Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota Sienna stands out as a minivan that already offered an impressive suite of technology, with Siri Eyes Free adding voice activation for iPhone users. That feature gives the Sienna extra utility and a bit of added safety, making it especially appealing to drivers who want family-hauling practicality without giving up modern convenience.
Beyond that tech upgrade, the Sienna’s appeal comes from its long-running reputation as a leader in the minivan segment. The available owner feedback reinforces that image, pointing to comfort, spaciousness, and a wide variety of features as major strengths. Some drivers also praised the value and more upscale feel of the limited edition models, especially the sound system and interior design.
There are a couple of tradeoffs to keep in mind. Some owners noted that engine noise can be noticeable during acceleration, and getting in and out of the car seats may be challenging for some. Even so, the 2016 Toyota Sienna remains distinctive for combining family-friendly space with a strong feature set and a useful voice-control upgrade.

The features are great especially the right blind spot display. This car is a great value. The only thing missing is leather seats. I can’t compare it to any other models since this one is a special edition.

Reviewed a 2016 Toyota Sienna on Oct 14, 2020
We looked at the Honda and Toyota minivans. We ended up purchasing the Sienna. It is a great vehicle, great value, very comfortable. Prior to purchasing the vehicle the two negative reviews I found were the engine is loud when accelerating and the car seats are hard to get in and out. I did not even notice the engine noise so that is a non-issue for me but the car seats were a little tricky. We leave our car seats in for extended periods of time (only take out to clean) so its really not a big deal. If we took them out every day I could see how this would be annoying but the fact that they essentially live in the car I really dont care. All the extra features are really nice too, automatic doors with buttons on the key fob, build in sun screens, electronics are really nice and responsive, the interior space and head room is massive. We really enjoy this vehicle and will have it for a long time.

Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Toyota Sienna earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise its comfort, spaciousness, and wide variety of features. The limited edition models also get credit for their upscale feel, especially the sound system and interior design. In practical terms, that lines up well with the Sienna’s family-hauling mission and its emphasis on convenience and everyday usability.
The model’s tech-forward setup, including Siri Eyes Free, adds useful voice control for iPhone users, which fits shoppers who want minivan practicality without giving up modern convenience. With 29.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with drivers highlighting comfort, spaciousness, and value over the long term. The expert review also describes the Sienna as a long-running class leader for reliability, and notes that it has historically beaten the Honda Odyssey in nearly every year.
The powertrain is shared across the lineup, which can help simplify ownership expectations, and the expert review says the 6-speed automatic delivers solid efficiency for the class. The cost-effectiveness notes also mention that the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that condition and maintenance history matter more than reputation alone, especially on higher-mileage examples.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Sienna?
At 54.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are comparing similarly priced examples. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven wear, and any issues that could affect family use, since the Sienna’s appeal depends heavily on comfort, space, and convenience features.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base L trim already includes automatic headlights, windshield-wiper heaters, tri-zone automatic climate control, a rear-view camera in a 6.1-inch touchscreen, and Siri Eyes Free, while the LE adds heated side mirrors, power-sliding doors, an 8-way power driver’s seat, an upgraded stereo, and a 7-inch touchscreen. The SE adds a stiffer suspension, tighter steering, 19-inch wheels, leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a power liftgate, while the Limited brings premium leather, navigation, parking sensors, and a JBL audio system.
- Powertrain: Every Sienna uses a 3.5-liter V6 with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The setup makes 266 hp and 245 lb-ft of torque, with FWD versions rated at 18 mpg city/25 highway and 21 mpg combined, while AWD drops to 16/23 and 19 combined.
- Safety package: Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning are available through packages or standalone options. The Advanced Technology package is offered on FWD Siennas, while AWD versions do not get it.
- Infotainment: Base models get a 6.1-inch touchscreen with Siri Eyes Free, while higher trims move to a 7-inch touchscreen with enhanced connectivity. Rear-seat entertainment is a major upgrade, and the system with Driver Easy Speak is a standout for families.
- Fuel efficiency: FWD versions are rated at 18 mpg city/25 highway and 21 mpg combined, while AWD versions are rated at 16/23 and 19 combined.
Which 2016 Toyota Sienna trim should I buy?
The 2016 Toyota Sienna is offered in 6 trim levels: L, LE, SE, SE Premium, XLE, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the value play if you want the essentials without stretching the budget. You still get a rear-view camera, tri-zone climate control, Siri Eyes Free, and a long list of standard features, so it covers the basics well.
- LE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the most useful everyday upgrades, including power-sliding doors, an 8-way power driver’s seat, a better stereo, and a larger touchscreen.
- SE: Choose this if you want the firmer suspension and more upscale sport-oriented touches, plus leather upholstery, heated front seats, and a power liftgate.
- SE Premium: This is the family-tech upgrade, adding blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear-seat entertainment, HDMI and SD inputs, dual 120-volt power supplies, navigation, and enhanced smartphone integration.
- XLE: Pick this if you want comfort and convenience without the SE’s sportier tuning. It adds fake wood trim, a power passenger seat, power rear quarter windows, and keyless entry and ignition.
- Limited: This is the luxury-focused choice, with premium leather, navigation, parking sensors front and back, a heated steering wheel, auto power-folding mirrors, and a 10-speaker JBL audio system.
The safety-package note to keep in mind is that the Advanced Technology package is available only on FWD Siennas, and the AWD versions miss out on it.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Sienna?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile deals.
- Deal availability: 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,198 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.32% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 54.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,192.39, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Toyota Sienna's resale value?
The current average of $17,499 sits slightly below last year's $17,734.
That mild decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now if you plan to keep the vehicle for several years. For a future seller, the current pricing trend is still relatively stable rather than sharply falling, which is a better setup than a steep depreciation slide.
The Sienna’s strong reputation for comfort, features, and long-term satisfaction should help support demand when you eventually resell. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment and clean history should remain easier to move than neglected ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Toyota Sienna safe?
Both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Sienna their top overall scores, though the NHTSA frontal crash test and the IIHS small overlap frontal-crash test received the second-highest ratings.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The available safety equipment includes traction and stability control, a full suite of airbags including driver’s knee and curtain-length coverage, blind-spot monitoring, cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise, and forward-collision warning. The expert review also notes that the Sienna’s stopping distance is middle-of-the-pack for minivans.
One caveat is that the frontal crash result and the small overlap frontal-crash result were not the top marks, so you should pay attention to trim and option content if safety equipment matters most to you.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Sienna or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.32% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2016 adds Siri Eyes Free, giving you useful voice control and a bit of extra convenience.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $15,513, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $17,499 average.
- It is the best version of the Sienna yet, with broad improvements and a stronger safety focus.
The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced shopping target, the 2016 is the stronger pick because it combines a softer price trend, strong owner satisfaction, and useful tech. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the better value path, especially if you find one in excellent condition.
