Summary

Why it stands out
The 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe stands out as a roomy, well-equipped midsize SUV that balances family usefulness with a more upscale feel than its older predecessors. It offers either two or three rows depending on configuration, and the third row gives it extra versatility for buyers who need more passenger space. The cabin is a strong point, with available leather, heated second-row seats, dual-zone climate control, and a rear-seat DVD entertainment option, while the rear seat legroom is described as a big selling point. Hyundai also gave it practical touches such as USB and iPod ports, roof cross rails, and a trailer hitch rated for up to 3,500 pounds.
Powertrain choice is another defining trait. The 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe could be had with a 2.4-liter inline-four or a 3.5-liter V6, and the V6 models were the stronger performers in the lineup. Standard equipment was generous for the class, including alloy wheels, air conditioning, power windows, a CD player, and a folding rear seat. It also carried Hyundai’s long warranty coverage, which adds to its appeal as a used buy.
That said, the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe is not perfect. Its steering and handling are described as sloppy, and while it was generally safe and well-equipped, it is now an older design. Even so, its combination of space, comfort, available V6 power, and value makes it a compelling choice for shoppers who want a practical SUV without spending much.

This is an excellent choice for me. It had all the features I wanted and it was the best value when compared to the Acura MDX or the Mazda CX9 which were the only other mid size crossovers with a third row seat. Most other vehicles were larger and didnt have a smooth ride. We ended up buying a Toyota Highlander because the seats in the Santa Fe were too narrow for my husband.

The ultimate trim package is great. Smooth ride, great features, fantastic warranty for CPO. Wish the ultimate included auto lift gate on the back, but not a major flaw.

Nice size...not too big but big enough. Powerful 6 cylinder that can tow. Stylish for an SUV.

| Current Average Price | $11,580 |
| Year-Round Low | $11,580 |
| Year-Round High | $13,004 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $12,917 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.35% |
Prices have softened 10.35% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 402 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe a good car?
Yes — the 4.67/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its smooth ride, powerful engine, and value for money, while also highlighting the upscale-feeling features and overall reliability. The Santa Fe’s roomy layout and family-friendly usefulness make it a practical fit if you want a midsize SUV with extra passenger space and comfort. With 33.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive offer.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers also describe it as reliable and value its trouble-free ownership experience, with praise centered on dependable performance and long-term confidence. That combination matters if you want a used SUV you can count on without stretching your budget.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that age and prior use can vary widely from one listing to the next, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe?
At 59.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from those with past damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection to check for wear, repairs, and any signs that the SUV has been used hard. Focus especially on overall condition, because the best value will come from a well-kept example rather than the cheapest listing.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 402 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.35% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,580, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe's resale value?
The current average of $11,580 sits slightly below last year's $12,917.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For future resale, a lower purchase price can reduce your depreciation exposure if you keep the SUV in strong condition. Well-kept examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones, especially when buyers see a fair asking price.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.35% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $14,440, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $11,580 average.
- It emphasizes safety, roominess, and dependability.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2017 is the stronger starting point because it costs less and still earns strong owner approval. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer-feeling alternative with a stronger safety-and-dependability pitch, the 2018 is the better secondary path for buyers who can stretch their budget.
