CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class
overall

Summary
With 1,901 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,615, 32.2% of 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
55.1% of 2017 C-Class models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class stands out as a compact luxury sedan that delivers a near-perfect blend of comfort, performance, price, and snob appeal. It is also notable for being the best-selling Mercedes-Benz in the U.S., with more than 70,000 Americans taking one home in 2016. That combination helps explain why it remains such a compelling choice for buyers who want a premium badge without giving up everyday livability.
For 2017, the formula is essentially more of the same, which is a strength here rather than a weakness. The car’s appeal comes from its balanced character: it is stylish, luxurious, and responsive, while still feeling comfortable to drive. The main tradeoffs are practical ones, since some owners report that maintenance costs can be high and taller passengers may find the cabin a bit cramped.

This is a great car. It’s got the right engine and specs needed for the C-Class sedan compared to the C300 model.

Reviewed a 2017 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 S Coupe on Apr 11, 2023
The c63s is one of the best cars Ive ever driven. The steering, throttle response and brakes are all amazing. The suspension is extremely rough, even compared to cars like the F-type. However the driving experience makes the bumpy ride worth it. It has a great interior with a good sized trunk. The back seats are small, but much larger than a LC500. If youre in the market for a fast and fun car definitely pick one up. Its an amazing car with an amazing hand-built V8 that will last. Id definitely take a C63 coupe over a F-type, DB11, Hellcat, M4, M8, Gt350 and almost every car in the segment. (Below the Lc500 though) Overall a great car you should pick up if its in your budget.

The Mercedes Benz C Coupe sets itself aside from its sedan version. In fact, despite having the same nameplate, and badging, it is an entirely different car. Kudos to the sedan, no doubt, but the Coupe just epitomizes the right balance between pure luxury and pure sport. It is pleasant to find how well it does both in equal parts. Beautifully styled inside and out, it offers upgrades as standard that are options with the sedan. Drives enthusiastically, precisely, and comfortably. This model year is where the depreciation has its full effect and is quite affordable. It puts a smile on my face just by gazing at it, let alone what it does when I get behind the wheel.

Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its powerful performance, stylish design, and luxurious features, and many also call out its comfort and responsiveness behind the wheel. That lines up with the overview: you’re looking at a compact luxury sedan that aims to balance comfort, performance, price, and premium appeal. The market also shows 33.0% good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class reliable?

The user feedback points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with drivers repeatedly highlighting its comfort, performance, and luxury features. The expert road test also describes it as a well-rounded sedan that does many things right, and the ownership notes mention that it can be expensive to maintain. If you’re buying used, the main long-term risk is that repair and upkeep costs can add up, so a clean service history matters.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class?
At 55.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had any prior damage or incomplete service records. Pay close attention to signs of uneven wear, electrical quirks, and any evidence of deferred maintenance, since luxury-car upkeep can be costly if the previous owner cut corners. A careful test drive should also focus on ride quality, braking feel, and whether all comfort and tech features work as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The cabin emphasizes premium materials, a high-end design, and a strong luxury feel, while the standard setup includes a 7-inch central screen and basic connectivity. Higher equipment levels add a larger screen, navigation, and more advanced convenience features, so base cars are the ones most likely to feel light on tech.
- Powertrain: The main setup is a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 7-speed automatic and rear- or all-wheel drive. The expert notes say the car is quick enough for everyday use and especially enjoyable on curvy roads, but not as satisfying as the older V6 setup.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-collision alert with auto-braking, Pre-Safe, rear side thorax-level airbags, stability control that can help counter crosswinds, and an attention monitor. Optional features include blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alerts, and Pre-Safe Plus.
- Infotainment: The standard setup uses a 7-inch central screen with Bluetooth, HD Radio, and two USB ports. An 8.4-inch screen is tied to the Premium 3 package and adds navigation, map updates, SiriusXM traffic and weather data, voice recognition, and an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert test drive recorded a calculated 23 mpg over 620 miles, and the EPA rates the rear-wheel-drive model at 34 highway mpg while the all-wheel-drive version is rated at 24 city and 31 highway.
Which 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class trim should I buy?
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is offered in 1 trim level: C300.
Here's the short version:
The C300 is the trim to focus on because it’s the core model and the one most dealers stock. It gives you the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, the balanced chassis, and the luxury feel that define this C-Class, while still leaving room to add desirable options if you want more tech or convenience. If you want the best value, this is the trim to target first, then shop carefully for the right equipment package.
The safety package is strong even at the standard level, with forward-collision alert and auto-braking, Pre-Safe, and rear side thorax-level airbags included.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and deal activity to reward careful shopping.
- Deal availability: 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,886 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.21% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,254, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class's resale value?
The current average of $17,640 sits slightly below last year's $18,610.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you as a buyer now but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price and keep the car well maintained, you can reduce the hit from depreciation. Strong condition, clean history, and desirable equipment should matter more when it’s time to sell than simply having the badge on the trunk.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class safe?
The 2017 C-Class has a five-star rating by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and top ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which tested a 2016 model and gave it the Top Safety Pick+ award.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes rear side thorax-level airbags, stability control that can help counter crosswinds, an attention monitor, forward-collision alert with auto-braking, and Pre-Safe, which prepares the cabin for an imminent crash. Optional driver-assistance features include blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alerts, and Pre-Safe Plus. The main caveat is that some of the more advanced safety tech is optional rather than standard.
Should I buy a 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.21% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- More of the same is the point here: the expert summary says the 2017 C-Class continues the model’s near-perfect blend of comfort, performance, price, and snob appeal.
The bottom line: The 2017 C-Class makes sense if you want the classic compact Mercedes formula and you’re shopping for value in a used luxury sedan. If you’re especially price-sensitive, this year’s softer pricing and decent deal availability make it worth a close look; if you want newer tech and a more modern cabin, a later model year may be the better path.
