CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Kia Sorento
overall

Summary
With 1,272 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,188, 32.7% of 2017 Kia Sorentos for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Kia Sorento 4.6 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 9.33 / 10.
59.7% of 2017 Sorento models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Kia Sorento stands out as a midsize crossover SUV that makes a strong case for itself across styling and design, comfort and controls, safety and technology, value and practicality, and driving dynamics. It is presented as one of the best vehicles in its segment, which gives it broad appeal for shoppers who want an all-around capable family crossover rather than a one-note specialist.
It also carries an emphasis on durability and ownership confidence, since it is engineered to exceed the requirements of the most demanding warranty coverage in the business. Owner feedback generally reinforces its strengths, with praise for the smooth ride and stylish interior, along with comfort and power. At the same time, some owners point to a cramped third row that is not very accessible, and a few wished for a bigger screen or reported occasional engine issues, so its appeal is strongest for buyers who value comfort and overall balance more than maximum rear-seat space.

I love the car overall, great for my family and I. One thing I don’t like about it, on cold days I can’t start my car up and go back in the house! The doors won’t stay locked but other than that, no issues!

Have not received the car yet. It is yet to be delivered. But everything we have read and watched has been very positive about this car. Everyone keeps comparing the third row seats and less luggage storage to other larger vehicles. We keep saying, this is a cross over, not a minivan. If you want a third row with lots of extra luggage space, buy a minivan not a cross over. I am sure we will love the car!

Very nice car. Rides as good as a Lexus. Has more power than I expected for a 4 cylinder. Handles well.

How much does the 2017 Kia Sorento cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $11,187 |
| Year-Round Low | $11,186 |
| Year-Round High | $12,176 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $12,174 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.11% |
Prices have softened 8.11% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,267 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment.
Is the 2017 Kia Sorento a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Kia Sorento earns a 4.6/5 user rating and a 9.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Cost effectiveness, Technology, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, stylish interior, comfort, and power, especially with the V6 engine option. The Sorento also fits well if you want a family crossover that balances comfort, practicality, and broad appeal rather than chasing one specialty.
With a 33.3% good-or-great-deal rate in the market, you have a decent chance of finding a competitively priced example.
Is the 2017 Kia Sorento reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with repeated praise for comfort, smoothness, and overall satisfaction. The expert review also emphasizes durability and ownership confidence, noting that the Sorento is engineered to exceed demanding warranty coverage expectations.
The ownership picture is strongest if you prioritize a well-kept example, since some owners mention occasional engine issues and a cramped third row. For used buyers, that means condition and maintenance history matter more than mileage alone.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Kia Sorento?
At 59.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection is especially worthwhile on this model because owner feedback includes occasional engine issues and some listings may have accident history. Pay close attention to interior condition, third-row usability, and whether the equipment level matches what you expect.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from L to SX Limited, and the base L is the most stripped-down version. The higher trims add more upscale materials and features, while the SX Limited stands out for its premium cabin treatment and the most complete equipment set.
- Powertrain: You can find a 185-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder, a 240-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, and a 290-horsepower 3.3-liter V6. The V6 is the strongest choice, and it can tow up to 5,000 pounds.
- Safety package: Automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and lane-departure warning are available on all trim levels except the basic L. The LX V6 can add blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, and only the SX Limited gets a 360-degree surround-view camera system.
- Infotainment: Kia’s UVO system is available for most versions, and it supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Siri, Pandora, Yelp, and connected services. The review also notes that the screen could be larger and more modern.
- Fuel efficiency: With AWD and the V6, the Sorento is expected to get 19 mpg in combined driving, and the test vehicle averaged 19.4 mpg on the review loop.
Which 2017 Kia Sorento trim should I buy?
The 2017 Kia Sorento is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LX, EX, SX, and SX Limited.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the entry point, but it is the least appealing if you want the Sorento’s better safety and convenience features. It also misses out on the available driver-assistance package, so it makes the most sense only if your budget is tight.
- LX: This is the trim to watch if you want a practical starting point with room to add more capability. It can be paired with the V6, and it opens the door to more available safety equipment than the base L.
- EX: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it gets the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine as standard and sits in the sweet spot between price and equipment. If you want a stronger engine without jumping all the way to the luxury-leaning trims, this is the one to focus on.
- SX: This trim brings the V6 as standard and moves the Sorento toward a more upscale feel. It suits you if you want stronger performance and a richer feature set without going all the way to the top.
- SX Limited: This is the most luxurious version, with the most premium cabin presentation and the 360-degree surround-view camera system. Choose it if you want the most upscale Sorento experience and are willing to pay for it.
The safety package is not available on the basic L trim, so if advanced driver assistance matters to you, shop above the base model.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Sorento?
This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough deal activity to reward patience.
- Deal availability: 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,267 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.11% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,186, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Kia Sorento's resale value?
The current average of $11,187 sits slightly below last year's $12,174.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at a strong price and keep the vehicle in good condition, you can reduce the impact of that softer market. Well-equipped trims with strong demand should hold up better than bare-bones examples.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Kia Sorento safe?
The 2017 Kia Sorento earns Top Safety Pick+ status from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and five-star ratings from the federal government.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Automatic emergency braking is newly available for this model year, and the Sorento also offers adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and lane-departure warning. Those systems, along with automatic emergency braking, are available on all trim levels except the basic L. The LX V6 can add blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, and only the SX Limited gets a 360-degree surround-view camera system.
Should I buy a 2017 Kia Sorento or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.11% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines strong value, safety, and comfort with a broad trim and powertrain spread.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $9,972, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $11,187 average.
- It is an all-new redesign with a more upscale appearance and a refined interior.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around package, the 2017 is the better pick because it blends value, safety, and broad appeal. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the smarter budget alternative, especially if you like the newer redesign and can live with its older-market pricing advantage.
