CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Kia Sorento
overall

Summary
With 1,251 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,583.00, 31.3% of 2017 Kia Sorentos for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Kia Sorento 4.6 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 9.33 / 10.
60.2% of 2017 Sorento models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Kia Sorento stands out as a midsize crossover SUV that earns praise for its styling and design, comfort and controls, safety and technology, value and practicality, and driving dynamics. It is presented as one of the best vehicles in its segment, which makes it appealing to shoppers who want a well-rounded SUV rather than one that excels in only a single area.
It also has a strong ownership appeal because it is engineered to exceed the requirements of the most demanding warranty coverage in the business. That said, owner feedback suggests a few tradeoffs: the third row can be cramped and not very accessible, and some drivers wished for a bigger screen. Even so, the overall impression is of a comfortable, stylish SUV that delivers broad competence and strong everyday usefulness.

I love the car overall, great for my family and I. One thing I don’t like about it, on cold days I can’t start my car up and go back in the house! The doors won’t stay locked but other than that, no issues!

Have not received the car yet. It is yet to be delivered. But everything we have read and watched has been very positive about this car. Everyone keeps comparing the third row seats and less luggage storage to other larger vehicles. We keep saying, this is a cross over, not a minivan. If you want a third row with lots of extra luggage space, buy a minivan not a cross over. I am sure we will love the car!

Very nice car. Rides as good as a Lexus. Has more power than I expected for a 4 cylinder. Handles well.

Is the 2017 Kia Sorento a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Kia Sorento earns a 4.6/5 user rating and a 9.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Cost effectiveness, Technology, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, stylish interior, and strong comfort, and many also like the power, especially with the V6 engine option. The Sorento’s broad appeal also shows up in its well-rounded mix of styling, safety, technology, value, and practicality.
In use, it fits you well if you want a midsize crossover SUV that feels polished and capable rather than narrowly specialized. With 27.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Kia Sorento reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a vehicle that many owners find dependable, with repeated praise for the smooth ride, comfort, and overall satisfaction. The ownership story is also reinforced by the model’s strong warranty-oriented engineering and the sense that it is built for long-term use.
The expert review also emphasizes that Kia has engineered the Sorento to exceed demanding warranty coverage, which supports the impression of durability and confidence over time. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the model’s overall reputation and more about making sure any individual vehicle has been cared for properly.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Kia Sorento?
At 59.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with a lower asking price. Pay close attention to signs of prior bodywork, interior wear, and how well the third row and infotainment system function in daily use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from L to SX Limited, and the base L is the most stripped-down version. Higher trims add more upscale styling and equipment, while the top version brings the most premium cabin presentation.
- Powertrain: You can find a 185-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder, a 240-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, and a 290-horsepower 3.3-liter V6. The V6 is the strongest choice, and AWD is available on most trims.
- Safety package: Automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and lane-departure warning are available on all trims except the basic L. The LX V6 can add blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, and only the SX Limited gets a 360-degree surround-view camera.
- Infotainment: UVO is easy to use, with logically arranged menus, a home screen that shows the map and media info, and support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also includes connected services without a paid subscription.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 with AWD is expected to return 19 mpg in combined driving, and the test vehicle averaged 19.4 mpg.
Which 2017 Kia Sorento trim should I buy?
The 2017 Kia Sorento is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LX, EX, SX, and SX Limited.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the entry point, but it misses out on much of the advanced safety equipment available on the rest of the lineup. It makes sense only if you want the lowest-cost way into the Sorento.
- LX: This is the best-value starting point for many shoppers because it opens the door to more available equipment and can be paired with the stronger V6. If you want a sensible balance of price and capability, this is the trim to focus on first.
- EX: This trim adds the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine as standard, giving you a stronger powertrain without jumping all the way to the top of the range. It’s a smart pick if you want more punch and still care about value.
- SX: This trim makes the V6 standard and moves the Sorento further toward a more premium feel. It suits you if you want stronger performance and a more upscale overall experience.
- SX Limited: This is the most luxurious version, with the richest cabin presentation and the most complete equipment list. Choose it if you want the most premium Sorento and are willing to pay for it.
Safety equipment is available across the lineup except on the basic L, and the SX Limited is the only trim with the 360-degree surround-view camera.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Sorento?
The market looks selective rather than overheated, so you can shop with patience and still find worthwhile opportunities.
- Deal availability: 27.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,273 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.67% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,387.58, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Kia Sorento's resale value?
The current average of $11,437 sits slightly below last year's $12,522.
That softer pricing suggests the Sorento has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. It also means your resale outcome will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim choice, since cleaner examples should stand out more in a value-conscious market.
Because the model has broad appeal and strong owner satisfaction, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than less desirable alternatives. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Kia Sorento safe?
Top Safety Pick+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and a five-star crash test rating from the federal government.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
The Sorento’s safety story is strengthened by automatic emergency braking, which is newly available for 2017. Kia also offers adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and lane-departure warning, with those systems available on all trims except the basic L.
If you move up to the LX V6, you can add blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, and the SX Limited is the only trim with a 360-degree surround-view camera. That means the safest and most fully equipped versions are higher in the lineup, while the base L misses out on some of the most useful driver-assistance features.
Should I buy a 2017 Kia Sorento or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 27.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.67% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines strong styling, comfort, safety, technology, value, and driving dynamics in one well-rounded package.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $10,023, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $11,437 average.
- It brings a more upscale appearance, a refined interior, and a new turbocharged engine option.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around package, the 2017 is the better target because it pairs broad competence with a softer market price and strong owner satisfaction. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the value alternative to compare closely, especially if you find one in excellent condition.
