CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Dodge Durango
overall

Summary
With 72 currently listed for sale near San Diego, CA and an average price of $15,518, 18.1% of 2017 Dodge Durangos for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Dodge Durango 4.56 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
65.3% of 2017 Durango models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Dodge Durango stands out as a full-size SUV that blends family-friendly space with real utility. It has room for up to 7 passengers and can tow up to 7,400 pounds, while still offering a crossover-like ride and the amenities a busy family needs to get through the day. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want something that can handle daily errands, road trips, and heavier-duty tasks without giving up comfort.
Inside, the 2017 Durango can range from basic to beautiful depending on trim, but even the highest versions do not aim for a refined luxury feel. Instead, the cabin keeps a rugged character that matches the Dodge brand, and the focus stays on function rather than appearance. At the same time, it can be very well equipped, with features to keep kids entertained and adults comfortable. Owners also praise its powerful V8 engine, stylish design, spacious interior, and smooth ride, though some have concerns about safety ratings, particularly crash tests.

It’s a great vehicle. I love the looks. I love the tow capacity: I love the features and room. The 3.6/8 speed is a great combo. But… the small offset crash rating is a disaster. And as a dad of teens it made me cross it off my list. Why hasn’t dodge addresses this? Even mitigated it?

Is the 2017 Dodge Durango a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Dodge Durango earns a 4.56/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating.
The model scores 8/10 across Performance, Form and function, and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its powerful V8 engine, spacious interior, and smooth ride, and they also like the range of features it offers. That lines up with the Durango’s role as a family-focused SUV that can still tow up to 7,400 pounds and carry up to 7 passengers, so you get a vehicle that can handle daily errands, road trips, and heavier-duty chores without feeling like a stripped-down utility rig.
Good and great deals percentage: 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Dodge Durango reliable?
Owners rate it 4.56/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels reliable and dependable in everyday family use, with praise for its smooth ride and broad usefulness. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Durango feels confident and controlled on the road, with solid braking and manners that are more crossover-like than truck-like.
The ownership picture is helped by the included 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain limited warranty, 3-year/36,000-mile basic limited warranty, and 5 years/60,000 miles of roadside assistance. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that higher-mileage examples may have seen hard family and towing use, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Dodge Durango?
At 60.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-trim or V8 model. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven tire wear, brake condition, and whether the cabin electronics and seating features all work as expected. Because this SUV can be used for family duty and towing, it’s smart to pay extra attention to wear that might come from heavier use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from the more basic SXT to the better-equipped GT, Citadel, and R/T. The base trim is the most stripped-down, with a smaller 5.0-inch screen and fewer comfort and convenience features, while higher trims add larger displays, leather, navigation, premium audio, and more upscale cabin materials.
- Powertrain: You can choose a 3.6-liter V6 or a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 paired with an 8-speed automatic. The V6 is the more efficient choice, while the V8 brings stronger towing and more effortless acceleration.
- Safety package: Available driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control with stop, advanced brake assist, blind-spot monitoring with cross-path detection, forward-collision warning with active braking, ParkSense rear park assist and rear backup camera, and LaneSense lane-departure warning. Some of these features are optional rather than standard, so check the exact build carefully.
- Infotainment: Uconnect comes with either a 5.0-inch or 8.4-inch touchscreen, and higher trims can add navigation, a premium Alpine system, and a BeatsAudio setup. There is no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatibility.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 AWD is rated 18/25 mpg, and the Hemi V8 is rated 14/22 mpg. The V8’s stronger performance comes with a noticeable fuel-economy penalty.
Which 2017 Dodge Durango trim should I buy?
The 2017 Dodge Durango is offered in 4 trim levels: SXT, GT, Citadel, and R/T.
Here's the short version:
- SXT: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Durango’s core space and capability at the lowest price. It’s the trim to consider if you want the SUV’s utility first and can live without the bigger screen, extra seating flexibility, and premium features found higher up.
- GT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a larger 8.4-inch Uconnect screen, power-adjustable front seats, and useful parking aids without jumping all the way to the pricier luxury-oriented trims. If you want the sweet spot between price and equipment, this is the one to start with.
- Citadel: This trim is for you if you want the most upscale Durango experience short of the performance model. It adds standard ventilated Nappa leather seats, a sunroof, navigation, and an Alpine premium audio system, and it can be paired with the V8 for stronger towing.
- R/T: Choose this if you want the Durango’s performance-focused personality. It comes only with the Hemi V8 and adds sport suspension, performance steering, HD brakes, and unique interior touches, so it’s the right pick if driving feel matters more than value.
The safety package is strongest when you verify which driver-assistance options are actually installed, since several of the most useful features are optional rather than standard.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Dodge Durango?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient and compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,318 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.31% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,760.15, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Dodge Durango's resale value?
The current average of $14,965 sits slightly below last year's $16,145.
That price movement suggests the Durango has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help you if you buy now and hold the vehicle for a while. If you keep mileage reasonable and maintain it well, you may be better positioned than a buyer who paid closer to the prior-year average. Stronger trims and well-kept examples should also be easier to move later because the Durango’s capability and family-friendly layout remain appealing.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.56/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Dodge Durango safe?
The 2017 Durango earns four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in side crash testing from NHTSA.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Every Durango includes multiple airbags, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, rain brake support, ready alert braking, and trailer-sway control. Available driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control with stop, advanced brake assist, blind-spot monitoring with cross-path detection, forward-collision warning with active braking, ParkSense rear park assist and rear backup camera, and LaneSense lane-departure warning.
A key caveat is that the model’s crash-test results are not especially strong for a family SUV, and some of the most useful safety technologies are optional rather than standard.
Should I buy a 2017 Dodge Durango or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 28.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.31% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.56/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It blends strong towing ability with a family-friendly cabin and a rugged, well-equipped character.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $13,872, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $14,965 average.
- It adds fresh styling updates and a sportier driving mode.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $17,918, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $14,965 average.
- It adds Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a more modern tech setup.
The bottom line: The 2017 is the right pick if you want a capable, family-sized SUV at a softened market price and you’re willing to verify condition carefully. If your budget is tighter, the 2016 can save you money; if you want newer tech and can spend more, the 2018 is the better upgrade path.
