It fits especially well if you want a sedan or hatchback with standard all-wheel drive, and the overview frames it as a practical, affordable, and safe choice. The expert notes also point to strong value, useful tech, and a car that should appeal to both longtime Subaru fans and first-time owners.

Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza reliable?

The expert notes describe it as practical, affordable, and safe, with a powertrain tuned more for commuting than excitement. They also point to a CVT that had earlier shifting quirks in past Subaru models, while saying that issue seems to have been resolved for 2017.

The ownership picture looks reassuring for used buyers, but you should still pay close attention to maintenance history and how the car has aged in daily use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru Impreza?

At 58.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s safety and convenience features work as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: In 2.0i trim, the car starts with a 5-speed stick shift, cloth seats, a 4-speaker sound system, and manual climate control. Premium adds an automatic transmission, while Limited can be ordered with leather, a moonroof, and upgraded infotainment.
• Powertrain: The only engine choice is Subaru’s 2-liter, 152-hp, 4-cylinder boxer engine, paired with a continuously variable transmission. The Sport trim adds torque vectoring and offers an optional stick shift.
• Safety package: EyeSight uses two color cameras mounted on the windshield and can alert you if you stray from your lane, automatically brake in an emergency, and adjust cruise control to follow traffic. On Premium, it adds blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights.
• Infotainment: Every 2017 Impreza comes standard with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and the touchscreen gives you access to music, podcasts, and navigation.
• Fuel efficiency: The car gets as good as 38 mpg highway and 28 city.

Which 2017 Subaru Impreza trim should I buy?

The 2017 Subaru Impreza is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.0i, Premium, Sport, Limited.

Here's the short version:

• 2.0i: This is the entry point, and it gives you the basics plus standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Impreza’s standard all-wheel-drive formula.
• Premium: This is the best-value trim because it adds an automatic transmission and can be paired with EyeSight, blind-spot detection, and steering-responsive fog lights. If you want the strongest mix of convenience and safety, this is the one to target.
• Sport: Choose this if you want the most engaging version in the lineup, since it adds torque vectoring and offers an optional stick shift.
• Limited: This is the most upscale choice, with available leather, a moonroof, and upgraded infotainment for buyers who want more comfort and convenience.

EyeSight is available on Premium, and it brings blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights with it.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru Impreza?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.

• Deal availability: 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 871 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.41% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 58.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,991, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Subaru Impreza's resale value?

The current average of $12,686 sits slightly above last year's $12,510.

That modest increase suggests the market has held up reasonably well for this model year. If you buy now and keep the car in good condition, you’re starting from a price point that has already shown some stability.

For a future seller, that kind of steady pricing can help reduce the risk of a sharp drop in value. Strong demand for practical, all-wheel-drive cars can also support resale if the car remains clean and well maintained.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza safe?

The 2017 Subaru Impreza earns a Top Safety Pick Plus rating from IIHS and a five-star safety rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it uses two windshield-mounted cameras to provide lane-departure alerts, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. On Premium, it also adds blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights.

One caveat is that the adaptive cruise behavior has an odd flaw: if the car stays stopped for more than 3 seconds, the system turns off and the car can start to roll forward.

Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Impreza or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 58.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.41% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It is described as all-new, practical, affordable, and safe, with standard all-wheel drive and affordable tech.

The bottom line: If you want a used compact car with standard all-wheel drive, strong safety credentials, and useful tech, the 2017 is the primary year to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can still shop the market carefully and focus on the cleanest, best-priced listings rather than stretching for a newer example.
