CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Nissan Sentra

Summary
With 958 currently listed for sale and an average price of $9,166.00, 25.4% of 2017 Nissan Sentras for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Nissan Sentra 5 / 5 stars.
51.0% of 2017 Sentra models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Nissan Sentra stands out as a practical compact sedan with a stronger emphasis on efficiency and everyday usability than on outright performance. In its seventh generation, the Sentra was described as more practical than before, with a more spacious interior and a more fuel-efficient powertrain. It was also 150 pounds lighter than the outgoing model, which helped reinforce its easygoing, commuter-friendly character.
For 2017, Nissan also gave the Sentra a performance-oriented side through the Sentra SR Turbo and the Sentra Nismo. The SR Turbo used a 188-horsepower turbocharged 1.6-liter engine with sporty tuning for the suspension, steering, and brakes, while the Nismo added the same turbocharged engine along with a stiffened chassis, a sports interior with grippy seating surfaces, and the choice of a six-speed manual or a CVT. That combination made the 2017 Sentra unusual in a segment where many buyers were focused mainly on value and efficiency.
At the same time, the 2017 Sentra still had some limitations that buyers should keep in mind. The broader seventh-generation lineup was known for its CVT-related complaints, and the model’s appeal was strongest when viewed as a comfortable, efficient compact car rather than a class leader in excitement. Even so, its mix of practicality, available performance trims, and strong fuel economy made it a distinctive choice for shoppers who wanted a sensible sedan with a little extra personality.

Was my first car purchase. Everything I could want in a compact sedan for myself. Only got rid out if because the transmission blew out. Wouldnt get another due to Nissan specifically CVT Transmissions.

This car is very nice and amazing for a single person needing it for personal use. The gas mileage is great, if youre not planning to drive to many places other than work or the store. Highly recommend this car if you find one in good condition.

2017 Nissan Sentra Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2017 Nissan Sentra prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2017 Nissan Sentra cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $9,197 |
| Year-Round Low | $8,934.75 |
| Year-Round High | $9,658.41 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $9,659 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.78% |
Prices have softened 4.78% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 967 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $8,934.75, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Nissan Sentra a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Nissan Sentra earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, efficiency, and great gas mileage, and many also like its smooth driving experience and appealing styling. For you, that makes it a sensible choice if you want a practical compact sedan for commuting and everyday use rather than a car built around excitement.
With 24.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Nissan Sentra reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also highlights it as reliable, dependable, and efficient, with many drivers describing it as a car they can count on for everyday use. That said, some owners mention CVT-related concerns, so used buyers should pay close attention to transmission condition and service history.
For long-term ownership, your biggest risk is buying a car that has been poorly maintained or already showing transmission wear.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Nissan Sentra?
At 51% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. After that, make the inspection focus on overall condition, especially signs of uneven wear, poor repairs, or anything that suggests the car has been used harder than average.
Because this model has known CVT-related complaints, a careful test drive and maintenance review should be a priority before you commit.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Nissan Sentra?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 24.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 967 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.78% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 51.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $8,934.75, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Nissan Sentra's resale value?
The current average of $9,197 sits slightly below last year's $9,659.
That tells you the market has softened, which can work against you if you're planning to sell soon. If you buy at the right price, though, the lower entry point can help protect your future resale position.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Nissan Sentra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 24.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 51% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.78% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $7,936, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $9,197 average.
- It offers refreshed styling and updated interior features.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2017 if you want the stronger overall market balance of owner satisfaction, current pricing context, and available inventory. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the better value-focused alternative, especially if its refreshed styling and cabin updates matter to you.
