CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Subaru Legacy

Summary
With 622 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,084, 28.6% of 2017 Subaru Legacies for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Subaru Legacy 5 / 5 stars.
57.7% of 2017 Legacy models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Subaru Legacy stands out as a midsize sedan that makes all-wheel drive part of the formula rather than an upgrade. It also benefits from Subaru’s EyeSight safety suite being standard on all models, and it comes with adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane keep assist. For buyers who want a sedan with a strong safety focus and a more secure feel in poor weather, that combination is a major part of its appeal.
It also offers a useful mix of technology and everyday comfort. The 2017 Legacy includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the available 11.6-inch infotainment screen gives the cabin a more modern feel. Standard equipment is generous, with features such as LED headlights with automatic high beams, remote keyless entry, auto stop/start, and dual seven-inch center touchscreens. The cabin is described as more spacious, with a quieter interior and better ride quality, which helps the car feel refined rather than flashy.
There are tradeoffs, though. The Legacy’s styling is described as dull, the interior feels cheap, and performance is sluggish. Even so, its standard AWD, comfort, and safety equipment make it a practical choice for shoppers who value substance over excitement.

For the year, the car has a great amount of modern features. Drives great in the snow, is comfortable with plenty of room, driver assistance features all worked as they should. The only thing missing is Apple CarPlay/android auto. You simply cannot compare anything to the Legacy. Maybe a BMW 5 Series. In terms of value - the legacy wins every time.

The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with praise centered on all-wheel drive, fuel efficiency, and high safety ratings. That kind of response suggests the car has earned trust over time rather than just making a good first impression. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the model’s appeal and more about finding one that has been maintained well and hasn’t accumulated hidden wear.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru Legacy?
At 58% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage or repeated claims. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on overall condition, signs of past repairs, and whether the car’s comfort and technology features still work as expected.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru Legacy?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 28.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 622 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.77% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,270, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru Legacy's resale value?
The current average of $13,090 sits slightly below last year's $13,462.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already moved through some of its depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. If you choose a clean, well-kept example, you may have a better chance of holding value than you would with a car that has accident history or visible wear. Demand should remain supported by the model’s strong owner satisfaction and practical all-weather appeal.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Legacy or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 28.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.77% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
The 2017 is a strong choice if you want standard all-wheel drive, a safety-first setup, and high owner satisfaction in a midsize sedan. If your priority is getting the best value, this year deserves a close look, especially when you find a clean example priced near the lower end of the market. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may also want to compare nearby model years to see whether a lower-priced alternative offers similar equipment and condition.
