CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Nissan Maxima

Summary
With 49 currently listed for sale near Los Angeles, CA and an average price of $13,211.00, 24.5% of 2017 Nissan Maximas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Nissan Maxima 4.45 / 5 stars.
71.4% of 2017 Maxima models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Nissan Maxima stands out as a stylish, sporty take on the large sedan formula. Nissan revived its “Four-door sports car” label for this generation, and the car backs up that image with sleek styling, capable handling, and a 3.5-liter V6 rated at 300 horsepower and 261 pound-feet of torque. It also uses the less expensive Altima’s platform, which helps explain why it feels more like a performance-oriented midsize sedan than a traditional full-size cruiser. Even so, it remains a relaxed driver overall rather than an especially thrilling one.
What makes the 2017 model especially appealing is how much equipment it brings. An 8-inch color display with navigation is standard across the range, and the Maxima also includes a long list of safety and driver-assistance features. For this model year, Apple CarPlay is standard, along with forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking. Buyers also get the benefit of the Maxima’s strong safety record, since it earned “Top Safety Pick” or “Top Safety Pick+” designations from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety every year it was on sale.
There are a few tradeoffs to keep in mind. The continuously variable transmission blunts some of the car’s responses, and the Maxima is not especially spacious for its class. It is also smaller than some larger sedans, and its back seat and trunk are not its strongest points. Still, for shoppers who want a well-equipped sedan with a premium feel, strong standard safety content, and a V6 that delivers real punch, the 2017 Nissan Maxima has a distinctive appeal.

My 2017 Nissan Maxima SL is the perfect car for me. Coming from a 2008 Infiniti G37 coupe, I still wanted a vehicle that would accommodate both the sports car and practicality. The features are very similar to my G37 but with some update safety and convenience features. My kids love the panoramic sunroof and I love the performance, while my wife loves the extra space. Though I had a look at all the trim levels, the SL got me the best value. The one thing I would say that I would love to experience would be AWD. Other that I love my “new” car!

Is the 2017 Nissan Maxima a good car?
Generally — the 4.45/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the stylish design, the blend of luxury and sportiness, and the impressive performance, while also noting the smooth ride and ample features.
That lines up well with the model’s use case as a well-equipped sedan with a premium feel, strong standard safety content, and a V6 that delivers real punch. For you, that means the Maxima makes the most sense if you want a sporty-leaning large sedan rather than a traditional full-size cruiser.
With 23.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Nissan Maxima reliable?
Owners rate it 4.45/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a car that feels dependable and trouble-free enough for many shoppers to recommend, with praise centered on the smooth ride, strong features, and enjoyable driving experience. That kind of feedback suggests the Maxima can be a confident used-car choice if you prioritize a satisfying ownership experience.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that condition and maintenance history matter a lot, so a clean, well-kept example is the safer bet.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Nissan Maxima?
At 48.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection on any car that looks promising. Focus closely on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s current wear matches its mileage and asking price.
Because the Maxima is a style-and-features buy, you should be especially careful that the exterior, interior, and overall condition justify the listing price.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Nissan Maxima?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 23.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 798 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.15% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 48.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,976.14, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Nissan Maxima's resale value?
The current average of $12,961 sits slightly below last year's $14,588.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, that also means resale value will depend heavily on how well your car is maintained and how clean its history is when it comes time to list it.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.45/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Nissan Maxima or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 23.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 48.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.15% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.45/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,437, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $12,961 average.
- Styling is the main draw, and buyers who like it tend to like the whole package.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around value proposition, the 2017 is the better primary target because it combines a lower current average price with solid owner satisfaction and meaningful deal availability. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the better secondary path, especially if you find one in cleaner condition and with a history report that checks out.
