Is the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze a good car?

Generally — the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze earns a 4.4/5 user rating and a 6.7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 8/10.

Owners consistently praise its comfort, handling, excellent gas mileage, tech features, and modern design. That lines up with the Cruze’s role as a useful daily driver, especially if you want a compact car that adds hatchback practicality and a more crossover-like sense of utility. The market also shows 27.0% good or great deals, which suggests there are still attractive buys if you shop carefully.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze reliable?

Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a car that many people find dependable for everyday use, with comfort and efficiency coming through as recurring strengths. The expert drive notes also frame it as a practical, well-rounded compact that can handle real-world commuting without much drama. Chevrolet’s Teen Driver mode adds a family-friendly ownership perk, and the overall picture is one of a car you can count on for routine use.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that some examples may have been driven hard or maintained inconsistently, so condition and service history matter.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Chevrolet Cruze?

At 52.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or multiple owners. Focus on signs of wear in the suspension, interior controls, and any tech or convenience features you plan to use every day. Because this model is often bought as a commuter, condition matters as much as mileage.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The hatchback is offered only in LT and Premier trims, and the lower trims leave out some basic equipment such as cruise control. The LT is the entry point for the hatchback, while the Premier adds more comfort and convenience features, making it the better value if you want a more complete daily driver.
• Powertrain: The Cruze uses a turbocharged 1.4-liter engine with 153 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque. It is fine for relaxed driving, but it can feel short on power for hills, merging, and passing.
• Safety package: Teen Driver is standard, and the LT can add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and rear parking sensors through the Driver Confidence Package. The Premier needs the Driver Confidence II Package for forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams.
• Infotainment: Standard Chevy MyLink uses an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Wireless charging is available, and navigation requires the Premier with the Sun and Sound with Navigation package.
• Fuel efficiency: The automatic hatchback is rated at 28 mpg city and 37 mpg highway, with a 31 mpg combined figure mentioned in expert testing. The manual is said to offer a slight 1-mpg advantage.

Which 2017 Chevrolet Cruze trim should I buy?

The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze is offered in 2 trim levels: LT and Premier.

Here's the short version:

• LT: This is the better-value starting point if you want the Cruze hatchback without jumping straight to the highest price. It brings 16-inch alloys, a 6-speaker stereo with satellite radio, LED running lights, heated mirrors, and steering-wheel audio and phone controls. If you want the Cruze’s core utility and tech without overpaying, this is the trim to target.
• Premier: This is the trim to choose if you want the most complete Cruze experience. It adds the Convenience Package as standard, plus leather, a heated steering wheel, 17-inch wheels, extra interior lighting, and more upscale touches. It is the right pick if comfort and convenience matter more than keeping the purchase price down.

For safety, the LT can add the Driver Confidence Package, while the Premier needs the Driver Confidence II Package for the full set of advanced driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Chevrolet Cruze?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop, but the best listings can still move quickly.

• Deal availability: 27.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,794 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.48% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 52.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $9,158, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze's resale value?

The current average of $9,233 sits slightly below last year's $9,566.

That softer pricing suggests the Cruze is in a buyer-friendly phase right now, which can work against future resale if you overpay today. If you buy at the right price and keep the car in strong condition, you can help protect your exit value later. The hatchback’s practicality and broad appeal should still support demand among shoppers looking for an efficient compact.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze safe?

The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze earns Good ratings from IIHS in Moderate Overlap Front and Side Impact testing, and it previously lost its five-star overall NHTSA rating with four-star scores in all tests except a five-star frontal crash test.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Chevrolet includes Teen Driver standard, and the Cruze also offers a strong set of airbags, including full-length side curtain, knee, and front and rear side airbags. The LT can add blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and rear parking sensors, while the Premier needs the Driver Confidence II Package for forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning and intervention, plus auto high beams. The main caveat is that the government rating is not class-leading, so you should pay close attention to the condition and equipment on any used example.

Should I buy a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 27.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 52.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.48% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• Chevy added a sloping rear hatch for more utility and broader appeal.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $8,225, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $9,233 average.
• It offers a fresh second-generation redesign and strong real-world practicality.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $9,888, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $9,233 average.
• It adds diesel versions for buyers who want that powertrain choice.

The bottom line: The 2017 is the right pick if you want the hatchback’s added utility and a decent mix of value, tech, and comfort. If you are price-sensitive, the 2016 is the cheaper route; if you want the broader lineup, the 2018 is worth a look.
