CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Kia Sorento
overall

Summary
With 1,246 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,336, 30.5% of 2017 Kia Sorentos for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Kia Sorento 4.6 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 9.33 / 10.
59.5% of 2017 Sorento models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Kia Sorento stands out as a midsize crossover SUV that makes a strong case for itself across styling and design, comfort and controls, safety and technology, value and practicality, and driving dynamics. It is presented as one of the best vehicles in its segment, which gives it broad appeal for shoppers who want an all-around capable family crossover rather than a one-note specialist.
It also carries an emphasis on durability and ownership confidence, since it is engineered to exceed the requirements of the most demanding warranty coverage in the business. Owner feedback generally reinforces its strengths, with praise for the smooth ride and stylish interior, along with comfort and power. At the same time, some owners point to a cramped third row that is not very accessible, and a few wished for a bigger screen or reported occasional engine issues, so its appeal is strongest for buyers who value comfort and overall balance more than maximum rear-seat space.

I love the car overall, great for my family and I. One thing I don’t like about it, on cold days I can’t start my car up and go back in the house! The doors won’t stay locked but other than that, no issues!

Have not received the car yet. It is yet to be delivered. But everything we have read and watched has been very positive about this car. Everyone keeps comparing the third row seats and less luggage storage to other larger vehicles. We keep saying, this is a cross over, not a minivan. If you want a third row with lots of extra luggage space, buy a minivan not a cross over. I am sure we will love the car!

Very nice car. Rides as good as a Lexus. Has more power than I expected for a 4 cylinder. Handles well.

How much does the 2017 Kia Sorento cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $11,362 |
| Year-Round Low | $11,335 |
| Year-Round High | $12,254 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $12,249 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.24% |
Prices have softened 7.24% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,234 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable selection to compare.
Is the 2017 Kia Sorento a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Kia Sorento earns a 4.6/5 user rating and a 9.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Cost effectiveness, Technology, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, stylish interior, comfort, and power. The Sorento also fits shoppers who want a well-rounded family crossover rather than a one-note specialist, with broad appeal across styling, practicality, and driving dynamics.
There are 31.4% good or great deals in the market, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Kia Sorento reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels comfortable, powerful, and generally dependable, with many shoppers appreciating the V6 engine option and the overall ownership experience. The review summary also emphasizes the Sorento’s smooth ride and stylish interior, which often go hand in hand with positive long-term impressions.
The expert review reinforces that sense of durability by noting Kia’s long-running focus on engineering vehicles to exceed demanding warranty coverage. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about the core package and more about making sure any individual example has been maintained well and doesn’t have unresolved engine or third-row-related concerns.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Kia Sorento?
At 59.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with a prior claim. Pay close attention to interior condition, third-row usability, and whether the vehicle feels as solid and smooth as the reviews suggest.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from L to SX Limited, and the base L misses out on several advanced safety features that are available on the other trims.
- Powertrain: You can get a 185-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder, a 240-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, or a 290-horsepower 3.3-liter V6; the V6 is the strongest choice and can tow up to 5,000 pounds.
- Safety package: Automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and lane-departure warning are available on all trims except the basic L; blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert is available on the LX V6, and the SX Limited adds a 360-degree surround-view camera.
- Infotainment: Kia’s UVO system is easy to use, supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and includes connected services without a paid subscription.
- Fuel efficiency: With AWD and the V6 engine, the Sorento is expected to get 19 mpg in combined driving, and the test vehicle averaged 19.4 mpg.
Which 2017 Kia Sorento trim should I buy?
The 2017 Kia Sorento is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LX, EX, SX, and SX Limited.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the entry point, but it’s the least appealing choice if you want the Sorento’s stronger safety and convenience features.
- LX: This trim adds more flexibility, and it’s the starting point if you want to step up without going all the way to the pricier upper trims.
- EX: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it gets the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and opens the door to more available equipment.
- SX: This is the right pick if you want the stronger V6 as standard and a more upscale overall feel.
- SX Limited: This is the most luxurious version, with the richest feature set and the 360-degree surround-view camera.
The safety package is strongest on trims above the base L, where the advanced driver-assistance features are available.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Sorento?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,234 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.24% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,335, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Kia Sorento's resale value?
The current average of $11,362 sits slightly below last year's $12,249.
That price movement suggests the Sorento has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stabilizes. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you may be starting from a more favorable value position than a year ago.
The model’s broad appeal also helps support demand, especially among shoppers who want comfort, practicality, and a polished driving experience in one package. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Kia Sorento safe?
The 2017 Kia Sorento earns Top Safety Pick+ status from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and a five-star crash test rating from the federal government.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Automatic emergency braking is newly available for this model year, and the Sorento also offers adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and lane-departure warning. Those systems are available on all trim levels except the basic L, while the LX V6 can add blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert and the SX Limited gets a 360-degree surround-view camera.
Should I buy a 2017 Kia Sorento or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.24% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds newly available automatic emergency braking and earns Top Safety Pick+ status.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $9,953, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $11,362 average.
- It brings a more upscale appearance and a refined interior.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger safety story, broader appeal, and better-equipped used-market sweet spot, the 2017 is the better target. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the value play, especially if you’re comfortable giving up some of the 2017’s added safety and market momentum.
