CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback
overall

Summary
With 636 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,199, 33.6% of 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback 4.56 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
50.5% of 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback stands out as a practical, fun-to-drive compact car with extra cargo space and sport-oriented tweaks. It was also the first Civic Hatchback Honda sold in the U.S. since 2005, which gives it a special place in the Civic lineup. The car’s appeal is straightforward: it builds on the Civic’s broad popularity while adding the versatility of a hatchback body style.
That combination makes the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback especially attractive to buyers who want usefulness without giving up driving enjoyment. The expert test drive data describes it as “more of a good thing,” and notes that it offers even more to love than the already well-regarded Civic. Owner feedback generally reinforces that impression, with praise for its performance, reliability, spacious interior, smooth driving experience, and stylish design.
There are a few drawbacks worth keeping in mind. Some owners have reported concerns about the air conditioning system and paint quality, including flaking paint, and a lack of certain features such as GPS. Even so, the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback remains appealing for shoppers who value a roomy, versatile compact car with a sporty character.

I love the features in the car. It's exactly what my daughter wanted. It's a little too low to the ground.

I am obsessed with this car. Best car I have ever had. I previously had the LX, but it got totalled, and I bought the same exact car but it is the EX. Heated seats, sunroof, push start. I really, really love it.

The features on this car is something else. The car has a blind spot camera on the right mirror. Hondas are a really reliable car. We’ve had a Honda until it had 300k+ miles on it and had no problems. Only thing I wish it had was a GPS but it’s not a huge negative. I was looking at either the Mazda3 hatchback or the civic hatchback and ultimately went with the civic just with the sleek design of the vehicle. Super smooth in its driving and would definitely recommend going Honda!

Is the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback a good car?
Yes — it earns a 4.56/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Form and function, Cost effectiveness, Technology, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its performance, reliability, spacious interior, smooth driving experience, and stylish design. That lines up well with the overview: you’re looking at a practical compact hatchback that adds cargo versatility without giving up the Civic’s broad appeal or fun-to-drive character.
The market also looks supportive, with 34.0% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.56/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to reliability, and it also describes the car as a model people can count on for a smooth, trouble-free ownership experience. The expert notes reinforce that impression by emphasizing Honda’s long history of reliability and the Civic Hatchback’s practical, everyday usability.
The ownership risk for used buyers is less about the core reputation and more about finding a well-kept example, since condition and maintenance history will matter more than the badge alone.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback?
At 49.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has visible cosmetic wear or signs of inconsistent maintenance. Given the owner feedback, it’s smart to focus on the air conditioning system, paint condition, and any missing features that matter to you.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The hatchback’s styling is shared across the lineup, but the hatch-specific blacked-out wheels and honeycomb trim help distinguish it from the sedan. The cabin is smartly laid out and uses quality materials, while the hatchback body adds 25.7 cubic feet of cargo space.
- Powertrain: The hatchback uses a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. LX, EX, and EX-L Navi trims make 174 hp, while Sport and Sport Touring trims increase output to 180 hp. A 6-speed manual is standard on LX and Sport, while the CVT is optional on those trims and required on EX, EX-L Navi, and Sport Touring.
- Safety package: Honda Sensing is standard on Sport Touring and costs an additional $1,000 on EX-L Navi. It includes collision-mitigation braking, lane-keep assist, and active cruise control that works in stop-and-go traffic. LaneWatch is another useful option for blind-spot visibility.
- Infotainment: Higher trims can be equipped with a 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. EX-L Navi and Sport Touring add navigation. Manual-transmission models miss out on the better tech package and instead get a simpler audio setup.
- Fuel efficiency: No fuel-economy figure is stated in the provided data.
Which 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback trim should I buy?
The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback is offered in 5 trim levels: LX, Sport, EX, EX-L Navi, and Sport Touring.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the entry point, and it gives you the hatchback body, the turbocharged engine, and the standard manual transmission. It’s the simplest way to get into the model, but you give up the richer tech and safety content found higher up the range.
- Sport: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the more powerful 180 hp tune and keeps the manual transmission standard. If you want the hatchback’s sporty character without moving too far up the price ladder, this is the trim to target.
- EX: This trim shifts you toward convenience, with the CVT required and the more mainstream 174 hp tune. It suits you if you care more about easy daily driving and less about the manual-transmission experience.
- EX-L Navi: This is the trim to consider if you want the better tech and navigation, and it’s also the one where Honda Sensing becomes available for an extra $1,000. It’s a strong pick if you want a more complete feature set.
- Sport Touring: This is the most fully equipped version, and Honda Sensing is standard here. It’s the right choice if you want the most safety and convenience content in one package.
If safety features matter to you, the Honda Sensing package is the key trim-level upgrade to watch for.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage but still need to move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 638 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.24% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 49.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,679, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback's resale value?
The current average of $16,193 sits slightly below last year's $16,735.
That kind of price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can be good news if you’re buying now but less favorable if you’re planning to sell soon. A softer current average usually means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out, especially if similar cars are still plentiful.
Even so, the Civic Hatchback’s practical body style and strong reputation help support demand. If you keep the car in good condition and maintain it well, you should be in a better position when it’s time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.56/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback safe?
The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback earns five-star ratings from NHTSA.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Honda Sensing is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes collision-mitigation braking, lane-keep assist, and active cruise control that can follow traffic at low speeds. It is standard on Sport Touring and available on EX-L Navi for an additional $1,000.
LaneWatch is another helpful safety feature, especially if you drive in the city and want extra visibility when changing lanes.
Should I buy a 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 49.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Prices have softened 3.24% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.56/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert review highlights the hatchback’s extra cargo space and sporty, practical character.
The bottom line: If you want the first U.S.-market Civic Hatchback since 2005 and you value a practical, fun-to-drive compact car, the 2017 is an appealing choice. If you’re especially price-sensitive, focus on the best-maintained examples and be ready to compare condition carefully, since accident history and feature content vary meaningfully across listings.
