CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Kia Soul
overall

Summary
With 77 currently listed for sale near Los Angeles, CA and an average price of $8,673.00, 44.2% of 2017 Kia Souls for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Kia Soul 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.33 / 10.
93.5% of 2017 Soul models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Kia Soul corners the market on boxy hatchbacks, and that shape remains its defining trait. It is still the quirkiest option in its price range, which gives it a clear personality that helps it stand out from more conventional small cars. The 2017 Kia Soul also returns with an optional turbocharged engine, updated looks, and new technology, giving buyers a little more to consider beyond its distinctive styling.
At the same time, the 2017 Kia Soul is described as decidedly average when it comes to performance and features. It stands out for its looks, but not for its value, so its appeal is less about being the most compelling all-around bargain and more about offering a memorable design with some added equipment. Owner feedback reinforces that balance, with praise for its value, fuel economy, comfortable ride, spacious interior, and modern features, alongside complaints about missing armrests and a media interface that could be better.

Lean, mean Kia machine! Shutting my drivers side door for the first time, I could tell the quality of this vehicle! Solid. Stable. Just drove her through a horrible blizzard and she performed like an SUV. I feel safe and sporty behind the wheel -- shes got ZIP! Im 51 and with the telescoping steering wheel plus seat controls, I fit perfectly. The back-up camera and audio features are a marvel. I bought the right vehicle for me!

Sporty but not dodgy , responsive but not twitchy, great on gas mileage but does a decent job of taming the road without too much noise. The creature comfort level is higher than anticipated. I do wish the media interface was better, but it is a 2017.

| Year-Round High | $9,601.44 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $9,419 |

Is the 2017 Kia Soul a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Kia Soul earns a 4.75/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. It also earns a 6.33/10 expert rating.
The standout strength is Look and feel at 8/10.
Drivers consistently praise its value, good fuel economy, comfortable ride, spacious interior, and modern features. That lines up well with the Soul’s role as a quirky, practical hatchback that gives you personality without giving up everyday usability.
With 28.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Kia Soul reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with praise for its value, fuel economy, comfortable ride, spacious interior, and modern features. The expert review also frames it as a practical, easy-to-live-with hatchback rather than something that asks much from you day to day.
The tech package adds convenience features like service reminders and scheduling, which can make ownership feel simpler over time. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific car you choose has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by years of regular use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Kia Soul?
At 53.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and signs of prior repair. Because this model’s appeal is tied to its personality and equipment, condition matters a lot: a clean, well-kept example is more likely to feel like the right buy than one with cosmetic or accident-related issues.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base version comes with a manual transmission and a 1.6-liter, 130-hp 4-cylinder engine, while the Soul Plus adds a 2-liter, 161-hp 4-cylinder engine and automatic transmission. The higher trim also unlocks more equipment, and the Uvo package is available only for the Plus.
- Powertrain: You get a 1.6-liter, 130-hp 4-cylinder engine on the base version, a 2-liter, 161-hp 4-cylinder engine on the Plus, and a turbocharged version of the entry-level engine that raises output to 201 horsepower. The turbo adds stronger passing and merging ability, but the car still isn’t tuned to feel sporty.
- Safety package: A reversing camera, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning are optional, but automatic emergency braking is not available. The Soul earns Good ratings across IIHS crash tests and gets five-star ratings from NHTSA for head-on and side-impact collisions, plus four stars on the rollover test.
- Infotainment: An optional touchscreen adds Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and the Uvo package also brings Kia’s telematics features, including service reminders, parking memory, and remote scheduling through the app.
Which 2017 Kia Soul trim should I buy?
The 2017 Kia Soul is offered in 3 trim levels: Soul, Soul Plus, and !.
Here's the short version:
- Soul: This is the entry point, with a manual transmission and the 1.6-liter, 130-hp engine. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and are comfortable keeping things simple.
- Soul Plus: This trim adds the 2-liter, 161-hp engine and automatic transmission, and it unlocks the Uvo package with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Kia’s connected features. This is the best-value trim if you want the most useful mix of equipment and convenience.
- !: This is the most powerful version, with the turbocharged engine rated at 201 horsepower. It’s the right pick if you want the strongest acceleration and don’t mind paying more for it.
The safety package still leaves out automatic emergency braking, even on higher trims.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Soul?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,226 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.25% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 53.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,132.20, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Kia Soul's resale value?
The current average of $9,208 sits slightly below last year's $9,419.
That kind of softening suggests the market has become a little more favorable for buyers, but it also means sellers may need to price carefully to stay competitive. If you own one, a clean history and strong condition matter more when the broader market is already leaning lower. Well-kept examples should still attract attention because the Soul’s personality and practicality remain part of its appeal.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Kia Soul safe?
It earns Good ratings across IIHS crash tests and five-star ratings from NHTSA for head-on and side-impact collisions, plus four stars on the rollover test.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The Soul includes optional lane-departure warning and forward-collision warning, and a reversing camera is also optional. But it lacks automatic emergency braking, which keeps it from earning top IIHS honors. That missing feature is the main safety caveat to keep in mind if you want the most advanced protection tech.
Should I buy a 2017 Kia Soul or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 53.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.25% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 model adds an optional turbocharged engine, updated looks, and new technology.
The bottom line: If you want the Soul’s quirky styling with updated tech and a strong owner-satisfaction record, the 2017 is a sensible target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare it carefully against nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-priced example rather than chasing a specific badge or trim.
