CarGurus Analysis: 2017 GMC Terrain

Summary
With 98 currently listed for sale near Washington, DC and an average price of $10,363, 21.4% of 2017 GMC Terrains for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 GMC Terrain 4.33 / 5 stars.
78.6% of 2017 Terrain models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 GMC Terrain stands out as a compact SUV that leans more toward comfort and everyday usability than outright performance. Owners consistently praise its comfortable ride, spacious interior, quiet cabin, and attractive design, which help give it a more polished feel than many small crossovers. It also benefits from the Terrain’s distinctive, more angular styling, which gives it a tougher look than some of its rivals.
At the same time, the 2017 Terrain is not the strongest choice for drivers who want quick acceleration. The available engine lineup in this generation included a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine and a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, and the guide notes that the 1.5-liter engine’s highway acceleration is not very good. Cargo space is another limitation, since the Terrain trails some top rivals in that area. Even so, buyers looking for a used compact SUV with a comfortable cabin, good value, and a more premium feel may find the 2017 GMC Terrain appealing.

Yeah ... it was a good value for the milage. My only complaint is that our car has this foul smell of freshly changed baby diapers even after taking it to car wash for detailed cleaning.

I compare my 2017 Terrain Denali to my sister's Cadillac. It rides just as nice, and has many of the same features. I'm very pleased.

How much does the 2017 GMC Terrain cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $11,109 |
| Year-Round Low | $11,025 |
| Year-Round High | $11,768 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,770 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.61% |
Prices have softened 5.61% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,395 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2017 GMC Terrain a good car?
Generally — the 4.33/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners most often praise the comfortable ride, spacious interior, quiet cabin, and attractive design, which make this Terrain appealing if you want a compact SUV that feels more polished and easy to live with. The overview also frames it as a comfort-first, everyday-use vehicle rather than a performance pick, so it fits you best if ride quality and cabin comfort matter more than quick acceleration. With 30.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s still meaningful market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 GMC Terrain reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle people generally feel good about living with over time, especially because the cabin comfort and smooth handling come up repeatedly. That kind of dependable day-to-day experience matters if you want a used SUV you can count on for routine driving. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is choosing a poorly maintained example, so condition and service history should carry real weight.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 GMC Terrain?
At 62.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from those with accident records. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially for signs of uneven wear, past bodywork, or neglected maintenance. Because this model is valued for comfort and usability, focus on cabin condition, ride quality, and how well the vehicle has been cared for overall.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 GMC Terrain?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,395 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.61% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,025, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 GMC Terrain's resale value?
The current average of $11,109 sits slightly below last year's $11,770.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. If you purchase near the lower end of the current range, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss when it’s time to sell. Demand should also stay supported by the strong owner satisfaction score and the Terrain’s comfort-focused appeal.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 GMC Terrain or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.61% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $14,150, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $11,109 average.
- It brings a redesigned look and more available features.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2017 if you want the better value and are willing to shop carefully for a clean example. If you’re price-sensitive, the 2017 is the stronger path; if you want a newer design and can pay more, the 2018 is the alternative to compare.
