Nicest car I’ve ever owned! Beautiful color, absolutely loaded with options. Comfortable, great power, handles well in snow. Easy access to third row with captains’ seats in second row. Easy to operate radio/clock/blue tooth. It’s similar to Honda Pilot, but maybe a bit smaller. I traded in a Honda CRX and found Highlander just as easy to drive and park. Excellent value.

If you find a listing below $19,633.61, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander a good car?
Yes — it earns a 4.86/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel and Form and function.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, power, and family-friendly design, along with the smooth driving experience and strong value. The overview also points to a spacious interior and practical storage solutions, which fit the needs of families and daily use well. With a blend of comfort, power, and useful features, it makes sense if you want a three-row crossover that prioritizes everyday livability.
The market also shows 31.7% good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, and it also highlights the Highlander’s overall value and family-friendly appeal. The expert evaluation reinforces that sense of durability by emphasizing the updated V6 and the way the vehicle keeps its performance and efficiency balanced. Toyota’s standard safety suite and the model’s broad appeal also support the idea that this is a vehicle built for long-term use.
For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about the model’s reputation and more about how well a specific example has been maintained over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota Highlander?
At 62.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Pay close attention to signs of prior bodywork, uneven panel gaps, tire wear, and any evidence that the vehicle was repaired after a collision. Because this is a family-focused crossover, condition matters most in the areas you’ll use every day: seating, cargo space, electronics, and safety systems.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LE starts with the essentials, but you’ll want to watch for feature gaps if you expect more convenience. The LE Plus adds the kinds of amenities many shoppers now consider must-haves, while higher trims bring leather, rear-seat entertainment, heated seats, and navigation.
- Powertrain: The updated 3.5-liter V6 is the engine to focus on, and the 8-speed automatic helps it deliver stronger performance while keeping efficiency in check. The base 4-cylinder is described as underpowered and unrefined for this vehicle’s size.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning and auto braking, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams. The base trim still gets this suite, which is a major advantage.
- Infotainment: The 8-inch touchscreen appears on the LE Plus, and higher trims add more tech and entertainment features. Wireless CarPlay, Android Auto, and OTA capability are not mentioned.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 is rated at 20 mpg city, 27 highway, and 23 combined with rear-wheel drive, or 19 city, 26 highway, and 22 combined with all-wheel drive. Real-world testing returned an average of 19 mpg.
Which 2017 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?
The 2017 Toyota Highlander is offered in 5 trim levels: LE, LE Plus, XLE, Limited, and Limited Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The LE gives you the standard safety suite and basic equipment, but it lacks the more desirable convenience features many shoppers expect, and the base 4-cylinder is not the engine you want.
- Sweet-spot trim: The LE Plus is the best value starting point because it adds tri-zone climate control, an 8-inch touchscreen, a power driver’s seat, and a power liftgate.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited and Limited Platinum bring the luxury and tech upgrades, including leather, heated and ventilated front seats, a JBL sound system, second-row captain’s chairs, a panoramic sunroof, and parking sensors.
- Off-road trim: The Highlander is not a true off-road vehicle, so there is no trim here that meaningfully changes that for typical daily driving.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the core driver-assistance package.

If you find a listing below $19,633.61, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Toyota Highlander's resale value?
The current average of $20,472 sits slightly below last year's $21,080.
That price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy at a more favorable point if you plan to keep the vehicle for several years. For a future seller, the softer trend means you should expect some depreciation pressure in the near term rather than a quick rebound. Even so, strong owner satisfaction can help support demand when it is time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander safe?
The Highlander earns top marks from both IIHS and NHTSA, with an Acceptable IIHS headlight result and five-star overall NHTSA rating, plus four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover tests.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard, and it includes adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning and auto braking, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams. That standard equipment is a major strength, especially because it gives even lower trims a meaningful safety advantage. The main caveat is the IIHS headlight result, which is not as strong as the rest of the crash performance.
Should I buy a 2017 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.89% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The updated V6, 8-speed automatic, and standard Toyota Safety Sense make this year feel especially well-rounded.
The bottom line: If you want a used three-row SUV with strong owner satisfaction, standard safety tech, and a market that still offers some negotiating room, the 2017 Highlander is the primary year to target. If your priority is simply finding the lowest possible price, you may want to compare nearby model years and focus on the best-maintained example rather than the newest badge.
