Is the 2017 Dodge Challenger a good car?

Yes — the 4.64/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.5/10. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise the Challenger’s powerful performance, comfort, stylish design, and daily-driving capability. The overview also frames it as a car for buyers who want a distinctive retro muscle-car personality rather than something that blends in.

That makes it a strong fit if you want a coupe with attitude, stable handling, and a cabin that leans into the old-school theme. 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2017 Dodge Challenger reliable?

Owners rate it 4.64/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with praise for the car’s daily-driving capability and stable handling. The expert drive notes also describe the Challenger GT as incredibly silent and damped at highway speeds or around town, which supports the sense that it can be easy to live with over time.

The GT’s fuel economy is also a practical plus, with the expert drive noting around 22 mpg over 500 miles and an EPA estimate of 18 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the Challenger’s age, performance focus, and premium-fuel appetite can make upkeep and operating costs more demanding than the ownership experience suggests at first glance.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Dodge Challenger?

At 57.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or shows uneven panel gaps, tire wear, or warning lights. Focus on condition first, because the Challenger’s appeal depends heavily on how well it has been maintained and whether its equipment still works as intended.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The GT adds all-wheel drive for buyers who want calmer year-round manners, while the cabin mixes retro gauges with modern screens and controls. Base-trim buyers should pay close attention to feature gaps, since the more richly equipped versions add a lot of the Challenger’s everyday appeal.
• Powertrain: The GT uses a 3.6-liter V6 with 305 horsepower and 268 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic. It also includes a customizable sport mode and paddle shifters, and the AWD system can send up to 38 percent of power to the front axle when needed.
• Safety package: The Challenger includes a reversing camera, while lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and forward-collision alert are optional. Many driver-assist features are not standard, so trim and option content matter.
• Infotainment: The Uconnect 8.4 system comes standard on the GT with navigation, real-time traffic, weather alerts, and onboard apps. The tech setup also includes Performance Pages, and the GT can be equipped with auto high beams, rain-sensing wipers, remote start, passive entry with push-button start, and cooled front seats.
• Fuel efficiency: The GT is rated at 18 mpg city and 27 mpg highway, and the expert drive recorded around 22 mpg over 500 miles.

Which 2017 Dodge Challenger trim should I buy?

The 2017 Dodge Challenger is offered in 14 trim levels: SXT, GT, R/T, R/T Shaker, R/T Scat Pack, R/T Scat Pack Shaker, T/A, T/A 392, SRT 392, SRT Hellcat, SRT Hellcat Widebody, SRT Demon, and other trims referenced in the model’s lineup.

Here's the short version:

• SXT: This is the entry point if you want the Challenger’s style at the lowest starting price, but you should expect the fewest features and the least equipment-rich experience.
• GT: This is the best-value choice if you want the most usable all-around package, because it adds AWD, the 3.6-liter V6, and a strong mix of comfort and tech features.
• R/T: Choose this if you want a V8 step-up and are willing to trade some efficiency for more muscle-car character.
• R/T Shaker: Pick this if the shaker hood and added visual drama matter to you, since it leans harder into the Challenger’s retro personality.
• R/T Scat Pack: This is for buyers who want a more serious performance feel and are willing to pay for it.
• R/T Scat Pack Shaker: Choose this if you want the Scat Pack’s performance with extra visual flair.
• T/A: This suits you if you want a more distinctive appearance and a sportier presentation.
• T/A 392: This is the stronger choice if you want the T/A look with more performance hardware.
• SRT 392: Pick this if you want a higher-performance Challenger with a more serious enthusiast focus.
• SRT Hellcat: This is the choice for maximum straight-line drama and the most extreme performance character.
• SRT Hellcat Widebody: Choose this if you want the Hellcat experience with a broader, more aggressive stance.
• SRT Demon: This is the most extreme performance option in the lineup and is for buyers who want the most outrageous version of the Challenger.

The safety content also notes that many driver-assist features are optional, so check each car’s equipment list carefully before you buy.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Dodge Challenger?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,428 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.34% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 57.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $20,190, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Dodge Challenger's resale value?

The current average of $20,641 sits slightly below last year's $21,578.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper resale upside if you plan to sell soon. If you buy at the right price and keep the car in strong condition, you can reduce the impact of that softer trend.

The Challenger’s distinctive styling and broad enthusiast appeal should help it stay relevant with shoppers who want a retro muscle coupe. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.64/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Dodge Challenger safe?

The 2017 Dodge Challenger earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, though it scored four stars in the frontal crash rating. It received the highest Good rating in only the moderate front overlap and side crash tests, while the IIHS rated it Marginal on the small front overlap test and Acceptable on the roof strength and headrest/seat tests.

It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.

The Challenger includes the usual airbags and a standard reversing camera. Lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and forward-collision alert are available, but many driver-assistance features are optional rather than standard. The safety testing also highlights a notable weak spot in the small front overlap result, so you should pay close attention to crash history and repair quality on any used example.

Should I buy a 2017 Dodge Challenger or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 28.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 57.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.34% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.64/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 adds the new GT trim with AWD, which broadens the Challenger’s appeal for year-round use.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $24,347, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $20,641 average.
• It emphasizes authentic retro muscle-car character with a spacious interior and strong everyday usability.

The 2017 is the better primary choice if you want the strongest mix of price, availability, and year-round usability. If you are more price-sensitive and find a well-kept 2016 at a compelling number, it can still make sense as long as condition and equipment line up with your priorities.
