You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection from a trusted mechanic. Should I buy a 2017 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 32.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 59.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.27% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $24,022, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $27,088 average.
• It adds useful upgrades like navigation and higher towing capacity.

The bottom line: You should start with the 2017 if you want the stronger current-market balance of price, satisfaction, and availability. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2016 is the better value path, especially if its added practical upgrades matter to you.
