Why it stands out
The 2017 Lexus ES stands out as a comfort-first luxury sedan that prioritizes refinement over flash. It is based on the same platform as the Toyota Avalon and Camry from this era, and Lexus gave it increased structural rigidity, a wider stance, and an overall increase in length of almost three inches. The wheelbase grew by two inches, which helped create additional rear-seat legroom, while the seating position was moved lower and further back. Lexus also leaned into a more expressive design with a large spindle grille, sharp body creases, and a coupe-like roofline.
Under the hood, the 2017 Lexus ES offered two distinct personalities. The ES 350 used a 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6 with 302 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The ES 300h hybrid combined a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a CVT for a combined 215 hp. Standard equipment was generous, including synthetic leather upholstery, heated power front seats, LED headlights, a power moonroof, and a full suite of safety features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning with steering assist, lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, traffic-sign recognition, and high-beam assist.
What makes this ES appealing is how thoroughly it delivers on the traditional Lexus formula: a quiet, pampering ride, a well-finished cabin, and strong everyday comfort. The available trims and options added meaningful luxury touches such as a Mark Levinson stereo, a head-up display, a panoramic glass roof, surround-view cameras, a power rear sunshade, and triple-beam LED headlights. At the same time, it is not the right choice for buyers seeking excitement, since its character is more relaxed than sporty. Early models also used an infotainment system that reviewers found complex and awkward to use, though Lexus later improved the interior experience with a major refresh for 2022.

Very well appointed with lots of leg and arm room compared to our 2010 ES 350. The only thing I really dont care for is the analog clock. It reminds me a lot of my old Mercury Milan. Overall, this car is an excellent value.

Drivers describe it as reliable and praise its build quality, along with the kind of comfort and refinement that tends to hold up well over time. The feedback also points to a dependable ownership experience rather than a high-drama one. For used buyers, that usually means lower long-term worry if you choose a well-kept example and verify its history carefully.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Lexus ES?
At 49.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection from a trusted mechanic. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the cabin and electronics match the car’s premium positioning. If a listing looks unusually clean or unusually cheap, make sure the paperwork and inspection back it up.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Lexus ES?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 650 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 2.98% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 49.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,367, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Lexus ES's resale value?
The current average of $22,096 sits slightly above last year's $21,456.
That kind of price movement suggests the market still sees value in this model year, which can help support resale strength if you buy well and keep the car in good condition. The fact that prices are holding above last year’s level also signals steady buyer interest rather than a softening market. For a future seller, that usually means a cleaner, well-documented example should remain easier to move.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Lexus ES or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 49.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 2.98% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $19,798, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $22,096 average.
- It offers a value-focused, quiet luxury experience.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger overall market signal and higher owner satisfaction, the 2017 is the better primary target. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the sensible secondary path, especially if you want a calm, comfort-oriented luxury sedan without stretching your budget.
