CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Toyota RAV4

Summary
With 2,790 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,589, 30.9% of 2017 Toyota RAV4s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Toyota RAV4 4.48 / 5 stars.
52.0% of 2017 RAV4 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Toyota RAV4 stands out as a practical, well-equipped compact SUV that leans more toward usefulness than excitement. It comes from the generation that made the RAV4 a mainstream family hauler, and by this point Toyota had broadened the lineup with more trim choices and a more rugged-looking approach than earlier versions. For buyers, that means the 2017 model offers the familiar RAV4 formula of everyday versatility, with enough available equipment to make it feel modern without losing the model’s reputation for being easy to live with.
What makes this year especially appealing is the balance of standard features and efficiency. The RAV4 lineup includes a 203-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive is standard with all-wheel drive optional. It also comes standard with keyless entry, Toyota Safety Sense, LED daytime running lights, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which gives it a strong value proposition for a used SUV. The hybrid version is even more compelling for shoppers who want smoother operation and better fuel economy, with 219 horsepower and up to 40 mpg combined, though it typically costs more than the gas-only model.
There are tradeoffs, though. The RAV4 is described as plain inside and out, and the engine is noisy and gruff. Even so, that straightforward character is part of its appeal: it is a dependable, practical crossover with a long list of useful features, strong reliability, and the kind of everyday competence that has made the RAV4 such a lasting favorite.

We got the LE trim. Not too many fancy features that I dont care about like a sunroof. The automatic transmission has 4 low manual gears available for driving over mountains, etc. Highway mileage up to 29 mpg. Practical and reliable.

This is the second Rav4Limited I have bought. I bought one in 2016 for my daughter. When it was my turn for a new vehicle I bought one for myself. I love all the safety features, the smooth ride. The only thing I do not like is how hard the seats are.

Smoother and quieter than my older model. Better acceleration and gas mileage too. So far, so good. Bought with only 36k, driven about 200 miles since purchase, so time will tell.

Generally — the 4.48/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. The owner feedback also emphasizes reliability, and that theme shows up alongside comments about fuel economy and cargo space. Drivers describe it as a vehicle they can count on for everyday use, with the kind of dependable character that matters in a used SUV. For used buyers, that usually means lower ownership stress over time, especially if you choose a well-kept example with a clean history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota RAV4?
At 52.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can confirm accident records, title status, and ownership patterns before you commit. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing has higher mileage or incomplete service documentation. Focus on overall condition, since a clean-looking SUV can still hide wear that affects long-term value and ownership confidence.

That small decline suggests the market has been fairly stable, which can help you if you buy carefully and plan to resell later. A steady price pattern usually means you are less likely to see dramatic value swings, especially with a model that already has broad shopper appeal. Strong owner satisfaction also helps support demand when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.48/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Toyota RAV4 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 52.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.48/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 is a smart primary choice if you want a practical, well-liked compact SUV with stable pricing and strong owner approval. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the best-maintained example rather than the newest badge, since condition and history matter a lot in this market.
