That kind of standard equipment helps reduce ownership stress, but you should still verify maintenance history and overall condition carefully on any used example.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota Highlander?

At 59.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of bodywork, panel alignment, and signs of prior repair. It also makes sense to focus on how the cabin and major features have held up, since this model’s appeal depends heavily on comfort and everyday usability.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LE starts with alloy wheels, heated mirrors, Bluetooth, wiper de-icers, and standard Toyota Safety Sense, while the LE Plus adds tri-zone climate control, an 8-inch touchscreen, a power driver’s seat, and a power liftgate. The XLE is where keyless entry and ignition appear, and the Limited and Limited Platinum add more luxury and convenience equipment.
• Powertrain: The 3.5-liter V6 gains 25 hp and 15 lb-ft for 2017 and pairs with an 8-speed automatic. The review notes that the V6 is capable in traffic and on the highway, and it also cites EPA estimates of 20 mpg city, 27 highway, and 23 combined with rear-wheel drive, or 19 city, 26 highway, and 22 combined with all-wheel drive.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes adaptive cruise with forward-collision warning and auto braking, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams. The base setup is strong, but rear parking sensors and a 360-degree camera are reserved for the top Limited Platinum trim.
• Infotainment: The LE Plus brings an 8-inch touchscreen, and the tech content also notes four USB charge ports. Higher trims can add rear-seat entertainment, navigation, and a 12-speaker JBL sound system.
• Fuel efficiency: The V6 is rated at 20 mpg city, 27 highway, and 23 combined with rear-wheel drive, or 19 city, 26 highway, and 22 combined with all-wheel drive.

Which 2017 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?

The 2017 Toyota Highlander is offered in 5 trim levels: LE, LE Plus, XLE, SE, Limited, and Limited Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• LE: This is the entry point, but the base 4-cylinder is described as underpowered and unrefined, so you should treat the V6 as the real starting point if you want the Highlander to feel right. It gives you the essentials plus standard Toyota Safety Sense, but it is best viewed as the budget choice rather than the best-value pick.
• LE Plus: This is the trim where the Highlander starts to make the most sense, because it adds tri-zone climate control, an 8-inch touchscreen, a power driver’s seat, and a power liftgate. If you want the best balance of price and equipment, this is the trim to focus on first.
• XLE: This trim is the one to target if you want the convenience features that many shoppers expect, including keyless entry and ignition. It also moves you closer to the more upscale side of the lineup without jumping all the way to the luxury-oriented trims.
• SE: This is the sporty choice, with a retuned suspension, LED running lights, 19-inch alloys, and styling upgrades inside and out. The review specifically recommends test-driving the SE before deciding, so it is the trim to choose if you care about a firmer, more distinctive driving feel.
• Limited: This trim adds rear parking sensors, heated and ventilated front seats with driver memory, a 12-speaker JBL sound system, and second-row captain’s chairs. It is the right pick if you want a more premium family hauler.
• Limited Platinum: This is the top-end version, with a panoramic sunroof, front parking sensors, auto wipers, and heat for the steering wheel and second-row seats. It is the most feature-rich choice, but it makes the most sense if you want maximum comfort and convenience.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard, which is a major plus across the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Toyota Highlander?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,112 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.28% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 59.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $19,630, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Toyota Highlander's resale value?

The current average of $20,165 sits slightly below last year's $20,848.

That softer pricing can work in your favor if you buy now, because you may be entering the market after some of the depreciation has already played out. For a future seller, the current trend suggests you should expect value to remain tied closely to condition, mileage, and equipment rather than broad market momentum alone.

The Highlander’s strong owner satisfaction rating helps support demand, especially among shoppers looking for a dependable family SUV with standard safety equipment and a practical three-row layout. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander safe?

The 2017 Toyota Highlander earns top overall marks from both IIHS and NHTSA, with an Acceptable IIHS rating for headlights and four-star ratings in the frontal crash and rollover tests from NHTSA, plus five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard, and it includes adaptive cruise with forward-collision warning and auto braking, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams. That standard suite is a major strength, though the IIHS headlight result is the main caveat to keep in mind.

Should I buy a 2017 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 59.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.28% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 model year stands out for its refreshed styling, updated V6, new SE trim, and standard Toyota Safety Sense.

The bottom line: If you want the refreshed Highlander with standard safety tech and strong owner approval, the 2017 is the one to target. If you are especially price-sensitive, you should compare individual listings closely and prioritize condition, accident history, and equipment level over model-year differences.
