Nicest car I’ve ever owned! Beautiful color, absolutely loaded with options. Comfortable, great power, handles well in snow. Easy access to third row with captains’ seats in second row. Easy to operate radio/clock/blue tooth. It’s similar to Honda Pilot, but maybe a bit smaller. I traded in a Honda CRX and found Highlander just as easy to drive and park. Excellent value.

Yes — the 4.86/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.17/10.
The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel and Form and function.
Owners repeatedly praise its comfort, power, family-friendly design, and smooth driving experience. The Highlander also stands out for its spacious interior and practical storage solutions, which fit the needs of families and daily use well.
For you, that means this is a strong pick if you want a midsize SUV that balances comfort with utility, especially if you value a relaxed ride and a well-equipped cabin. The market also shows 32.2% good and great deals, which gives you room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe it as reliable and dependable, with a reputation for a trouble-free ownership experience and a vehicle you can count on over the long term. The expert review also points to a capable V6 and an 8-speed automatic that work together smoothly in everyday driving.
The standard Toyota Safety Sense suite adds a layer of confidence, and the expert review notes that the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific vehicle you choose has been maintained well and hasn’t picked up hidden wear from prior use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota Highlander?
At 61% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with a lower-than-average price. Focus on condition details that matter in a family SUV: cabin wear, seat functionality, electronics, and signs of uneven use. If you’re comparing trims, make sure the features you want are actually present on the specific vehicle you’re looking at.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LE starts with the essentials, but you’ll want to pay attention to what it leaves out compared with higher trims, especially if you want more convenience and comfort features.
- Powertrain: The 3.5-liter V6 is the engine to focus on, and the updated 8-speed automatic helps efficiency while delivering stronger performance than the base 4-cylinder.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning and auto braking, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams. Some convenience and visibility features are reserved for higher trims.
- Infotainment: The available 8-inch touchscreen and four USB charge ports are useful family features, while the rear-seat BluRay system and some camera features are limited to higher trims.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 is rated at 20 mpg city, 27 highway, and 23 combined with rear-wheel drive, or 19 city, 26 highway, and 22 combined with all-wheel drive. Real-world driving returned about 19 mpg.
Which 2017 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?
The 2017 Toyota Highlander is offered in 5 trim levels: LE, LE Plus, XLE, SE, Limited, Limited Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The LE is the least expensive entry point, but it comes with the weaker 4-cylinder engine and misses the stronger value and convenience mix you get as you move up.
- Sweet-spot trim: The LE Plus is the best value starting point because it adds the features many shoppers expect, including tri-zone climate control, an 8-inch touchscreen, a power driver’s seat, and a power liftgate.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited and Limited Platinum bring the most luxury and tech, including leather, heated and ventilated front seats, JBL audio, second-row captain’s chairs, a panoramic sunroof, and additional parking sensors.
- Off-road trim: The SE is the one to consider if you want the sportier suspension and styling, but it’s not the best choice if your priority is everyday comfort over a firmer ride.
The standard Toyota Safety Sense suite is a major plus across the lineup, but keyless entry and ignition don’t show up until the XLE, so that’s an important trim-level gap to keep in mind.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Toyota Highlander?
The market looks moderately favorable if you’re a selective buyer.
- Deal availability: 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,046 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.30% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,639.13, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Toyota Highlander's resale value?
The current average of $20,484 sits slightly below last year's $21,184.
That kind of softening can help you buy more confidently now, but it also means a future sale may need to be priced competitively if the market stays loose. The good news is that this model's strong owner satisfaction should help support demand when you eventually resell it.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander safe?
The Highlander earns top marks from both IIHS and NHTSA, with the IIHS giving it top scores in all tests except headlights, which were rated Acceptable, and NHTSA giving it a five-star overall rating with four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover tests.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning and auto braking, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams. That standard suite is a major strength, especially because it gives you advanced driver assistance without forcing you into a higher trim.
The main caveat is the headlights result from IIHS, which is the one area that keeps this from being a completely clean sweep.
Should I buy a 2017 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.30% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The updated V6, new 8-speed transmission, and standard Toyota Safety Sense make this year especially appealing.
The bottom line: If you want a well-rounded midsize SUV with strong safety, solid owner satisfaction, and a good mix of comfort and utility, the 2017 is the year to target. If your priority is simply the lowest possible price, you may want to compare nearby model years and focus on the best-maintained example rather than the newest badge.
