What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport?

At 60.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, alignment, and signs of prior repair. Focus on overall condition, because the best used example here is likely to be the one that has been maintained consistently and still feels tight, clean, and well cared for. If you’re comparing multiple listings, put the cleanest history and strongest maintenance record at the top of your list.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Santa Fe Sport is a 2-row, 5-passenger crossover SUV with a choice between a 4-cylinder and a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. The base setup is the 185-horsepower 2.4-liter engine, while the upgraded turbocharged 2.0-liter engine brings 240 horsepower and stronger acceleration. The safety content also notes a broad set of driver-assistance technologies, so you should pay attention to which features are included on the specific trim you’re considering.
• Powertrain: The base trim uses a 185-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, while the upgraded turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder makes 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. A 6-speed automatic transmission is standard, all-wheel drive is available, and the turbo model is described as brisk and capable on grades.
• Safety package: The Santa Fe Sport includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, dynamic headlights, and a multi-view camera system. Blue Link adds SOS emergency assistance, automatic collision notification, and teen-driver alerts. The safety content does not indicate a trim-level gap for these features.
• Infotainment: Versions with navigation get an 8-inch touchscreen, while models without navigation use a 7-inch screen. Both systems include Android Auto but not Apple CarPlay, and Blue Link subscription services are available.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert evaluation cites 21.5 mpg on a test loop and notes that this fell short of the EPA’s 23 mpg combined estimate.

Which 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport trim should I buy?

The 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport is offered in 2 trim levels: Santa Fe Sport and Santa Fe Sport 2.0T.

Here's the short version:

• Santa Fe Sport: This is the trim to start with if you want the lower entry price and the standard 185-horsepower 2.4-liter engine. It gives you the core Santa Fe Sport formula: a comfortable, practical two-row SUV with good value and the broad safety and tech story that makes this model appealing in the first place.
• Santa Fe Sport 2.0T: This is the better choice if you want the stronger turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 240 horsepower and more effortless passing power. It suits you best if you care more about acceleration and a more energetic driving feel than about sticking to the lowest possible purchase price.

The safety content highlights a strong suite of driver-assistance features and notes that the Santa Fe Sport earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and a five-star crash-test rating from the federal government.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.

• Deal availability: 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,393 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.50% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 60.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,028, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport's resale value?

The current average of $11,028 sits slightly below last year's $12,322.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the SUV more attractive to used buyers today but less favorable for a future seller trying to maximize return. If you buy at the current average or below, you may have less room for appreciation later unless the vehicle is especially clean, well equipped, and well maintained. Strong condition and a good ownership record matter more when the broader price trend is softening.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport safe?

The 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and a five-star crash-test rating from the federal government.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety package includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, dynamic headlights, and a multi-view camera system. Blue Link also adds SOS emergency assistance, automatic collision notification, and teen-driver alerts. That combination makes this a strong choice if safety technology is high on your list.

Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 60.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.50% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Expert or safety highlight specific to this year from ROOT "Expert test drive data"."Summary".

The bottom line: The 2017 model is the right path if you want a well-equipped, safety-focused SUV with a softer used-market price and strong owner satisfaction. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the current market trend makes this a good year to target, but you should be selective about condition and history because not every listing will be equally clean.

How does the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport compare to the 2017 Kia Sorento?
