CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Toyota Highlander

Summary
With 1,941 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,063, 34.1% of 2016 Toyota Highlander listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Toyota Highlander 4.93 / 5 stars.
57.5% of 2016 Toyota Highlander listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Toyota Highlander stands out as a comfortable, practical midsize SUV with a strong reputation for reliability and everyday usefulness. It offers a smooth ride, upscale styling, and a versatile cabin, which helps explain why it appeals to families who want something easy to live with rather than especially sporty. Owners also tend to praise its comfort, feature content, and the available V6’s strong performance.
For this generation, the Highlander comes with gas and hybrid powertrains, and front-wheel drive is standard with all-wheel drive optional. The gas version used a 3.5-liter V6 with 295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque, while the hybrid combined a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor for 243 system horsepower. It also brings useful everyday equipment such as an 8-inch touchscreen, USB inputs, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and Toyota Safety Sense, along with up to 84.3 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats folded down. Those strengths make it a well-rounded choice, though it is still not especially exciting to drive, and its steering is described as numb and uncommunicative.

Has all the bells and whistles important to a grandmother hauling grandkids to ballgames and everything in between. Smooth as a cadillac ride, great power, and I love the auto liftgate and back up camera. Third row seats are handy to have and fold down flat. Toyota has a great reputation for lasting a long time, and I like to keep my cars many years. Drove a GMC Acadia prior to this car, and I prefer the Toyota.

Coming from a 13 Tucson that blew up on us without warning, this 2016 Toyota Highlander Limited is absolutely stunning. We are very pleased with the fit and finish on the Limited trim, the features are amazing, every single option. It rides so smooth and so quiet, has great power, great fuel economy. It has sharp lines outside, looks great inside, Toyota really did a great job with this vehicle. We are proud to be new members of the Toyota family. We hope for decades of good ownership within Toyota.

Is the 2016 Toyota Highlander a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Toyota Highlander earns a 4.93/5 user rating, which points to very strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its comfort, reliability, and feature content, and they also highlight the smooth ride and strong V6 performance. That fits especially well if you want a practical, family-friendly midsize SUV that is easy to live with rather than especially sporty. With 34.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Toyota Highlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.93/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback repeatedly emphasizes reliability, and the review summary also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience. The same feedback highlights comfort and the strong V6, which suggests the vehicle’s appeal goes beyond just basic durability. For used buyers, that usually means lower long-term ownership risk if you choose a well-kept example with clean records.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Highlander?
At 57.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from those with prior damage. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially on body panels, alignment, and signs of uneven wear that can hint at past repairs. Focus on overall condition and maintenance records, since a well-kept Highlander is more likely to deliver the comfort and reliability buyers expect.

What is the 2016 Toyota Highlander's resale value?
The current average of $18,068 sits slightly below last year's $18,809.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. The Highlander’s strong owner satisfaction helps support demand, especially among shoppers who value comfort and reliability over flash. If you maintain it well and keep records, you should be in a better position to protect value when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.93/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 34.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.94% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.93/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $20,030, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $18,068 average.
- It adds refreshed styling and standard Toyota Safety Sense.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2016 is the stronger starting point because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer feel and added standard safety equipment, the 2017 is the better secondary path.
