For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about finding a well-kept example with the features and condition you want.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Kia Soul?

At 52.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and signs of prior repair. Because the Soul’s appeal depends heavily on comfort, features, and condition, it is worth checking that the cabin, electronics, and convenience equipment all work as expected. If you are comparing multiple listings, focus on maintenance records and overall wear rather than mileage alone.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base version comes with a manual transmission and a 1.6-liter, 130-hp 4-cylinder engine, while the Soul + adds a 2-liter, 161-hp 4-cylinder engine and an automatic transmission. The most powerful version is the turbocharged model, which adds much more power and is the one to consider if you want the strongest acceleration, while the Plus is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it unlocks more equipment.
• Powertrain: The base engine is a 1.6-liter, 130-hp 4-cylinder, the Soul + uses a 2-liter, 161-hp 4-cylinder, and the turbocharged version raises output to 201 horsepower. The expert review says the turbo helps with merging and carrying heavy loads, but the Soul is still tuned more for everyday practicality than sporty driving.
• Safety package: The Soul lacks the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick+ badge because automatic emergency braking is not available. A reversing camera, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning are optional, but semi-autonomous features like active cruise control and active lane assist are not available.
• Infotainment: An optional touchscreen adds Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and the Uvo package also brings Kia’s telematics system. That setup can remember where you parked, tell you if the car needs service, and let you schedule service from the dashboard.

Which 2017 Kia Soul trim should I buy?

The 2017 Kia Soul is offered in 3 trim levels: base, Soul +, and !.

Here's the short version:

• base: This is the least expensive way into the Soul, but it is also the most stripped-down. You get the 1.6-liter engine and manual transmission, so it makes sense only if your priority is the lowest entry price and you are comfortable giving up the extra equipment available on higher trims.
• Soul +: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the 2-liter engine and automatic transmission, and it unlocks the optional tech package with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Uvo. If you want the most balanced mix of features and everyday usability, this is the trim to target.
• !: This is the performance-oriented choice, with the turbocharged engine and the strongest output in the lineup. It is the right pick if you want the quickest Soul and are willing to pay more for it, but the review still frames the car as more practical than sporty.

The Soul lacks automatic emergency braking, which is the key safety-package gap to keep in mind across the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Soul?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the best listings.

• Deal availability: 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,175 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.32% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 52.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $8,804, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Kia Soul's resale value?

The current average of $8,829 sits slightly below last year's $9,425.

That softer pricing suggests the Soul is currently a buyer-friendly used car, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. The model’s distinctive styling and strong owner satisfaction can help support demand, especially if the car is clean, well maintained, and equipped with desirable tech features. If you buy well now, you may have a better chance of preserving value later by choosing a trim and condition level that other shoppers want.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Kia Soul safe?

The 2017 Kia Soul earns Good ratings on all IIHS crash tests and five-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with five-star ratings for head-on and side-impact collisions and four-star ratings on the rollover test.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The Soul’s safety story is mixed: crash performance is solid, but active safety is limited. The available driver-assistance features include a reversing camera, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning, but automatic emergency braking is not offered, and that keeps it from earning the IIHS’s top badge. If safety is a top priority, you should pay close attention to whether a listing has the optional equipment you want.

Should I buy a 2017 Kia Soul or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 52.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.32% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 update brings optional turbo power, refreshed looks, and new technology, while still keeping the Soul’s distinctive personality.

The bottom line: If you want the Soul’s quirky styling and updated tech at a lower used price, the 2017 is the right year to target. If you are shopping mainly on value and want the broadest set of alternatives, you can also compare nearby years, but the 2017 remains appealing when you find a clean, well-equipped example at the right price.
