Why it stands out
With standard all-wheel drive and affordable tech, the 2017 Subaru Impreza stands out as a sensible choice in a segment where all-wheel drive sedans and hatchbacks are relatively uncommon. It is also described as affordable, safe, and practical, which gives it broad appeal for buyers who want everyday usefulness without moving to a crossover.
The 2017 Subaru Impreza is presented as one of the few options for shoppers who want a sedan or hatchback with all-wheel drive. It is also noted as not being as refined as it could be, so its strengths are more about value, practicality, and confidence than luxury or polish.

My wife and I were both civic owners for 13+ years each. She got a Crosstrek a few years back, which has been really good to us so far. So when my civic started overstaying its welcome I decided to include subaru in my search. Also test drove a honda civic and toyota corolla. While the Subaru doest exactly have the most potent acceleration- slowest of this group - it is the most fun to drive, in my opinion. The sport trim has a differently-tuned suspension and a tighter steering ratio. Combine these features with the all wheel drive and what you get is a car that you just want to drive. Subaru also got their act together with the interior. The visibility on the subaru is great (corolla is good too). However, the civics rear visibility was lacking because of the cars aggressively sloped rear end. Plus, the subaru just feels way more solidly built than the corolla or civic.

Its hard to see the oil pressure and the engine status of the car. This may be obvious to the car computer. But this is a user experience.

Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2017 Impreza is described as practical and confidence-inspiring, with standard all-wheel drive and a design aimed at everyday usefulness. Its powertrain is tuned more for commuting than excitement, and the expert evaluation notes that the engine can feel underpowered on highway on-ramps and uphill stretches. Even so, the car’s straightforward mechanical setup and value-oriented design support a reputation for dependable daily use.
The cost-effectiveness notes also point to affordable active safety and useful standard tech, which can help reduce ownership stress. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a neglected example may feel tired or underpowered sooner than you’d like, so condition and maintenance history matter.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru Impreza?
At 57.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on cars with lower prices or incomplete records. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s safety and driver-assistance features work as expected. Because this model is valued for practicality and confidence, a clean, well-kept example matters more than cosmetic extras.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 2.0i is sparse, with cloth seats, a 4-speaker sound system, manual climate control, and a 5-speed stick shift, while Premium adds an automatic transmission and Limited can bring leather, a moonroof, and upgraded infotainment. If you want the best value, the Premium is the trim that most clearly adds everyday convenience without pushing too far upmarket.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses Subaru’s 2-liter, 152-hp, 4-cylinder boxer engine with a CVT, and the Sport adds torque vectoring plus an optional stick shift. The engine is efficient enough to return as much as 38 mpg highway and 28 city, but it is not turbocharged and can feel strained at higher speeds.
- Safety package: EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it can alert you to lane departure, automatically brake in an emergency, and adjust cruise control to follow traffic. On Premium, it adds blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights, so check whether a lower-trim car has the safety equipment you want.
- Infotainment: Every 2017 Impreza comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and the top Limited trim can be ordered with upgraded infotainment. That makes even the base car unusually well equipped for phone integration.
- Fuel efficiency: The CVT helps the Impreza achieve up to 38 mpg highway and 28 city.
Which 2017 Subaru Impreza trim should I buy?
The 2017 Subaru Impreza is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.0i, Premium, Sport, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- 2.0i: This is the simplest way into the Impreza, and it gives you the core appeal of the car: standard all-wheel drive, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the practical basics. Choose it if you want the lowest-cost path to the model’s main strengths and do not need extra comfort features.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds an automatic transmission and can be paired with EyeSight, blind-spot detection, and steering-responsive fog lights. If you want a more complete daily driver without jumping to the top trim, this is the one to target.
- Sport: This trim adds torque vectoring and an optional stick shift, so it is the pick if you want the most engaging version of the standard lineup. It makes the most sense if you care more about driving feel than luxury features.
- Limited: This is the most upscale version, with available leather, a moonroof, and upgraded infotainment. Buy this if you want the most comfort and convenience equipment in the lineup.
EyeSight is available on Premium, and that trim-level safety step is worth prioritizing if driver assistance matters to you.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru Impreza?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 859 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.74% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 57.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,997.83, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru Impreza's resale value?
The current average of $12,249 sits slightly below last year's $12,859.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. Because the market is still active and the car has broad appeal as an affordable all-wheel-drive compact, a clean example should remain easier to move than a neglected one. The strongest resale prospects will likely belong to cars with desirable equipment and clear maintenance records.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza safe?
It’s a Top Safety Pick Plus from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives it a top five-star safety rating.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The Impreza’s EyeSight suite uses two windshield-mounted cameras and can warn you about lane departure, apply the brakes in an emergency, and adjust cruise control to follow traffic. On Premium, it also brings blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights. One caveat is that the automatic cruise control behavior can shut off after a stop and let the car roll forward if you do not stay on the brake, so you should test that system carefully on any used example.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Impreza or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.74% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 stands out as one of the few sedan or hatchback choices with standard all-wheel drive, plus affordable tech and strong safety credentials.
The bottom line: If you want a used compact car with standard all-wheel drive, useful tech, and a value-first personality, the 2017 is the year to focus on. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can still shop nearby years, but the 2017’s combination of softened pricing, broad appeal, and strong safety makes it the cleaner target for most buyers.
