How much does the 2017 BMW 5 Series cost?

Prices have softened 5.21% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,117 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of used examples to compare.

Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series a good car?

Generally — the 2017 BMW 5 Series earns a 4/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating, which points to broad appeal for used luxury-sedan shoppers. It’s described as a thoroughly redesigned midsize luxury sedan with a fresh chassis, new engines, an updated iDrive interface, and innovative technologies, while also growing in size without gaining weight.

The model is framed as a larger luxury sedan that still aims to feel engineered for efficiency and driving enjoyment, with a return toward a driver’s-car character. The model scores 9/10 across Technology and Safety.

34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2017 5 Series is presented as a well-built, balanced sedan with a sorted suspension, a comfortable interior, and an intelligent automatic transmission. Its new chassis uses high-strength lightweight materials, and the updated powertrain lineup is described as increasing power without increasing consumption.

The performance notes also point to a strong turbocharged four-cylinder with nearly nonexistent turbo lag, while the cost-effectiveness commentary suggests the base car is appealing if you want a no-nonsense driver without extra complexity. If you load it up with options, long-term ownership risk rises because added complexity can increase maintenance exposure and make the car more expensive to keep.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 BMW 5 Series?

At 57.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and confirm whether the car has had any collision repairs, especially if you’re comparing similarly priced listings. A pre-purchase inspection is worth prioritizing so you can check for signs of wear, repair quality, and any issues tied to heavy option content. Focus on overall condition, because the most heavily equipped examples can be much more complex than the base car.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 530i is the value play if you want the new chassis, the updated turbo 2.0-liter engine, and the core luxury-sedan experience without piling on expensive extras. The 540i adds a turbo inline six, and the M550i brings a twin-turbo V8 for buyers who want much stronger acceleration.
• Powertrain: The 530i uses an updated turbo 2.0-liter engine with 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, while the 540i’s turbo six makes 335 hp and 332 lb-ft. The 530i is described as one of the best four-cylinder engines on the market, with nearly nonexistent turbo lag and a claimed 24 mpg city and 34 mpg highway.
• Safety package: The car offers blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep warning and intervention with side-collision avoidance, radar-controlled adaptive cruise, collision warning and intervention, pedestrian detection, traffic jam assistant, and automatic parking. The text notes that getting everything tied to the highest level of autonomy adds about $5,000 to the purchase price.
• Infotainment: The sixth-generation iDrive system is a major update, and the car can be fitted with a heads-up display, gesture control, and Apple CarPlay. Android Auto is not available.
• Fuel efficiency: The 530i is rated at 24 mpg city and 34 mpg highway, with a combined rating of 27 mpg.

Which 2017 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?

The 2017 BMW 5 Series is offered in 3 trim levels: 530i, 540i, M550i.

Here's the short version:

• 530i: This is the best-value trim if you want the redesigned chassis, the updated turbo four-cylinder, and the core luxury and tech features without pushing the price into the stratosphere. It’s the trim that best matches the car’s efficiency-minded, driver-focused mission.
• 540i: Choose this if you want a stronger straight-line punch from the turbo inline six and are willing to pay more for the extra performance.
• M550i: Pick this if you want the most power in the lineup, with the twin-turbo V8 delivering the quickest acceleration and the most serious performance character.

The safety content says the car earns top marks, including a Top Safety Pick+ rating and a five-star government safety rating.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 BMW 5 Series?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.

• Deal availability: 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,117 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.21% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 57.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $16,715, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 BMW 5 Series's resale value?

The current average of $17,030 sits slightly below last year's $17,966.

That softer pricing suggests the model has become more approachable for used buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to stay competitive on condition and equipment. Well-kept examples with desirable features should still stand out, especially if they present clean history and strong maintenance records.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series safe?

The 2017 BMW 5 Series earns a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with Good scores in all IIHS tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The car’s safety suite includes blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep warning and intervention with side-collision avoidance, radar-controlled adaptive cruise, collision warning and intervention, pedestrian detection, traffic jam assistant, and automatic parking. The text also notes that the most complete autonomous-safety setup is tied to a costly option package, so you may need to verify which systems are actually fitted on any used example you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2017 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 57.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.21% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It’s a thoroughly redesigned 5 Series with a fresh chassis, new engines, and updated iDrive.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $18,105, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $17,030 average.
• It adds a plug-in hybrid 530e, giving you a more efficiency-minded option.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, redesign freshness, and broad used-market availability, the 2017 is the stronger starting point. If your priority is a more efficiency-focused setup and you’re willing to pay more, the 2018 is worth a look.
