CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Subaru Impreza

Summary
With 32 currently listed for sale near Phoenix, AZ and an average price of $9,662, 21.9% of 2016 Subaru Imprezas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Subaru Impreza 5 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Subaru Impreza stands out as a practical all-weather compact that still leans into Subaru’s performance-minded identity. In the buying guide, the Impreza WRX STI is described as a good blend of serious performance and day-to-day practicality, with standard all-wheel drive and a reputation for being fun on both gravel and pavement. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want something usable every day but still engaging when the road gets interesting.
What makes it distinctive is how much rally-inspired hardware it packs into a road car. The guide highlights the Driver Controlled Center Differential, which lets drivers adjust traction settings, along with Multi-mode Vehicle Dynamics Control and Subaru Intelligent Drive. It also notes a turbocharged 2.5-liter boxer four-cylinder engine, a six-speed manual transmission, Brembo performance brakes, and a suspension tuned for cornering and special stage rally action. At the same time, the car’s compromises are clear: the ride is rough, the interior materials are cheap, and many examples have been heavily used, abused, or modified.
For shoppers, that means the 2016 Subaru Impreza is most attractive if they value character and capability over comfort. The guide’s broader commentary suggests these cars can be expensive to buy and maintain, but also that clean examples are increasingly desirable. That mix of performance, practicality, and collector appeal is what gives the Impreza WRX STI its lasting distinction.

Reviewed a 2016 Subaru Impreza on Feb 16, 2024
Drives great. Lots of space. l needed an all-wheel drive for where I live. Good price because it had a rear-end collision which the dealer was upfront with. I also had a photo of the damage. It was fixed beautifully. One thing, the rear camera doesnt work and also the rear defrost. Need to get that fixed. Very low mileage, 28000 km. All in all, it is a great car for a great price.

|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $10,988 |
| Year-Round Low | $10,352 |
| Year-Round High | $11,282 |

There are 750 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2016 Subaru Impreza a good car?
Yes — 5/5 is a strong user rating for this model year, and the overview points to a practical all-weather compact with standard all-wheel drive and everyday usability. It also emphasizes a performance-minded character, with rally-inspired hardware that makes it appealing if you want something engaging as well as useful. For you, that means the 2016 Impreza makes the most sense if you value capability and character over comfort-focused refinement. 28.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Subaru Impreza reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview suggests this model can be appealing for buyers who want a car with lasting character and capability, but it also notes that many examples have been heavily used, abused, or modified. That makes condition and maintenance history especially important when you shop used. For long-term ownership, your biggest risk is likely finding a rough example rather than the concept of the car itself.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Subaru Impreza?
At 59.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether the car has been modified, tracked, or otherwise driven hard. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on wear, signs of abuse, and overall mechanical condition. Because this model can attract enthusiast ownership, you want to prioritize examples that look clean, stock, and well maintained.

What is the 2016 Subaru Impreza's resale value?
The current average of $10,988 sits slightly below last year's $11,284.
That price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price and keep the car in strong condition, you should be better positioned when it comes time to sell. Clean, well-kept examples are likely to hold more appeal than rough or heavily modified ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Subaru Impreza or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 28.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.62% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $10,305, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $10,988 average.
- It adds a more polished cabin and better interior amenities.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $12,513, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $10,988 average.
- It brings standard all-wheel drive and a more practical, affordable new-generation package.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of value, inventory, and enthusiast appeal, the 2016 is the primary year to target. If your budget is tighter, the 2015 is the better price-sensitive alternative, while the 2017 makes sense if you want to spend more for the newer-generation appeal.
