Drivers repeatedly describe it as reliable, dependable, and long-lasting, with many saying they can count on it for power, towing, and everyday use. The expert evaluation also emphasizes its rugged, purpose-built nature and its ability to handle rough terrain with confidence.

If you buy used, your main long-term risk is paying a premium for a truck that may have seen hard use, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota 4Runner?

At 57.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used off-road or for towing. Focus on signs of frame, suspension, and underbody wear, along with any evidence of uneven maintenance or accident repair.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Trail Premium trim adds useful off-road-oriented equipment such as stock skid plates and the kinetic dynamic suspension system, while the base setup leaves you with fewer of those capability-focused extras.
• Powertrain: The 4.0-liter V6 makes 270 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque, and the truck is tuned more for obstacle clearance than quick acceleration.
• Safety package: The 4Runner includes stability and traction control, 4-wheel ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist, plus side knee and full-length curtain airbags.
• Infotainment: The upgraded Entune system adds cell-phone navigation, and the backup camera is especially helpful when reversing off-road.
• Fuel efficiency: It returns 17 mpg city/21 highway for a combined 18 mpg.

Which 2016 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 1 trim level: Trail Premium.

Here's the short version:

The Trail Premium is the one to target if you want the 4Runner’s off-road hardware and the most complete version of its rugged personality. It adds the kind of equipment that matches the truck’s mission, including the kinetic dynamic suspension system and other trail-focused features that make it the best-value choice for buyers who actually plan to use the 4Runner’s capability.

The safety content does not call out trim-specific safety-package gaps beyond the model’s overall crash-test results and standard protection equipment.

Strong owner satisfaction also helps support demand over time, since shoppers often pay more for models with a reputation for long-term satisfaction and rugged usefulness.

Should I buy a 2016 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 57.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.90% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Expert summary: It remains a true off-road SUV with useful carryover upgrades.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $21,504, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $23,869 average.
• It is a rugged off-road SUV with strong utility.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market mix of features, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2016 is the better default choice. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 is the more budget-friendly path, especially if you can find one in clean condition.

How does the 2016 Toyota 4Runner compare to the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

Our experts score the 2016 Toyota 4Runner 7.2/10 and the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6.8/10. The 4Runner is the better pick if you want a more rugged, off-road-focused SUV with stronger resale appeal. The Grand Cherokee brings more power and better fuel economy on paper, but the 4Runner’s purpose-built character and higher expert score make it the more distinctive choice for capability-first shoppers.
