CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Kia Soul
overall

Summary
With 88 currently listed for sale near Los Angeles, CA and an average price of $9,908.00, 44.3% of 2017 Kia Souls for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Kia Soul 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.33 / 10.
96.6% of 2017 Soul models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Kia Soul corners the market on boxy hatchbacks, and that shape remains its defining trait. It is still the quirkiest option in its price range, which gives it a clear personality that helps it stand out from more conventional small cars. The 2017 Kia Soul also returns with an optional turbocharged engine, updated looks, and new technology, giving buyers a little more to consider beyond its distinctive styling.
At the same time, the 2017 Kia Soul is described as decidedly average when it comes to performance and features. It stands out for its looks, but not for its value, so its appeal is less about being the most compelling all-around bargain and more about offering a memorable design with some added equipment. Owner feedback reinforces that balance, with praise for its value, fuel economy, comfortable ride, spacious interior, and modern features, alongside complaints about missing armrests and a media interface that could be better.

Lean, mean Kia machine! Shutting my drivers side door for the first time, I could tell the quality of this vehicle! Solid. Stable. Just drove her through a horrible blizzard and she performed like an SUV. I feel safe and sporty behind the wheel -- shes got ZIP! Im 51 and with the telescoping steering wheel plus seat controls, I fit perfectly. The back-up camera and audio features are a marvel. I bought the right vehicle for me!

Sporty but not dodgy , responsive but not twitchy, great on gas mileage but does a decent job of taming the road without too much noise. The creature comfort level is higher than anticipated. I do wish the media interface was better, but it is a 2017.

How much does the 2017 Kia Soul cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $9,307 |
| Year-Round Low | $9,134.62 |
| Year-Round High | $9,601.48 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $9,535 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.39% |
Prices have softened 2.39% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
With 1,230 listings available, you have a solid amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $9,134.62, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Kia Soul a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Kia Soul earns a 4.75/5 user rating and a 6.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 8/10.
Drivers consistently praise its great value, good fuel economy, comfortable ride, spacious interior, and modern features. That lines up with the Soul’s role as a quirky, practical hatchback that gives you personality without forcing you into something conventional.
The overview also frames it as a small car with a distinctive design and added tech, so it makes the most sense if you want something memorable that still works well for everyday use. Only 25.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market is selective rather than flooded with bargains.
Is the 2017 Kia Soul reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with praise for its great value, good fuel economy, comfortable ride, and spacious interior. That kind of feedback usually matters more than a single feature list when you’re trying to judge how a used car will hold up over time.
The expert review also describes the Soul as a practical, easy-to-live-with hatchback rather than something fragile or overly complicated, and it notes that the turbocharged setup adds useful passing power without changing the car’s basic mission. The first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house through the available connected-service package, which is a small ownership perk if you buy a well-equipped example.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the Soul’s personality and more about how well the previous owner maintained it and whether the equipment you want is actually present.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Kia Soul?
At 54.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on condition details that matter in a used hatchback: signs of prior bodywork, interior wear, and whether the equipment level matches what you expect.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base version starts with a manual transmission and a 1.6-liter, 130-hp 4-cylinder engine, while the Soul + adds a 2-liter, 161-hp 4-cylinder and automatic transmission. The higher trim also unlocks the optional touchscreen and connected features, so the base car is the one most likely to feel stripped down.
- Powertrain: You get a 1.6-liter, 130-hp 4-cylinder in the base car, a 2-liter, 161-hp 4-cylinder in the Soul +, and a turbocharged version of the entry-level engine in the ! trim with 201 horsepower. The turbo adds useful passing power, but the car still isn’t tuned to feel sporty.
- Safety package: The Soul lacks automatic emergency braking, and reversing camera, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning systems are optional. That means you should pay close attention to which safety equipment is actually installed on the specific car you’re considering.
- Infotainment: The optional touchscreen supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and the available Uvo package adds Kia’s telematics system. That package is only available on the Plus, so base-trim shoppers should verify the tech content carefully.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert review describes the Soul’s fuel economy as miserable, and the turbocharged engine is the least efficiency-focused setup in the lineup.
Which 2017 Kia Soul trim should I buy?
The 2017 Kia Soul is offered in 3 trim levels: Soul, Soul +, and !.
Here's the short version:
- Soul: This is the entry point, and it gives you the basic 1.6-liter engine and manual transmission. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price, but it’s also the trim most likely to feel sparse compared with the others.
- Soul +: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it adds the 2-liter engine, automatic transmission, and access to the optional touchscreen and Uvo package. If you want the most balanced mix of everyday usability and available tech, this is the trim to target.
- !: This is the most powerful version, with the turbocharged engine and the strongest acceleration in the lineup. Buy it if you want the extra punch and are willing to pay more for it, but it’s not the trim to choose if value is your top priority.
The safety content also notes that a reversing camera, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning are optional, while automatic emergency braking is not available.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Soul?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 25.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,230 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.39% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 54.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,134.62, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Kia Soul's resale value?
The current average of $9,307 sits slightly below last year's $9,535.
That kind of softening suggests the Soul is in a buyer-friendly phase right now, which can work against you if you’re planning to sell soon. If you buy at the right price, though, the lower entry point can help cushion future depreciation.
The Soul’s strong owner satisfaction helps support demand, especially because shoppers tend to remember its styling, space, and value. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Kia Soul safe?
It earns Good ratings from the IIHS and five-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with five-star ratings for head-on and side-impact collisions and four-star ratings on the rollover test.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The Soul’s safety story is mixed because it does well in crash testing but lags in active safety. The IIHS notes that it misses out on Top Safety Pick+ status because automatic emergency braking is not available, and reversing camera, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning systems are only optional.
That means you should pay close attention to the exact equipment on the used example you’re considering. If safety tech matters to you, a well-equipped trim is the smarter buy than a stripped-down one.
Should I buy a 2017 Kia Soul or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 25.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.39% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 update brings an optional turbocharged engine, refreshed styling, and new technology.
The bottom line: If you want the Soul’s quirky styling with a little more tech and a softer used-car price, the 2017 is a sensible target. If you’re mainly shopping for maximum value or a cleaner market, you may want to compare it with nearby years and focus on the best-maintained example rather than the newest badge.
