The Subaru Crosstrek has been around since 2013 and is now in its third generation. It’s based on the compact Impreza hatchback, but the Crosstrek’s raised suspension, chunky and protective bodywork, and various off-road modes and options mean it’s better suited to dirt, mud, and rocks than most other small crossovers.

What’s New for the 2027 Subaru Crosstrek
The current third-generation version of the Crosstrek rolled into showrooms for the 2024 model year. For its first two years on the market, it was offered with a pair of gasoline-fueled engines. From the 2026 model year onward, the base 2.0-liter engine was dropped, making the previously optional 2.5-liter engine standard. For the 2027 model year, the Crosstrek carries over with only minor updates. The previous gas-only Sport trim has been dropped, while Tidepool Teal Pearl is a new exterior paint option that replaces Alpine Green. For 2027, Subaru offers the Crosstrek in Base, Premium, Limited, and Wilderness trim levels. Check out our separate article for details of the 2027 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid.
Design
While some may dismiss the Crosstrek as little more than a jacked-up Subaru Impreza, the reality is more nuanced. With 8.7 inches of ground clearance (or as much as 9.3 inches in the Wilderness model), X-Mode off-road driving modes, cladding to help keep the car’s metal bodywork safe from damage by rocks and debris, and a more powerful standard engine, the Crosstrek is a true crossover with legitimate off-road capabilities. Crosstrek Wilderness models have a modified suspension setup that lifts them higher off the ground, along with underbody protection and chunky off-road tires on unique 17-inch wheels. Matte-black wheels and anodized copper-colored exterior elements set the Wilderness apart from other Crosstrek models.
Powertrain
All 2027 Subaru Crosstrek models come standard with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 180 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. A continuously variable automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels through Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system. Base, Premium, and Limited models are rated at 26 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway, and 29 mpg combined. The Wilderness model returns 24 mpg city, 29 highway, and 26 combined. Crosstrek models in Base, Premium, and Limited trim levels can tow up to 1,500 pounds. The Crosstrek Wilderness features an upgraded oil cooler that increases its towing capacity to 3,500 pounds.
Interior
The Crosstrek has ample room for four adult occupants. The dashboard’s chunky design elements mimic those of the exterior, giving it a purposeful look. There’s around 20 cubic feet of storage space with the rear seats upright, or around 55 cubic feet with those seats folded flat. Those are average figures for the compact crossover class and the 60/40 folding rear seatbacks offer some cargo-carrying flexibility. Gray cloth upholstery comes standard in the Crosstrek, while Premium models offer cloth in either gray or black. The Crosstrek Limited benefits from black or gray perforated leather-trimmed seats with orange contrast stitching. The Crosstrek Wilderness gets synthetic StarTex upholstery with unique copper-colored stitching.
Technology
Base Crosstrek models are equipped with a relatively small 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system and require wired USB connections for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. All other Crosstreks feature a far superior, vertically mounted 11.6-inch touchscreen and wireless smartphone connectivity. A six-speaker audio system is standard and a 10-speaker Harman Kardon package is available in Limited and Wilderness models.
