What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota Highlander?

At 60.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, alignment, and any signs of prior repair quality. It also makes sense to focus on how the cabin and convenience features have held up, since this model’s appeal depends heavily on comfort and everyday usability.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LE starts with the basics, but the LE Plus adds tri-zone climate control, an 8-inch touchscreen, a power driver’s seat, and a power liftgate. The XLE is where keyless entry and ignition appear, while the Limited adds rear parking sensors, heated and ventilated front seats with driver memory, an upgraded 12-speaker JBL sound system, and second-row captain’s chairs. The Limited Platinum adds a panoramic sunroof, front parking sensors, auto wipers, and heat for the steering wheel and second-row seats.
• Powertrain: The 3.5-liter V6 is the engine to focus on, with increased output and an 8-speed automatic transmission. It is described as capable in traffic and on the highway, and the V6 returns 20 mpg city and 27 highway with rear-wheel drive, or 19 city and 26 highway with all-wheel drive.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes adaptive cruise with forward-collision warning and auto braking, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams. The base trim still gets this important suite, which is a major advantage for used shoppers.
• Infotainment: The LE Plus brings an 8-inch touchscreen, and the model also offers four USB charge ports. Higher trims can add rear-seat entertainment and a 12-speaker JBL stereo, while the top Limited Platinum is where rear parking sensors and a 360-degree camera are available.
• Fuel efficiency: The V6 is rated at 20 mpg city and 27 highway with rear-wheel drive, or 19 city and 26 highway with all-wheel drive. Real-world driving returned an average of 19 mpg.

Which 2017 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?

The 2017 Toyota Highlander is offered in 5 trim levels: LE, LE Plus, XLE, SE, Limited.

Here's the short version:

• LE: This is the entry point, but the base 4-cylinder is described as underpowered and unrefined, so you should treat it as the least appealing choice unless price is your only priority.
• LE Plus: This is the best-value trim because it adds the features many shoppers will want right away, including tri-zone climate control, an 8-inch touchscreen, a power driver’s seat, and a power liftgate.
• XLE: This trim is the point where keyless entry and ignition arrive, making it the better pick if you want a more complete everyday ownership experience.
• SE: This is the trim to test drive if you want the sportier setup, since it adds a retuned suspension, LED running lights, 19-inch alloys, and sporty styling inside and out.
• Limited: This is the luxury-leaning choice, with rear parking sensors, heated and ventilated front seats, driver memory, a JBL audio upgrade, and second-row captain’s chairs.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the lineup, which is a major plus no matter which trim you choose.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Toyota Highlander?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,257 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.43% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 60.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $19,615, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Toyota Highlander's resale value?

The current average of $20,013 sits slightly below last year's $20,941.

That decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can be good news if you are buying now but less favorable if you are planning to sell soon. A softer price trend usually means future resale gains may be more limited unless the vehicle is especially well kept and attractively equipped.

The Highlander’s strong owner satisfaction should help support demand over time, especially among shoppers who value comfort and family-friendly practicality. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander safe?

The 2017 Toyota Highlander earns top overall marks from both IIHS and NHTSA, with an Acceptable IIHS rating for headlights and five-star overall NHTSA results, though it also earns four-star ratings in the frontal crash and rollover tests.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard, and it includes adaptive cruise with forward-collision warning and auto braking, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams. That standard suite is a major strength, especially because it comes on the base trim.

The main caveat is the IIHS headlight result, which is weaker than the rest of the crash performance. Even so, the overall safety picture remains strong for a used three-row SUV.

Should I buy a 2017 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 60.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.43% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 stands out for adding refreshed styling, an updated engine, standard Toyota Safety Sense, and a new sporty SE trim.

The bottom line: If you want the refreshed version with standard safety tech and strong owner approval, the 2017 is the right target. If your priority is stretching your budget further, you may want to compare it with nearby years that could offer lower asking prices, but the 2017 remains the better pick when you want the updated package and a well-rounded ownership experience.

How does the 2017 Toyota Highlander compare to the 2017 Honda Pilot?

Our experts score the 2017 Toyota Highlander 7.2/10 and the 2017 Honda Pilot 7.2/10.

The Highlander is the more affordable used buy here, while the Pilot brings more horsepower and stronger highway fuel economy. The Highlander also has a slightly better good-and-great deal share and a marginally higher accident-free share, which may make it the easier one to shop if you want a broader pool of listings. If you value lower average used pricing and a strong safety-focused standard equipment story, the Highlander has the edge; if you want more power and a bit more highway efficiency, the Pilot is the alternative to consider.
