CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Dodge Durango
overall

Summary
With 1,242 currently listed for sale and an average price of $14,793.00, 29.5% of 2017 Dodge Durangos for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Dodge Durango 4.56 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
61.0% of 2017 Durango models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Dodge Durango stands out as a full-size SUV that can carry up to 7 passengers while still offering serious towing ability. It can tow up to 7,400 pounds, and it is described as serving family-hauling duty with a crossover-like ride and the amenities a busy family needs to get through the day. That combination gives it a broad appeal: it is built to handle practical daily use, but it also brings the kind of capability that helps it feel more substantial than many family-oriented SUVs.
Inside, the 2017 Durango is notable for how its trims can move the cabin from basic to beautiful. Even at the top of the range, though, it is not presented as a refined luxury SUV; instead, it keeps a rugged character that fits the Dodge brand. That emphasis on function over polish can be part of the appeal for buyers who want an SUV that feels well equipped without trying too hard to be fancy. It can be outfitted with leather seats and rear-seat entertainment, and it is described as able to provide the features needed to keep kids entertained and adults comfortable.

Itโs a great vehicle. I love the looks. I love the tow capacity: I love the features and room. The 3.6/8 speed is a great combo. Butโฆ the small offset crash rating is a disaster. And as a dad of teens it made me cross it off my list. Why hasnโt dodge addresses this? Even mitigated it?

If you find a listing below $14,772.59, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Dodge Durango a good car?
Yes โ the 2017 Dodge Durango earns a 4.56/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating.
The model scores 8/10 across Performance, Form and function, and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its powerful V8 engine, spacious interior, and smooth ride. The overview also points to a three-row SUV that can carry up to 7 passengers and tow up to 7,400 pounds, which fits your needs if you want family hauling with real capability. That mix makes it appealing if you want an SUV that feels practical in daily use but still brings extra muscle and utility.
The market also shows 29.9% good or great deals, which suggests there are worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Dodge Durango reliable?
Owners rate it 4.56/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a vehicle that many drivers find dependable and enjoyable to live with over time, especially because of its strong powertrain, spacious cabin, and smooth ride. The expert notes also emphasize that it feels confident and controlled on the road, with solid braking and little road noise, which supports the sense that it can be a trouble-free daily companion when maintained properly. The ownership coverage adds a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain limited warranty, which is a useful cushion for used buyers.
For a used purchase, the main long-term risk is that higher-mileage examples may have seen hard family or towing use, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Dodge Durango?
At 62.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents โ history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a higher-trim or higher-mileage example. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven tire wear, brake condition, and evidence of heavy towing or family-duty wear. Because this SUV can be optioned heavily, make sure the features you expect are actually present and functioning.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SXT is the most stripped-down version, with seating for five and a 5.0-inch screen, while higher trims add more comfort and convenience features. The GT brings an 8.4-inch screen, power-adjustable front seats, and rear park assist, and the Citadel adds ventilated Nappa leather, a sunroof, navigation, and premium audio.
- Powertrain: You can choose a 3.6-liter V6 or a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The V6 is the efficiency-minded choice, while the V8 delivers stronger towing and more effortless acceleration.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes multiple airbags, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, rain brake support, ready alert braking, and trailer-sway control. Available driver aids include adaptive cruise control with stop, advanced brake assist, blind-spot monitoring with cross-path detection, forward-collision warning with active braking, ParkSense rear park assist and rear backup camera, and LaneSense lane-departure warning.
- Infotainment: Uconnect comes with either a 5.0-inch or 8.4-inch touchscreen, and higher trims can add navigation, SiriusXM services, Alpine audio, and BeatsAudio. There is no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatibility.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 AWD is rated 18/25 mpg, while the Hemi V8 is rated 14/22 mpg. The V8 is the thirstier choice, especially if you plan to tow or drive long family road trips.
Which 2017 Dodge Durango trim should I buy?
The 2017 Dodge Durango is offered in 4 trim levels: SXT, GT, Citadel, and R/T.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SXT is the most basic choice, and it lacks the larger touchscreen, power front seats, and rear park-assist features found higher up the range. It also comes only with seating for five, which is a meaningful limitation if you need maximum passenger capacity.
- Sweet-spot trim: The GT is the best value pick because it adds the 8.4-inch screen, power-adjustable front seats, rear backup camera, and ParkSense rear park-assist system without jumping all the way to the pricier luxury-oriented trims.
- Premium/top trim: The Citadel is the most upscale mainstream choice, with ventilated Nappa leather, navigation, a sunroof, and premium Alpine audio. It is the trim to target if you want the most comfort and tech without moving into the performance-focused R/T.
- Off-road trim: The R/T is the performance-oriented choice, not the one most daily drivers should prioritize. Its sport suspension and lower ride height make it more about handling than everyday comfort or value.
The safety-package note to keep in mind is that several advanced driver-assistance features remain optional rather than standard on higher trims.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Dodge Durango?
The market looks selective rather than overheated, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.
- Deal availability: 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,241 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.50% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,772.59, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Dodge Durango's resale value?
The current average of $14,854 sits slightly below last year's $16,412.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you can reduce the impact of that depreciation. Higher-demand trims and well-kept examples should hold up better than neglected ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.56/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Dodge Durango safe?
The 2017 Dodge Durango earns four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in side crash testing from NHTSA.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes multiple airbags, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, rain brake support, ready alert braking, and trailer-sway control. Available driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control with stop, advanced brake assist, blind-spot monitoring with cross-path detection, forward-collision warning with active braking, ParkSense rear park assist and rear backup camera, and LaneSense lane-departure warning.
A key caveat is that the model year was not tested by IIHS, and the safety discussion also notes that some advanced features are optional rather than standard.
Should I buy a 2017 Dodge Durango or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents โ history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.50% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.56/5 โ a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines three-row utility with strong towing ability and a rugged, family-friendly character.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $13,748, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $14,854 average.
- It adds fresh wheels, more exterior colors, and a Sport driving mode.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $17,842, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $14,854 average.
- It adds Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a standard reversing camera, and a new 7-inch touchscreen.
The bottom line: The 2017 is the right pick if you want the strongest balance of price, capability, and available features. If your priority is saving money, the 2016 is the better value play. If you want newer tech and can spend more, the 2018 is the smarter upgrade path.
