Is the 2017 Kia Soul a good car?

Is the 2017 Kia Soul reliable?

Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with praise for the Soul’s good fuel economy, comfortable ride, and spacious interior. The expert review also describes it as a practical car that does its job well, and the tech package adds convenience features that can make day-to-day use easier. If you’re buying used, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about finding one that has been maintained well and still feels fresh inside.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Kia Soul?

At 52.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, interior condition, and any signs of prior repair work. Because this model’s appeal depends heavily on comfort, features, and personality, you’ll want to make sure the cabin, electronics, and trim pieces still feel intact and well cared for. A test drive should also confirm that the ride feels composed and that the controls and media interface work the way you expect.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base version comes with a manual transmission and a 1.6-liter, 130-hp 4-cylinder engine, while the Soul Plus adds a 2-liter, 161-hp 4-cylinder engine and an automatic transmission. The Exclaim is the most powerful version, with a turbocharged engine and 201 horsepower, and it’s the one that best suits buyers who want the strongest acceleration and the most upscale feel.
• Powertrain: You get a 1.6-liter, 130-hp 4-cylinder in the base model, a 2-liter, 161-hp 4-cylinder in the Plus, and a turbocharged version of the entry-level engine in the Exclaim with 201 horsepower. The review notes that the turbo adds useful passing power, but the Soul still isn’t meant to feel sporty.
• Safety package: A reversing camera is optional, as are lane-departure warning and forward-collision warning systems. The review also notes that automatic emergency braking is not available, which is an important gap to keep in mind if safety tech matters to you.
• Infotainment: An optional touchscreen adds Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and the Uvo package also brings Kia’s telematics system. That setup can remember where you parked, tell you if the car needs service, and let you schedule service from the dashboard.
• Fuel efficiency: Owner feedback highlights good fuel economy, and the expert review also points to the Soul’s efficiency as a strength.

Which 2017 Kia Soul trim should I buy?

The 2017 Kia Soul is offered in 3 trim levels: base, Plus, and Exclaim.

Here's the short version:

• base: This is the least expensive way into the Soul, but it’s also the most stripped-down version, with a manual transmission and the 1.6-liter, 130-hp engine. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and don’t mind giving up the extra convenience and power found higher up.
• Plus: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the 2-liter, 161-hp engine and an automatic transmission, and it unlocks the optional tech package. If you want the most balanced mix of everyday usability and available features, this is the trim to target.
• Exclaim: This is the most powerful Soul, with the turbocharged engine and 201 horsepower. Choose it if you want the strongest acceleration and are willing to pay more for the top-end version.

The safety content notes that the Soul lacks automatic emergency braking, and that it does not earn the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ badge.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Soul?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully and compare listings.

• Deal availability: 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,173 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.83% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 52.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $8,820, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Kia Soul's resale value?

The current average of $8,820 sits slightly below last year's $9,467.

That decline suggests the Soul has become more affordable for used buyers, which can make it easier to move later if you price it competitively. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that the market has already adjusted downward, so condition and equipment will matter a lot when it’s time to resell. A well-kept example with desirable features should still attract attention, especially because the model has strong owner satisfaction.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Kia Soul safe?

The 2017 Kia Soul earns Good ratings from the IIHS on all crash tests and five-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with five-star ratings for head-on and side-impact collisions and four-star ratings on the rollover test.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The Soul includes an optional reversing camera, optional lane-departure warning, and optional forward-collision warning. The main safety shortcoming is the lack of automatic emergency braking, which keeps it from earning the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ badge. That means you should pay close attention to which safety features are actually installed on any used example you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2017 Kia Soul or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 52.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.83% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 update brings an optional turbocharged engine, updated looks, and new technology, while still keeping the Soul’s distinctive personality.

The bottom line: If you want the Soul’s quirky styling, strong owner satisfaction, and a lower used price, the 2017 is a sensible target. If you’re shopping mainly on value and want to compare alternatives, you may also want to look at other years or similar small cars that offer stronger safety tech or a better overall value proposition.
