What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Dodge Durango?

At 61.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with added towing use. Pay close attention to body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the cabin electronics and safety features work as expected. If you want the best value, focus on a clean, well-maintained example rather than chasing the lowest sticker price.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Durango offers four trim levels—SXT, GT, Citadel, and R/T. The base SXT is the most stripped-down choice, with a 5.0-inch screen, 6-speaker audio, and seating for five, while the GT adds an 8.4-inch screen, power front seats, ParkSense rear park-assist, and a rear backup camera. The Citadel brings a more upscale feel with ventilated Nappa leather, navigation, and premium audio, while the R/T is the performance-oriented choice with sport suspension, HD brakes, and unique interior treatments.
• Powertrain: You can choose a 3.6-liter V6 or a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The V6 is capable and can tow up to 6,200 pounds, while the V8 delivers stronger acceleration and up to 7,400 pounds of towing.
• Safety package: Every Durango includes multiple airbags, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, rain brake support, ready alert braking, and trailer-sway control. Available driver aids include adaptive cruise control with stop, advanced brake assist, blind-spot monitoring with cross-path detection, forward-collision warning with active braking, ParkSense rear park assist and rear backup camera, and LaneSense lane-departure warning.
• Infotainment: Uconnect comes with either a 5.0-inch or 8.4-inch touchscreen, plus a standard 6-speaker audio system, SD card slot, USB port, auxiliary jack, and two 12-volt outlets. Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto are not included.
• Fuel efficiency: The V6 AWD is rated 18/25 mpg, and the Hemi V8 is rated 14/22 mpg.

Which 2017 Dodge Durango trim should I buy?

The 2017 Dodge Durango is offered in 4 trim levels: SXT, GT, Citadel, and R/T.

Here's the short version:

• SXT: This is the value-focused starting point, but it is also the most basic version. You get the core Durango utility and a lower entry price, but the 5-passenger layout and smaller 5.0-inch screen make it the least equipped choice. It makes sense if you want the Durango’s size and capability without paying for extras.
• GT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the 8.4-inch screen, power front seats, ParkSense rear park-assist, and a rear backup camera without jumping all the way to luxury pricing. If you want the most balanced mix of comfort, convenience, and price, this is the trim to target.
• Citadel: Choose this if you want the most upscale Durango experience short of the performance model. It adds ventilated Nappa leather, navigation, premium audio, and available advanced driver aids, making it the right pick if comfort and features matter more than price.
• R/T: This is the performance trim, with the Hemi V8, sport suspension, and HD brakes. It suits you if you want the strongest driving character and don’t mind paying more for it.

The safety-package trim note is simple: several of the most desirable driver-assistance features are optional rather than standard, so check each listing carefully.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Dodge Durango?

• Deal availability: 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,296 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.15% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 61.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $14,541, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Dodge Durango's resale value?

The current average of $14,541 sits slightly below last year's $15,661.

That softer pricing can help you buy more affordably now, but it also means future resale gains may be limited unless you choose a well-kept example. If you plan to sell later, condition and equipment will matter a lot, especially because shoppers will compare your Durango against similarly priced alternatives. A clean history and strong maintenance record should help your listing stand out when it’s time to move on.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Available safety tech includes adaptive cruise control with stop, advanced brake assist, blind-spot monitoring with cross-path detection, forward-collision warning with active braking, ParkSense rear park assist and rear backup camera, and LaneSense lane-departure warning. The crash-test results are a meaningful caution if safety is your top priority, so you should pay close attention to the available driver-assistance equipment on any used example you consider.

Should I buy a 2017 Dodge Durango or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 61.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.15% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It balances family space, towing strength, and a rugged character without chasing luxury polish.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $13,512, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $14,541 average.
• It adds fresh wheels, more color choices, and a Sport mode that sharpens responses.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $17,504, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $14,541 average.
• It adds Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a standard reversing camera.

The bottom line: The 2017 is the right pick if you want a well-rounded Durango with strong value and broad capability. If price is your main concern, the 2016 can save you money; if you want newer tech, the 2018 is the better step up.
