What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mazda MAZDA3?

At 54.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or multiple owners. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the car’s features and safety equipment are working as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Sport is well equipped with daytime running lights, tire pressure monitoring, dynamic stability control, traction control, air conditioning, remote keyless entry, cruise control, and Mazda Connect, while Touring adds heated side mirrors, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, leatherette sport seats, rain-sensing wipers, Smart City Brake Support, and advanced blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder Skyactiv-G with 155 hp and 150 lb-ft in the lower trims, while the Grand Touring uses a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder Skyactiv-G with 184 hp and 185 lb-ft; both engines are paired with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic, and the smaller engine returns up to 28/37 mpg while the larger one is rated as high as 27/36 mpg.
• Safety package: Touring and Grand Touring trims add advanced blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and Smart City Brake Support, Mazda's version of automatic emergency braking.
• Infotainment: The system uses a 7-inch full-color touchscreen, includes Bluetooth, Mazda Connect, SiriusXM with a 4-month trial, voice command, AM/FM/HD Radio, SMS audio delivery and reply, and does not offer Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.
• Fuel efficiency: EPA-estimated fuel economy ranges from 25 mpg to 37 mpg, and the tested Grand Touring automatic averaged 32 mpg during the test period.

Which 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?

The 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and still want a well-equipped car with the core Mazda3 experience, including the 7-inch touchscreen, cruise control, and the full set of basic safety systems.
• Touring: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the comfort and safety upgrades that make daily driving easier, including heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, rain-sensing wipers, Smart City Brake Support, and advanced blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
• Grand Touring: Choose this if you want the strongest engine, the most upscale cabin, and the richest feature set, including the 2.5-liter engine, Bose audio, SiriusXM, a full-color active driving display, LED fog lights, and a power moonroof.

The safety-package upgrades on Touring and Grand Touring are the key trim-level step up if you want the most confidence-inspiring setup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mazda MAZDA3?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market: there are deals to be found, but you should still compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 693 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 2.89% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 54.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,910, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?

The current average of $13,262 sits slightly above last year's $12,890.

That upward move suggests the market still sees value in this model year, which can help support resale if you buy well and keep the car in good condition. The relatively modest year-over-year increase also points to a stable pricing pattern rather than a sharp swing.

If you plan to sell later, a clean history and strong maintenance records should matter a lot. Cars that stay desirable in the used market tend to reward owners who preserve condition and avoid deferred maintenance.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?

The 2017 Mazda3 has not been fully rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It has so far received five-star ratings in side crash testing and four-star ratings in rollover testing, and it has yet to be tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety features include multiple airbags, antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, hill launch assist, dynamic stability control, traction control, and a reversing camera. Touring and Grand Touring trims add advanced blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Smart City Brake Support, Mazda's version of automatic emergency braking.

That means the safety story is strongest once you move beyond the base trim. If safety equipment is a priority, the higher trims are the ones to focus on.

Should I buy a 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 54.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 2.89% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 update adds fresh styling, G-Vectoring Control, and a more polished feel than the prior year.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $11,986, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $13,262 average.
• It emphasizes engaging driving feel without making the ride harsh.

The bottom line: If you want the better-rounded choice, the 2017 is the stronger pick because it adds meaningful updates and still sits in a reasonable price range. If your budget is tighter, the 2016 can make sense as a lower-cost alternative, especially if you value the Mazda3’s driving character more than the newest updates.
