CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Toyota RAV4

Summary
With 219 currently listed for sale near Richmond, VA and an average price of $17,341, 44.3% of 2016 Toyota RAV4s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Toyota RAV4 4.62 / 5 stars.
78.5% of 2016 RAV4 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota RAV4 stands out as a practical compact SUV that had already become a familiar benchmark in the segment, and this model year adds meaningful updates without abandoning the formula. It brought updated styling with LED exterior lighting and a redesigned front end, along with more sound insulation and refreshed interior styling. Toyota also expanded the active-safety equipment, making automatic emergency braking standard and offering features such as lane departure warnings, rear cross traffic alerts, and adaptive cruise control with lane centering. For buyers who want a small crossover that feels well equipped and easy to live with, those changes make the 2016 RAV4 especially appealing.
It also benefits from the broader strengths that define the RAV4 name: strong practicality, a reputation for reliability, and a cabin that makes efficient use of space. The 2016 hybrid is a particular highlight, pairing a 150-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder with a trio of electric motors for 194 system horsepower and standard all-wheel drive, while returning up to 32 mpg combined. At the same time, the RAV4 is not trying to be the most exciting SUV in its class. The source notes that it is not very exciting to drive and can be noisy inside, and owners also mention that the ride can feel a bit rougher than some rivals.

I like the way they handle on the open road. The ride is smooth and the accommodations are extremely comfortable. The built in back parking camera is a great feature that comes in handy for numerous driving needs. Mileage isnt bad. The construction is solid. If you have a family and want to keep them protected, I encourage you to do some independent research on the chasis design and the safety features that Toyota puts into their vehicles. I will stick to Toyotas because of everything that goes into them at every level.

How much does the 2016 Toyota RAV4 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,177 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,409.86 |
| Year-Round High | $16,504.76 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,152 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +0.16% |
Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
There are 2,389 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $15,409.86, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Toyota RAV4 earns a 4.62/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners repeatedly praise its reliability, fuel efficiency, and comfortable ride, and safety features also come through as a major strength. For you, that makes it a sensible pick if you want a practical compact SUV with everyday usability and peace of mind. With 31.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2016 Toyota RAV4 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also emphasizes reliability, dependable day-to-day use, and a trouble-free ownership experience. That kind of consistency matters if you want a used SUV you can count on for commuting, errands, and longer-term ownership. For used buyers, the main risk is paying for a vehicle with hidden wear, so condition and maintenance history should still guide your decision.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota RAV4?
At 52.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from those with accident records. After that, prioritize a thorough inspection of body panels, alignment, tires, and interior wear so you can judge whether the vehicle’s condition matches the asking price. Because this model is popular, the best buys are usually the ones with clean history and strong overall presentation.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota RAV4?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can be selective without expecting deep discounts across the board.
- Deal availability: 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,389 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 52.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,409.86, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Toyota RAV4's resale value?
The current average of $16,177 sits slightly above last year's $16,152.
That small increase suggests the market has stayed stable, which is helpful if you plan to sell later. You are not looking at a vehicle whose value is swinging sharply, so pricing should remain relatively predictable. Strong demand for practical compact SUVs can also help support a healthier resale position over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota RAV4 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 52.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $14,882, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $16,177 average.
- It offers practical space and efficiency for everyday use.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger overall market balance, the 2016 is the better starting point because it combines stable pricing, solid owner satisfaction, and decent deal availability. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2015 is the more budget-friendly path and still delivers the core RAV4 strengths that matter most for daily driving.
