How much does the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek cost?

Prices have softened 8.50% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,264 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 8/10.

Owners consistently praise its safety features, reliability, all-wheel drive, versatility, and easy handling. In practical terms, that lines up well with the Crosstrek’s compact-crossover mission: you’re shopping for a small, useful vehicle that’s easy to live with rather than one that prioritizes speed or excitement.

The market also shows 35.0% of listings as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to the Crosstrek as reliable, with owners describing it as dependable and trouble-free enough to inspire confidence over time. The expert evaluation also notes that the Crosstrek’s practical, easy-to-live-with character is part of its appeal, even though the powertrain is the main drawback.

The cost-effectiveness assessment adds that reliability reports have placed it average at best, so you should still pay close attention to maintenance history and overall condition when shopping used. For long-term ownership, the biggest risk is not the cabin or chassis — it’s whether the drivetrain has been treated well.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Subaru Crosstrek?

At 59.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s safety and driver-assistance equipment still functions properly. Because the Crosstrek’s appeal is tied so closely to practicality and safety, condition matters a lot.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 2.0i comes with 17-inch alloys, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a rear-view camera, fog lights, a 6.2-inch touchscreen with smartphone integration, and a USB port/Aux input. The 2.0i Premium adds heated body-color mirrors, heated front seats, an upgraded stereo, contrast stitching, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, an adjustable center armrest, and a cargo cover and tray. The 2.0i Limited adds a 7-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, auto climate control, auto headlights, leather, and an acoustic windshield. The Limited is the best-value trim if you want the most complete feature set without going overboard.
• Powertrain: The 2.0-liter boxer engine makes 148 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque. A 5-speed manual is standard on the 2.0i and 2.0i Premium, while the Limited uses a CVT. The CVT improves efficiency but can feel strained at highway speeds and adds noise.
• Safety package: The available Eyesight safety system adds rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-departure warning. Standard safety equipment includes 4-wheel antilock brakes, traction and stability control, a full suite of airbags, a rear-view camera, and active front head restraints. The system can be unavailable when the camera view is blocked by weather or dirt.
• Infotainment: The base trim uses a 6.2-inch touchscreen, while the Limited upgrades to a 7-inch system with satellite radio. Starlink adds automatic collision notification with SOS, stolen-vehicle recovery, and a monitoring app. The rear-view camera is standard, but the resolution is low.
• Fuel efficiency: The manual transmission is rated at 23 mpg city/31 highway, and the CVT adds 3 mpg on either end of the spectrum.

Which 2016 Subaru Crosstrek trim should I buy?

The 2016 Subaru Crosstrek is offered in 3 trim levels: 2.0i, 2.0i Premium, 2.0i Limited.

Here's the short version:

• 2.0i: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and still want useful standard equipment like the rear-view camera, smartphone integration, and 17-inch alloys.
• 2.0i Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds heated front seats, heated mirrors, an upgraded stereo, and a nicer cabin without jumping too far in price.
• 2.0i Limited: Choose this if you want the most comfort and tech, including the 7-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, auto climate control, auto headlights, leather, and the acoustic windshield.

The safety package is strongest when you add Eyesight, so prioritize a trim or example that includes it if safety tech matters most to you.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Subaru Crosstrek?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.

• Deal availability: 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,264 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.50% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 59.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $12,504, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek's resale value?

The current average of $12,504 sits slightly below last year's $13,665.

That price movement suggests the Crosstrek has become more affordable for buyers, which can make it a tougher sell for owners trying to maximize resale in the short term. On the other hand, the lower entry price may help keep demand steady among shoppers who want a practical, safety-focused compact crossover.

Subaru’s traditionally better-than-average value retention should help support future resale, especially if the vehicle has been well maintained and remains accident-free. For a future seller, condition and documentation will matter more than ever in a market where prices have already eased.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek safe?

The 2016 Subaru Crosstrek earns top marks from both IIHS and NHTSA, with the NHTSA noting a four-star rating in total frontal impact and perfect scores in the other tests mentioned.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Crosstrek comes with a strong safety package that includes 4-wheel antilock brakes, traction and stability control, a full suite of airbags, a rear-view camera, and active front head restraints. Available Eyesight adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning, though the system can be limited when the camera view is obstructed by weather or dirt.

One caveat is that the Crosstrek’s stopping distance is lengthy at 125 feet, which is worth keeping in mind if you’re comparing it with other small crossovers.

Should I buy a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 59.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.50% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 model adds Starlink, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure alert, and a freshened exterior and interior.

The bottom line: The 2016 Crosstrek makes sense if you want the updated safety and tech package, strong owner satisfaction, and a lower current price than last year. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can still shop carefully and target the best-condition examples, but the 2016 is the better pick when you want the year’s added equipment and a more modern feel.
