How much does the 2017 Kia Soul cost?

Prices have softened 7.45% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,171 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2017 Kia Soul a good car?

Yes — the 2017 Kia Soul earns a 4.75/5 user rating and a 6.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 8/10.

Drivers consistently praise the Soul for its great value, good fuel economy, and comfortable ride. The roomy cabin and modern features also come through as recurring positives, which fits a car aimed at shoppers who want something distinctive rather than conventional.

That lines up with the Soul’s role as a quirky hatchback with updated looks and new technology, so it makes the most sense if you want personality, practicality, and everyday comfort in one package. With 29.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s still some market support for shoppers who are selective.

Is the 2017 Kia Soul reliable?

Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The user feedback points to a car that feels dependable and trouble-free in day-to-day use, with owners repeatedly highlighting its good fuel economy, comfortable ride, and spacious interior. That kind of feedback suggests the Soul is the sort of vehicle you can count on for regular commuting and routine errands.

The expert review also describes the Soul as a practical, everyday hatchback rather than a high-strung machine, which supports the idea that ownership should be straightforward. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about complexity and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not worn down by heavy use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Kia Soul?

At 53.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the cabin and electronics still feel consistent with the mileage and asking price.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base version comes with a manual transmission and a 1.6-liter, 130-hp 4-cylinder engine, while the Soul + adds a 2-liter, 161-hp 4-cylinder engine and an automatic transmission. The ! trim is the most powerful version, with a turbocharged entry-level engine and 201 horsepower. The base trim is the most stripped-down choice, while the Plus is the better-value pick if you want the stronger engine and access to more options.
• Powertrain: You get a 1.6-liter, 130-hp 4-cylinder on the base model, a 2-liter, 161-hp 4-cylinder on the Soul +, and a turbocharged version of the entry-level engine on the ! trim with 201 horsepower. The review notes that the turbo adds useful passing power and easier merging, but the car still isn’t meant to feel sporty.
• Safety package: The Soul lacks automatic emergency braking, which keeps it from earning top IIHS honors. A reversing camera, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning are optional, but semi-autonomous features like active cruise control and active lane assist are not available.
• Infotainment: An optional touchscreen adds Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and the Uvo package also brings Kia’s telematics system. That setup can remember where you parked, tell you if service is needed, and let you schedule service from the dashboard.
• Fuel efficiency: Owners praise the Soul’s good fuel economy, and the expert review also points to the car’s efficiency as a strength.

Which 2017 Kia Soul trim should I buy?

The 2017 Kia Soul is offered in 3 trim levels: base, Soul +, and !.

Here's the short version:

• base: This is the least expensive way into the Soul, but it’s also the most basic. You get the 1.6-liter engine and a manual transmission, with the automatic available only as an extra-cost upgrade. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and don’t mind keeping equipment simple.
• Soul +: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the 2-liter engine and automatic transmission, and it unlocks more available equipment. It’s the trim to target if you want the strongest balance of everyday usability and feature access.
• !: This is the most powerful Soul, with the turbocharged engine and 201 horsepower. It’s the right pick if you want the quickest version, but the review makes clear that the Soul still isn’t a sporty car at heart.

The safety content notes that the Soul lacks automatic emergency braking, and that omission keeps it from top IIHS recognition.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Soul?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,171 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.45% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 53.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $8,796, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Kia Soul's resale value?

The current average of $8,796 sits slightly below last year's $9,504.

That decline suggests the Soul has become more affordable for used buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. If you own one, the current market shows that buyers are still interested, but they are being selective about condition, equipment, and history.

The Soul’s distinctive styling and strong owner satisfaction can help support demand, especially for cleaner examples with desirable features. Well-kept listings should remain easier to move than rougher ones, but the softer price trend means you should expect resale to be shaped heavily by condition.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Kia Soul safe?

The 2017 Soul earns Good ratings from the IIHS, but it lacks the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick+ badge. According to NHTSA, it earns five-star ratings for head-on and side-impact collisions, five-star ratings overall, and a four-star rating on the rollover test.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety package includes a reversing camera, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning as optional equipment. The main shortcoming is the lack of automatic emergency braking, which is a key reason it falls short of top-tier active-safety recognition.

Should I buy a 2017 Kia Soul or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 29.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 53.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.45% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 update brings an optional turbocharged engine, updated looks, and new technology, while still keeping the Soul’s quirky personality.

The bottom line: The 2017 Soul makes the most sense if you want the updated styling and tech of this model year and you’re willing to shop carefully for a clean example. If your priority is maximizing value, a lower-priced nearby year may be worth considering, but the 2017 is the better pick when you want the refreshed look and a stronger feature set.
