CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Toyota Highlander
overall

Summary
With 168 currently listed for sale near Chicago, IL and an average price of $20,682.00, 28.6% of 2017 Toyota Highlanders for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Toyota Highlander 4.86 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
80.4% of 2017 Highlander models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Toyota Highlander stands out as a family-oriented crossover that was refreshed to stay competitive. Toyota gave it updated styling, an updated V6 engine, a new sport-oriented SE trim, and made its Safety Sense system standard, giving the Highlander a stronger mix of appearance, performance, and safety equipment than before.
That combination helps explain why the Highlander remained appealing to buyers looking for a comfortable and well-equipped SUV. The available owner feedback reinforces that appeal, with praise for its comfort, power, and smooth driving experience, along with its family-friendly design and useful features. At the same time, some owners noted disappointment with the spare tire and bucket seat options, so the Highlander’s strengths are balanced by a few practical compromises.

Nicest car I’ve ever owned! Beautiful color, absolutely loaded with options. Comfortable, great power, handles well in snow. Easy access to third row with captains’ seats in second row. Easy to operate radio/clock/blue tooth. It’s similar to Honda Pilot, but maybe a bit smaller. I traded in a Honda CRX and found Highlander just as easy to drive and park. Excellent value.

With 31.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with buyers repeatedly calling out the Highlander’s comfort and overall value. The expert notes reinforce that impression by emphasizing the updated V6 and the standard safety package, both of which support confidence in everyday use. Toyota also made the first scheduled maintenance visit part of the ownership story here, which helps lower early upkeep friction.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is choosing a poorly maintained example, so service records and condition matter more than the badge alone.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota Highlander?
At 62.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the interior and electronics show wear that matches the mileage. Because this is a family SUV, make sure the seating, cargo area, and safety equipment all work as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LE comes with alloy wheels, heated mirrors, Bluetooth, wiper de-icers, and Toyota Safety Sense, but it still starts with the older 2.7-liter four-cylinder and lacks the more desirable comfort and convenience upgrades. The LE Plus adds tri-zone climate control, an 8-inch touchscreen, a power driver’s seat, and a power liftgate, while the XLE is where keyless entry and ignition finally appear.
- Powertrain: The updated 3.5-liter V6 gains 25 hp and 15 lb-ft, and it pairs with an 8-speed automatic. Fuel economy is listed at 20 mpg city, 27 highway, and 23 combined with rear-wheel drive, or 19 city, 26 highway, and 22 combined with all-wheel drive.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning and auto braking, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams. The safety suite is a major advantage, especially on lower trims where it helps offset feature gaps.
- Infotainment: The Highlander offers an 8-inch touchscreen on the LE Plus, four USB charge ports, and an optional rear-seat BluRay entertainment system with a 9-inch display and wireless headphones. The Limited trim adds a 12-speaker JBL sound system, while rear parking sensors and a 360-degree camera are reserved for the top Limited Platinum trim.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 is rated at 20 mpg city, 27 highway, and 23 combined with rear-wheel drive, or 19 city, 26 highway, and 22 combined with all-wheel drive. In real-world driving, the expert saw an average of 19 mpg.
Which 2017 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?
The 2017 Toyota Highlander is offered in 5 trim levels: LE, LE Plus, XLE, SE, Limited, and Limited Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The LE is the least appealing choice because it starts with the older 2.7-liter four-cylinder and misses the more useful comfort and convenience upgrades. Even though it includes Toyota Safety Sense, it feels like the trim where you give up too much to save money.
- Sweet-spot trim: The LE Plus is the best value because it adds the 8-inch touchscreen, tri-zone climate control, power driver’s seat, and power liftgate. It gives you the features most shoppers actually want without pushing you into luxury pricing.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the best pick if you want the upscale stuff, since it adds leather, heated and ventilated front seats, a driver memory system, a 12-speaker JBL audio system, and second-row captain’s chairs.
- Off-road trim: The SE is worth a look if you want the sportier suspension and styling, but it is not the best daily-driver value if your priority is comfort and convenience.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the lineup, so even the lower trims get a strong safety foundation.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Toyota Highlander?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting a fire sale.
- Deal availability: 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,084 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.86% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,632.64, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Toyota Highlander's resale value?
The current average of $20,534 sits slightly below last year's $21,138.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled enough to give you some negotiating room now, but not so much that the Highlander has lost broad appeal. If you buy well and keep mileage and condition in check, you should have a decent path to resale later. The model’s strong owner satisfaction also helps support demand when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander safe?
The Highlander earns top overall marks from both IIHS and NHTSA, with an Acceptable rating for headlights from IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, including four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover tests.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning and auto braking, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams. That standard suite is a major strength, especially because it gives even lower trims a strong baseline of driver assistance. The main caveat is the IIHS headlight result, which is weaker than the rest of the crash performance.
Should I buy a 2017 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.86% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The updated V6, new 8-speed automatic, and standard Toyota Safety Sense make this year especially appealing.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of value, safety, and family usefulness, the 2017 is the one to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can still shop the market carefully and focus on the best-maintained examples, but the 2017 stands out because it combines a softer price trend with strong owner satisfaction and meaningful equipment upgrades.
