CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Toyota RAV4

Summary
With 2,837 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,613, 30.8% of 2017 Toyota RAV4s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Toyota RAV4 4.48 / 5 stars.
52.9% of 2017 RAV4 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Toyota RAV4 stands out as a practical, well-equipped compact SUV that leans more toward usefulness than excitement. It comes from the generation that made the RAV4 a mainstream family hauler, and by this point Toyota had broadened the lineup with more trim choices and a more rugged-looking approach than earlier versions. For buyers, that means the 2017 model offers the familiar RAV4 formula of everyday versatility, with enough available equipment to make it feel modern without losing the model’s reputation for being easy to live with.
What makes this year especially appealing is the balance of standard features and efficiency. The RAV4 lineup includes a 203-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive is standard with all-wheel drive optional. It also comes standard with keyless entry, Toyota Safety Sense, LED daytime running lights, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which gives it a strong value proposition for a used SUV. The hybrid version is even more compelling for shoppers who want smoother operation and better fuel economy, with 219 horsepower and up to 40 mpg combined, though it typically costs more than the gas-only model.
There are tradeoffs, though. The RAV4 is described as plain inside and out, and the engine is noisy and gruff. Even so, that straightforward character is part of its appeal: it is a dependable, practical crossover with a long list of useful features, strong reliability, and the kind of everyday competence that has made the RAV4 such a lasting favorite.

We got the LE trim. Not too many fancy features that I dont care about like a sunroof. The automatic transmission has 4 low manual gears available for driving over mountains, etc. Highway mileage up to 29 mpg. Practical and reliable.

This is the second Rav4Limited I have bought. I bought one in 2016 for my daughter. When it was my turn for a new vehicle I bought one for myself. I love all the safety features, the smooth ride. The only thing I do not like is how hard the seats are.

Smoother and quieter than my older model. Better acceleration and gas mileage too. So far, so good. Bought with only 36k, driven about 200 miles since purchase, so time will tell.

How much does the 2017 Toyota RAV4 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $17,605 |
| Year-Round Low | $16,662 |
| Year-Round High | $17,711 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $17,699 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −0.53% |
Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
There are 2,815 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2017 Toyota RAV4 a good car?
Generally — the 4.48/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners repeatedly praise its reliability, fuel economy, and cargo space, and many also like the smooth ride and broad feature set. In practical terms, that lines up well with the RAV4’s role as a useful compact SUV for everyday driving, especially if you want something easy to live with rather than especially sporty. With 31.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Toyota RAV4 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.48/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights reliability, and the broader owner comments also point to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience that many drivers feel comfortable counting on over time. That kind of reputation matters if you plan to keep the vehicle for the long haul, because it suggests lower anxiety about day-to-day use and fewer surprises as the miles add up. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the model’s basic durability and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not worn down by neglect.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota RAV4?
At 52.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage or repeated claims. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on overall condition, maintenance records, and signs of past repair quality, since those details matter more when you’re choosing among a large pool of used SUVs.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Toyota RAV4?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,815 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 52.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,662, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Toyota RAV4's resale value?
The current average of $17,605 sits slightly below last year's $17,699.
That small decline suggests the market has stayed fairly stable rather than swinging sharply in either direction. For a future seller, that kind of pricing pattern is helpful because it points to predictable demand and less risk of a sudden value drop. If you keep the vehicle in good condition and maintain it well, you’re more likely to preserve a stronger resale position when it’s time to trade or sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.48/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Toyota RAV4 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 52.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.48/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want a well-equipped, practical compact SUV with strong owner approval and a stable price profile, the 2017 is the right place to focus first. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can also compare nearby years to see whether a slightly older or newer example gives you a better mix of condition, mileage, and asking price.
