CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Kia Soul
overall

Summary
With 75 currently listed for sale near Los Angeles, CA and an average price of $8,237, 44.0% of 2017 Kia Souls for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Kia Soul 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.33 / 10.
82.7% of 2017 Soul models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Kia Soul corners the market on boxy hatchbacks, and that shape remains its defining trait. It is still the quirkiest option in its price range, which gives it a clear personality that helps it stand out from more conventional small cars. The 2017 Kia Soul also returns with an optional turbocharged engine, updated looks, and new technology, giving buyers a little more to consider beyond its distinctive styling.
At the same time, the 2017 Kia Soul is described as decidedly average when it comes to performance and features. It stands out for its looks, but not for its value, so its appeal is less about being the most compelling all-around bargain and more about offering a memorable design with some added equipment. Owner feedback reinforces that balance, with praise for its value, fuel economy, comfortable ride, spacious interior, and modern features, alongside complaints about missing armrests and a media interface that could be better.

Lean, mean Kia machine! Shutting my drivers side door for the first time, I could tell the quality of this vehicle! Solid. Stable. Just drove her through a horrible blizzard and she performed like an SUV. I feel safe and sporty behind the wheel -- shes got ZIP! Im 51 and with the telescoping steering wheel plus seat controls, I fit perfectly. The back-up camera and audio features are a marvel. I bought the right vehicle for me!

Sporty but not dodgy , responsive but not twitchy, great on gas mileage but does a decent job of taming the road without too much noise. The creature comfort level is higher than anticipated. I do wish the media interface was better, but it is a 2017.

Is the 2017 Kia Soul a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Kia Soul earns a 4.75/5 user rating and a 6.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 8/10.
Owners consistently praise its great value, good fuel economy, comfortable ride, spacious interior, and modern features. That lines up with the Soul’s role as a quirky, practical hatchback that gives you personality and everyday usefulness rather than class-leading performance. The market also shows 29.8% of listings as good or great deals, which supports its appeal if you want a distinctive small car with broad shopper interest.
Is the 2017 Kia Soul reliable?

The expert evaluation also describes it as a practical car that is fine at balancing fun and usefulness, while the tech package adds service reminders and scheduling through Uvo. If you buy used, the main long-term risk is less about the Soul’s personality and more about finding one that has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by age or heavy use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Kia Soul?
At 52.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or shows uneven panel gaps, paint mismatch, or interior wear. Focus on how the car drives, how the electronics work, and whether the cabin features match the listing, since this model’s appeal depends heavily on condition and equipment. A careful test drive matters because the Soul’s value proposition is strongest when the car feels clean, complete, and well kept.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base version comes with a manual transmission and a 1.6-liter, 130-hp 4-cylinder engine, while the Soul Plus adds a 2-liter, 161-hp 4-cylinder engine and an automatic transmission. The higher trim also unlocks more option packages, and the Uvo package is available only for the Plus, so base-trim shoppers should expect fewer tech conveniences.
- Powertrain: You can choose between a 1.6-liter, 130-hp 4-cylinder engine and a 2-liter, 161-hp 4-cylinder engine, plus an optional turbocharged version that raises output to 201 horsepower. The turbo adds more passing and merging punch, but the car still isn’t tuned to feel sporty.
- Safety package: A reversing camera is optional, as are lane-departure warning and forward-collision warning systems. Automatic emergency braking is not available, and that gap keeps the car from earning top honors.
- Infotainment: An optional touchscreen adds Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and the Uvo package also brings Kia’s telematics system. That setup can remember where you parked, tell you if the car needs service, and let you schedule service from the dashboard.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert evaluation describes the fuel economy as miserable, and the user feedback highlights good fuel economy as a strength.
Which 2017 Kia Soul trim should I buy?
The 2017 Kia Soul is offered in 3 trim levels: Soul, Soul +, and !.
Here's the short version:
- Soul: This is the least expensive way in, with a manual transmission and the 1.6-liter, 130-hp engine. It makes sense if you want the Soul’s styling and basic practicality at the lowest price, but it’s the most stripped-down choice and misses the richer tech and convenience upgrades.
- Soul +: This is the best-value trim because it adds the 2-liter, 161-hp engine, an automatic transmission, and access to more option packages. It’s the trim to target if you want the strongest balance of everyday usability and available features.
- !: This is the turbocharged model with 201 horsepower, so it’s the pick if you want the most power. It costs the most, and the extra performance is more about stronger acceleration than turning the Soul into a sporty hatchback.
The safety package still leaves out automatic emergency braking, even on higher trims.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Soul?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,155 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.92% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 52.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,056, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Kia Soul's resale value?
The current average of $9,056 sits slightly below last year's $9,425.
That decline suggests the Soul has softened a bit in the used market, which can work against you if you’re selling soon. On the other hand, the lower entry price may help keep it attractive to budget-minded shoppers, especially because the Soul’s personality and practicality still give it a clear identity. If you maintain yours well and keep the equipment working, you should be in a better position to hold buyer interest than a neglected example.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Kia Soul safe?
The 2017 Kia Soul earns Good ratings from the IIHS on all crash tests and five-star ratings for head-on and side-impact collisions from NHTSA, along with four-star ratings on NHTSA’s rollover test.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The Soul includes an optional reversing camera, plus optional lane-departure warning and forward-collision warning systems. But it lacks automatic emergency braking, which is a notable gap if safety tech is high on your list. That missing feature is the main reason it falls short of top-tier active-safety recognition.
Should I buy a 2017 Kia Soul or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 52.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.92% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 Soul returns with an optional turbocharged engine, updated looks, and new technology, while still standing out for its quirky styling and practical everyday usefulness.
The bottom line: If you want the Soul’s distinctive design and can find a clean, well-kept example at a fair price, the 2017 model is a solid choice. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years for the best mix of equipment and condition, but the 2017 remains appealing because it adds updated styling and tech without losing the Soul’s core personality.
