Why it stands out
The 2016 Subaru Impreza stands out as a practical all-weather compact that still leans into Subaru’s performance-minded identity. In the buying guide, the Impreza WRX STI is described as a good blend of serious performance and day-to-day practicality, with standard all-wheel drive and a reputation for being fun on both gravel and pavement. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want something usable every day but still engaging when the road gets interesting.
What makes it distinctive is how much rally-inspired hardware it packs into a road car. The guide highlights the Driver Controlled Center Differential, which lets drivers adjust traction settings, along with Multi-mode Vehicle Dynamics Control and Subaru Intelligent Drive. It also notes a turbocharged 2.5-liter boxer four-cylinder engine, a six-speed manual transmission, Brembo performance brakes, and a suspension tuned for cornering and special stage rally action. At the same time, the car’s compromises are clear: the ride is rough, the interior materials are cheap, and many examples have been heavily used, abused, or modified.
For shoppers, that means the 2016 Subaru Impreza is most attractive if they value character and capability over comfort. The guide’s broader commentary suggests these cars can be expensive to buy and maintain, but also that clean examples are increasingly desirable. That mix of performance, practicality, and collector appeal is what gives the Impreza WRX STI its lasting distinction.

Drives great. Lots of space. l needed an all-wheel drive for where I live. Good price because it had a rear-end collision which the dealer was upfront with. I also had a photo of the damage. It was fixed beautifully. One thing, the rear camera doesnt work and also the rear defrost. Need to get that fixed. Very low mileage, 28000 km. All in all, it is a great car for a great price.

How much does the 2016 Subaru Impreza cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $10,920 |
| Year-Round Low | $10,349.20 |
| Year-Round High | $11,285.35 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,273 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.13% |
Prices have softened 3.13% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 766 listings available, which suggests you have a workable amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $10,349.20, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Subaru Impreza a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction.
The 2016 Subaru Impreza stands out as a practical all-weather compact that still puts driving confidence first. Its standard all-wheel drive gives it an advantage in poor conditions, and its appeal is rooted in being an affordable, practical way to have fun behind the wheel. That balance makes it a usable daily driver with a more engaging character than many rivals.
For you, that means the Impreza makes the most sense if you want a compact car that can handle more than commuting. The tradeoff is that it is not trying to be the plushest or smoothest option in the class.
30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Subaru Impreza reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2016 Subaru Impreza is described as a practical, capable car with serious performance on gravel and pavement, which supports its reputation for dependable everyday use. Its all-wheel-drive setup also adds confidence in poor conditions, which is part of its core appeal.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure a prior owner’s use and maintenance history match the car’s capability-focused reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Subaru Impreza?
At 58.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with past damage. After that, prioritize a thorough inspection of the body, suspension, and alignment, since condition matters more when a car has had prior incidents.
You should also focus on how the car drives and feels in daily use, because the Impreza’s value depends heavily on its practicality and confidence rather than luxury polish.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Subaru Impreza?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 766 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.13% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,349.20, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Subaru Impreza's resale value?
The current average of $10,920 sits slightly below last year's $11,273.
That softer pricing suggests the market has eased, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, that also means resale value will depend heavily on how well the car is maintained and how clean its history is.
Because the model is still appealing to shoppers who want practicality and all-weather confidence, a well-kept example should remain easier to market than one with visible wear or a rough history.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Subaru Impreza or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.13% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $10,242, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $10,920 average.
- It adds a mid-cycle refresh with better cabin tech and a quieter feel.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $12,249, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $10,920 average.
- It brings standard all-wheel drive to a broader, more practical all-new package.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, confidence, and everyday usefulness, the 2016 is the primary year to target. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2015 is the smarter value play, especially if you find one with a cleaner history and better condition.
