What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback?

At 50.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or shows uneven panel gaps, paint mismatch, or signs of wear that don’t match the mileage. It’s also smart to focus on condition details that matter in daily use, including interior wear, infotainment operation, and any signs of past electrical or climate-control problems. Because this model is popular with practical shoppers, the best examples are often the ones with clean records and consistent maintenance.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The hatchback’s styling is unique, with blacked-out wheels and honeycomb trim setting it apart, and the cabin is smartly laid out with quality materials and effective soundproofing. The base setup is simpler, while higher trims add more convenience and tech.
• Powertrain: The hatchback uses a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. LX, EX, and EX-L Navi trims make 174 hp, while Sport and Sport Touring trims increase output to 180 hp. A 6-speed manual is standard on LX and Sport, while the CVT is optional on LX and Sport and required on EX, EX-L Navi, and Sport Touring.
• Safety package: Honda Sensing adds collision-mitigation braking, lane-keep assist, and active cruise control that works even at low speeds. It is standard on Sport Touring and costs extra on EX-L Navi. LaneWatch is another available aid that shows blind-spot views on the dashboard screen.
• Infotainment: A 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is available, and EX-L Navi and Sport Touring add navigation. Manual-transmission cars miss out on that better tech and instead get a simpler audio setup.
• Fuel efficiency: No MPG figure is stated in the available data.

Which 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback trim should I buy?

The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback is offered in 5 trim levels: LX, Sport, EX, EX-L Navi, Sport Touring.

Here's the short version:

• LX: This is the simplest way into the hatchback, and it makes the most sense if you want the Civic’s core strengths without paying for extras. It’s also one of the trims where you can still choose the manual transmission, which suits you if you value a more engaging drive.
• Sport: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the more powerful 180-hp tune and keeps the manual transmission available. If you want the hatchback’s sporty character without jumping to the priciest versions, this is the one to focus on.
• EX: This trim is for you if you want a more comfort- and tech-oriented setup, but it requires the CVT. It’s a good middle ground if you care more about convenience than a manual gearbox.
• EX-L Navi: This is the right pick if you want navigation and a more upscale feel, and it’s also the trim where Honda Sensing becomes an available add-on. It suits buyers who want a better-equipped daily driver.
• Sport Touring: This is the most fully equipped version, and Honda Sensing is standard here. Choose it if you want the most complete package and don’t mind paying for it.

The safety-package trim note is simple: Honda Sensing is standard on Sport Touring and available on EX-L Navi for an extra cost.

What is the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback's resale value?

The current average of $15,871 sits slightly below last year's $16,726.

That decline suggests the market has softened enough to help you buy more selectively today, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive pricing environment if values continue to drift. Even so, the Civic Hatchback’s broad appeal, practicality, and strong owner satisfaction should help support demand when it’s time to sell. Well-kept examples with clean history and desirable equipment are likely to hold up better than rougher, higher-risk listings.

Should I buy a 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 50.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.11% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It’s the first Civic Hatchback Honda sold in the U.S. since 2005, and the expert evaluation says it offers even more to love than the already well-regarded Civic.

The bottom line: If you want the hatchback body style, strong owner satisfaction, and a softer used-car price than a year ago, the 2017 is a sensible buy. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can also compare nearby years, but the 2017 stands out as a well-rounded choice for shoppers who want practicality and driving enjoyment in one package.
