-term resale gains later. If you plan to sell in a few years, your return will depend heavily on mileage, condition, and whether the van has a clean history. Well-kept examples should hold up better than average because family-friendly minivans tend to stay in demand when they remain practical and presentable.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.38% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $17,546, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $19,655 average.
- It adds Siri Eyes Free for iPhone users.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $21,867, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $19,655 average.
- It adds all-wheel drive for buyers who need extra traction.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, owner satisfaction, and current market availability, the 2017 is the primary year to target. If your budget is tighter, the 2016 is the better value play, while the 2018 makes sense if you specifically want to spend more for all-wheel-drive capability.
