Why it stands out
The 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport stands out as a well-rounded midsize SUV that combines good looks, a comfortable interior, a roomy cargo area, and an affordable price. It is also presented as safe, technologically advanced, quick, and built in the U.S.A., which gives it a broader appeal than its value-oriented pricing might suggest.
That mix makes it easy to see why it would attract shoppers who want a practical family vehicle without giving up comfort or features. The available third-row-seat solution mentioned in the source also points to a version of the Santa Fe lineup for buyers who need more seating and cargo flexibility. At the same time, the emphasis on the Sport’s cargo space suggests that it is strongest as a comfortable, versatile two-row SUV rather than a maximum-space choice.

Great turning radius, good visibility, and easy to drive. I shoveled the car out of 3+ feet of snow and it started right up! Got my family out of the extreme weather comfortably and safely.

Love this car. It has everything you could want. It dries very comfortably and smooth, the breaking is awesome, and the surround camera view is such a helper. The Seats in the back lay down almost completely flat, provide a great space to pack or go camping, and the storage compartments in the trunk are perfect. Everything fits like a puzzle that’s easy to solve.

OMG, I am in love with my new car. I have luxury features I didnt even know I needed; a heated steering wheel is an absolute necessity at this point. I love the luxury features in this mid size family SUV, heated and cooled seats, with read heated seats that are also adjustable; my kids love to recline. Apple and Android car play Hyundai did not discriminate. Panoramic moonroof, 360 camera, the navigation view appears as an actual map, and the ride is so incredible smooth I love to drive this baby in sport. There is so much to say about this vehicle great buy.

Is the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport earns a 4.75/5 user rating and an 8.5/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.
Reviewers consistently praise its value, comfort, and features, and they also call out the spacious trunk and available luxury touches like heated and cooled seats. That lines up with the overview’s emphasis on a comfortable interior, roomy cargo area, and practical family use. With 31.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. Reviewers describe it as a value-focused SUV with comfort and features they appreciate over time, and the expert evaluation reinforces that sense of durability by describing Hyundai as a brand that won’t break anytime soon.
The driving impression also points to secure, trustworthy dynamics, which supports the idea that this is a vehicle you can count on. Hyundai’s warranty reputation and value-oriented engineering further strengthen the case for long-term ownership confidence. For used buyers, the main risk is less about the model’s basic dependability and more about how well a specific example has been maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport?
At 60.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on condition details that matter in a family SUV: signs of prior bodywork, wear in the cabin, and whether the features you want are actually present. If you’re considering a higher-mileage example, pay extra attention to how well the drivetrain and electronics have aged.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Santa Fe Sport is a 2-row, 5-passenger crossover SUV, and the base version uses a 185-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine. The cabin is described as busy and garish, and the 2017 update brought revised styling, minor interior changes, and new driver-assistance and safety technologies.
- Powertrain: Upgrade from the base engine and you get a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. A 6-speed automatic is standard, front-wheel drive is standard, all-wheel drive is optional, and Drive Mode Select offers Eco, Normal, and Sport settings.
- Safety package: The Santa Fe Sport includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, dynamic headlights, and a multi-view camera system. Blue Link adds SOS emergency assistance, automatic collision notification, and teen-driver features like speed and curfew alerts.
- Infotainment: Navigation-equipped versions get an 8-inch touchscreen, while models without navigation use a 7-inch screen. Both systems include Android Auto, but not Apple CarPlay, and Blue Link subscription services are available.
- Fuel efficiency: The turbocharged version averaged 21.5 mpg on the test loop and was estimated at 23 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport trim should I buy?
The 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport is offered in 2 trim levels: Santa Fe Sport and Santa Fe Sport 2.0T.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The Santa Fe Sport starts with the 185-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, and it does not get the turbocharged powertrain’s extra punch. It also lacks the richer equipment and stronger performance emphasis of the 2.0T.
- Sweet-spot trim: The Santa Fe Sport 2.0T is the better all-around pick if you want the stronger 240-horsepower turbo engine, 260 lb-ft of torque, and the more confident passing power that comes with it.
- Premium/top trim: The 2.0T Ultimate is the most fully equipped version described, with nearly all options, the 8-inch navigation screen, the Infinity Surround Sound audio system, and the most upscale feature set.
- Off-road trim: None of the trims described here are aimed at off-road use, and the SUV’s 7.3 inches of ground clearance keeps it in normal daily-driver territory.
The safety package is a major strength across the lineup, with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, dynamic headlights, and a multi-view camera system.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport?

What is the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport's resale value?
The current average of $11,526 sits slightly below last year's $12,635.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point today. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and feature content rather than broad market momentum alone. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment should hold buyer interest better than rougher or more basic listings.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport safe?
The Santa Fe Sport gets a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and a five-star crash-test rating from the federal government.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
The safety package includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, dynamic headlights, and a multi-view camera system. Blue Link also adds SOS emergency assistance, automatic collision notification, and teen-driver tools such as speed and curfew alerts. For a used buyer, the main thing to verify is that these driver-assistance features are present and functioning as expected on the specific trim you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.78% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 update brought revised styling, new infotainment systems, and a long list of new driver-assistance and safety technologies.
The bottom line: If you want a well-equipped, value-forward midsize SUV with strong safety credentials and broad appeal, the 2017 Santa Fe Sport is an easy year to consider. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can use the softened market and sizable inventory to shop carefully and target the best-condition example rather than settling for the first low sticker you see.
