CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Kia Soul
overall

Summary
With 1,216 currently listed for sale and an average price of $9,197, 27.9% of 2017 Kia Souls for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Kia Soul 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.33 / 10.
53.4% of 2017 Soul models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Kia Soul corners the market on boxy hatchbacks, and that shape remains its defining trait. It is still the quirkiest option in its price range, which gives it a clear personality that helps it stand out from more conventional small cars. The 2017 Kia Soul also returns with an optional turbocharged engine, updated looks, and new technology, giving buyers a little more to consider beyond its distinctive styling.
At the same time, the 2017 Kia Soul is described as decidedly average when it comes to performance and features. It stands out for its looks, but not for its value, so its appeal is less about being the most compelling all-around bargain and more about offering a memorable design with some added equipment. Owner feedback reinforces that balance, with praise for its value, fuel economy, comfortable ride, spacious interior, and modern features, alongside complaints about missing armrests and a media interface that could be better.

Lean, mean Kia machine! Shutting my drivers side door for the first time, I could tell the quality of this vehicle! Solid. Stable. Just drove her through a horrible blizzard and she performed like an SUV. I feel safe and sporty behind the wheel -- shes got ZIP! Im 51 and with the telescoping steering wheel plus seat controls, I fit perfectly. The back-up camera and audio features are a marvel. I bought the right vehicle for me!

Sporty but not dodgy , responsive but not twitchy, great on gas mileage but does a decent job of taming the road without too much noise. The creature comfort level is higher than anticipated. I do wish the media interface was better, but it is a 2017.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright complexity and more about finding a well-kept example with the equipment and condition you want.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Kia Soul?
At 53.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s equipment works as expected, since this model’s appeal depends heavily on its features and overall presentation. It is also worth checking that the cabin and infotainment system feel complete and functional, because owner feedback mentions some usability complaints.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base version comes with a manual transmission and a 1.6-liter, 130-hp 4-cylinder engine, while the Soul + adds a 2-liter, 161-hp 4-cylinder engine and automatic transmission. The higher trim also unlocks more equipment, and the review notes that the optional leather-trimmed seats are supportive and comfortable on long drives.
- Powertrain: You get a 1.6-liter, 130-hp 4-cylinder on the base version, a 2-liter, 161-hp 4-cylinder on the Soul +, and a turbocharged version of the entry-level engine in the ! trim with 201 horsepower. The turbo adds stronger passing and merging ability, but the review also says the car still does not feel sporty.
- Safety package: The Soul lacks automatic emergency braking, which keeps it from earning top IIHS honors. A reversing camera, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning are optional, but semi-autonomous features like active cruise control and active lane assist are not available.
- Infotainment: An optional touchscreen adds Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and the Uvo package also brings Kia’s telematics system. That setup can remember where you parked, tell you if the car needs service, and let you schedule service from the dashboard.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert review describes the Soul’s fuel economy as miserable, and the owner feedback still calls out good fuel economy as a plus. That contrast makes it especially important to verify that the specific car you are considering matches your expectations for efficiency.
Which 2017 Kia Soul trim should I buy?
The 2017 Kia Soul is offered in 3 trim levels: Soul, Soul +, and !.
Here's the short version:
- Soul: This is the least expensive way into the model, but it is also the most basic. You get the 1.6-liter engine and manual transmission, and the review suggests the automatic is only a modest upgrade if you want easier daily driving.
- Soul +: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it adds the stronger 2-liter engine and automatic transmission, and it is the trim that unlocks the optional Uvo package with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Kia’s telematics features.
- !: This is the most powerful version, with the turbocharged 201-hp engine. It is the right pick if you want the strongest acceleration in the lineup, but the review makes clear that the Soul still is not a sporty car.
The safety content also notes that a reversing camera, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning are optional, while automatic emergency braking is not available.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Soul?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,162 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.61% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 53.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,132, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Kia Soul's resale value?
The current average of $9,144 sits slightly below last year's $9,389.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. The current market also shows a fairly tight year-round range, so condition and equipment will matter a lot when it comes time to resell. Strong owner satisfaction can help keep demand steady, especially for shoppers who want the Soul’s distinctive styling and practical cabin.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Kia Soul safe?
The 2017 Kia Soul earns a Top Safety Pick-level result from the IIHS and five-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with five-star ratings for head-on and side-impact collisions and four-star ratings on the rollover test.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The Soul’s safety story is mixed: crash performance is strong, but active safety is limited. The review says a reversing camera is optional, as are lane-departure and forward-collision warning systems, but automatic emergency braking is not available. That missing feature is the main reason it falls short of the IIHS’s highest recognition. If safety is a top priority, you should pay close attention to whether a specific listing includes the available driver-assistance equipment.
Should I buy a 2017 Kia Soul or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 53.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.61% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 model adds an optional turbocharged engine, updated looks, and new technology.
The bottom line: If you want the Soul’s quirky styling and a version with updated tech, the 2017 is a sensible place to shop. If your priority is maximizing value or finding a broader set of features for the money, you may also want to compare nearby years and focus on the best-equipped, best-priced example rather than the newest one you can afford.
