Used 2016 Volkswagen Passat for Sale nearProvidence, RI

How much does the 2016 Volkswagen Passat cost?

Prices have softened 4.46% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 841 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment.

Is the 2016 Volkswagen Passat a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Volkswagen Passat earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Safety.

It comes across as a practical midsize family sedan that prioritizes everyday usefulness over flash, and the expert review frames it as a strong value if you look past its conservative styling and reputation headwinds. That makes it a sensible fit if you want a roomy, straightforward sedan rather than something attention-grabbing.

31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities in the market.

Is the 2016 Volkswagen Passat reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The expert review points to average reliability predictions, but it also notes that owners have consistently complained mostly about infotainment systems rather than mechanical issues. The performance write-up also emphasizes that the car feels more powerful than its numbers suggest, which supports the idea that the drivetrain is a strong point in everyday use.

The main long-term ownership risk for used buyers is that reputation and electronics concerns may matter more than the underlying mechanical experience.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Volkswagen Passat?

At 55.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on body repairs, electronics, and how the car drives at low speeds and on rough pavement. Because the Passat’s appeal depends heavily on condition and equipment mix, you’ll want to confirm that the features you care about are actually present on the trim you’re considering.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S starts with the smallest 5-inch screen, while SE, SEL, and SEL Premium move to a 6.3-inch display and add more convenience and safety content. The R-Line is styled differently, but it does not get the same safety-tech availability as the better-equipped trims.
• Powertrain: Most cars use a turbocharged 1.8-liter 4-cylinder with 170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, and the review says it feels stronger than the numbers suggest. The optional V6 is reserved for the top SEL Premium trim.
• Safety package: The Passat includes a standard Automatic Post-Collision Braking system and a reversing camera. SE and higher trims add forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, while blind-spot warning with lane-change alert and rear cross-traffic alert is standard on SEL and SEL Premium.
• Infotainment: The S and R-Line use a 5-inch touchscreen, while SE, SEL, and SEL Premium get a 6.3-inch screen. App-Connect brings Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and MirrorLink, and Car-Net is available with the larger system.
• Fuel efficiency: The 1.8-liter engine is rated at 29 mpg in combined driving, and the review reports 29.7 mpg on a test loop.

Which 2016 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?

The 2016 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, R-Line, SEL Premium V6.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the least expensive way into the Passat, but it also has the smallest 5-inch infotainment screen and the fewest convenience features. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and can live without the richer tech and safety content found higher up.
• SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the 6.3-inch screen, App-Connect, adaptive cruise control, and access to key safety upgrades. It strikes the best balance of price, equipment, and everyday usefulness.
• R-Line: Choose this if you care most about the sport-themed appearance and the dark gray 19-inch wheels. Just know that the review specifically calls out safety-tech limitations on this trim.
• SEL Premium V6: This is the most fully equipped version, with the V6 engine, premium audio, parking sensors, and Parking Steering Assistant. It suits you best if you want the top content and are willing to pay for it.

The safety-package lineup is strongest on SE, SEL, and SEL Premium, while the R-Line misses some of the key driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Volkswagen Passat?

• Deal availability: 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 841 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.46% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 55.8% of listings are accident-free.

What is the 2016 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?

The current average of $9,281 sits slightly below last year's $9,714.

That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend more on condition, mileage, and equipment than on broad market momentum.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Volkswagen Passat safe?

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Volkswagen made forward-structure changes for 2016, and the car includes a standard Automatic Post-Collision Braking system. SE, SEL, and SEL Premium trims also qualify for Top Safety Pick+ thanks to forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking, while blind-spot warning with lane-change alert and rear cross-traffic alert is standard on SEL and SEL Premium. The SEL Premium also adds lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist.

Should I buy a 2016 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 55.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.46% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Volkswagen’s 2016 updates bring stronger safety packaging and useful smartphone connectivity.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $10,525, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $9,281 average.
• It adds standard blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, and App-Connect across more trims.

The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2016 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong safety and solid equipment. If you’re willing to spend more for broader standard safety and smartphone features, the 2017 is the cleaner upgrade path.
