How much does the 2017 BMW 5 Series cost?

Prices have softened 5.10% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,108 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series a good car?

Generally — the 2017 BMW 5 Series earns a 4/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Technology and Safety.

The 2017 5 Series is presented as a thoroughly redesigned midsize luxury sedan with a fresh chassis, new engines, and updated technology. It’s aimed at you if you want a larger luxury sedan that still emphasizes efficiency and driving enjoyment, and BMW’s lighter materials help it grow in size without gaining weight.

The market also looks fairly accessible, with 31.8% of listings priced as good or great deals.

Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2017 5 Series is described as a new-generation model with a lighter chassis, updated powertrains, and a more refined driving character. Its performance notes point to strong engines, a well-sorted automatic transmission, and a car that feels more compliant over rough pavement than the previous generation.

BMW also emphasizes capability and convenience, including advanced driver-assistance tech and a broad feature set. That said, the options list can push the car far beyond its base price, so long-term ownership risk for used buyers often comes down to how heavily a specific example was optioned and maintained.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 BMW 5 Series?

At 57.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially on cars with extensive option content. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s technology and driver-assistance features all work as intended.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 530i is positioned as the no-nonsense choice, with a well-built chassis, sorted suspension, comfortable interior, and capable transmission, while higher trims add more power and luxury but can quickly inflate the price.
• Powertrain: The 530i uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, while the 540i adds a turbo inline-six with 335 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque; the four-cylinder is praised for strong torque and efficiency, but it can feel less immediate when passing at highway speeds.
• Safety package: The car offers blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep warning and intervention with side-collision avoidance, radar-controlled adaptive cruise, collision warning and intervention, pedestrian detection, traffic jam assistant, and automatic parking; some of these features are optional rather than standard.
• Infotainment: The sixth-generation iDrive system uses a touchscreen, rotary dial, steering-wheel inputs, and console controls; Apple CarPlay is available for an extra cost, and Android Auto is not available.
• Fuel efficiency: The 530i is rated at 24 mpg city and 34 mpg highway, with a combined rating of 27 mpg.

Which 2017 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?

The 2017 BMW 5 Series is offered in 3 trim levels: 530i, 540i, M550i.

Here's the short version:

• 530i: This is the best-value choice if you want the core 5 Series experience without pushing the price into luxury-car excess. You get the updated turbo four-cylinder, strong efficiency, and the balanced chassis that defines the car’s appeal.
• 540i: This is the right step up if you want noticeably stronger acceleration and a more effortless feel in passing and highway driving. It adds the turbo inline-six and is the trim to target if you want more performance without jumping all the way to the top model.
• M550i: This is the choice for you if outright speed matters most. Its twin-turbo V8 delivers the strongest performance in the range and turns the 5 Series into a much quicker luxury sedan.

The safety content says the car earns top marks from both NHTSA and IIHS, with Good scores across IIHS tests.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 BMW 5 Series?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,108 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.10% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 57.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $16,721, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 BMW 5 Series's resale value?

The current average of $16,957 sits slightly below last year's $17,868.

That decline suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy well and keep the car in strong condition, you can help protect your exit value. Higher-option examples may not always return their full cost, so condition and mileage matter a lot.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series safe?

The 2017 BMW 5 Series earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS, with Good scores in all IIHS tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The car’s safety suite includes blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep warning and intervention with side-collision avoidance, radar-controlled adaptive cruise, collision warning and intervention, pedestrian detection, traffic jam assistant, and automatic parking. Some of those systems are optional, so you should confirm the exact equipment on any used example you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2017 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 57.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.10% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It’s a thoroughly redesigned model with a new chassis, new engines, and updated technology.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $18,181, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $16,957 average.
• It adds a plug-in hybrid option that becomes the lowest-priced 5 Series in the lineup.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, redesign freshness, and strong feature content, the 2017 is the better starting point. If your priority is efficiency and you’re open to spending more, the 2018 is the better alternative.
